It's Dupont's kicking game that is really impressive. His passing is OK, his defense very agressive and he can resist tackles thanks to his torso and legs strength. Oh, and he is always where he is needed.
Ramos is currently the best fullback in the world. He oozes confidence.

Ramos’ positional kicking is crap. Wouldn’t have him near a world xv myself.

I was happy to be able to FF through stoppages in this game as the TJ/Hames show becomes too much.

@ACT-Crusader His kicking in first half was very average indeed. But, he did get better

@Stargazer I see he is listed as six foot three and seventeen stone eleven (or 1.90m 113kg in the new money) https://all.rugby/player/patrick-tuifua
Can stretch my memory back and vaguely recall the first round Altherm Tech v Hastings match and Hastings did have a shortish for a lock young guy charging around so that must have been him that day. I see Mr Tuifua also started as a lock in the second round clash but I was too busy looking for some flax bush to hid behind given the real thumping they were handing out to us for over half the game and then mostly looking skyward seeking devine assistance during the second half to notice him too much but he must have gone well given the domination they had, especially in the first half.

@Duluth first half we had zero line speed, zero energy, even our usually good defenders missed tackles, and then when we did get into a bit more of a pattern, defending our line first at a maul then making tackle after tackle would have sapped them hugely, which we did a few times IIRC.

Mauling and defending for long passages is hugely taxing, more so if you have a few of players with fitness not where it should be.

BOP players flopped over the ruck at the three rucks prior to the penalty. Could have been penalised four phases in a row.

I was joking, of course, but I could see him in the WTG.

Fantastic to see the Namibian full back come into the line and take it all the way

    Great try

He looks really good, Hastings esque

@Nepia why not double down and discuss how it's the blueprint Ardie set in stone pre-2020?

@SouthernMann said in Ta$man vs Otago:

If he's 5'9 then so am I. That has him the same as Mckenzie, taller than Kolbe, Weber and Smith. I think that would be a very rough estimate.

5"7 at best with Hurley. I've seen him in the flesh.

@Mr-Fish There were definitely some strange decisions by the ref. The penalty against Tucker was harsh because he tried to roll away but the Southland player (Mitchell?) with the ball on the ground clearly had wrapped his other arm around Tucker to make it impossible to do so.

Looking at it short term, I sort of agree with you, in that if we made the SF it would be above immediate expectations. However, in truth, with our resources, a SF place should be a minimum. We have so much going for us, numbers, funding, support, but we seem to have this handbrake applied about 80% of the time and an acceptance that this is ok and “the done thing” 90% of the time. It ceased to be amusing some years ago.

    @Bones

There were similar rumours a couple of seasons ago, locally. In the end he kept his contract, and Baxter DOES have a no dickheads policy, so I felt that it was probably just some shit stirring. However it does seem to be that shit that just won't flush.

    Who knows though?

Must’ve been the heat but that was a scrappy game with plenty of basic errors etc. Great to see so many former Super/AB’s in action.

Libbok will be kicking himself, but I fear he’d miss

Lack of execution in the first half really came back to bite. Maybe if we had gone in up at halftime like we should have been, the pressure might have told on Canterbury.

Agree about swapping midfielders. Goodhue has always been better at centre but think injuries and how much he has bulked up probably means he's more of a 12 now. Can potentially play as a second playmaker too. Probably good to have him defending closer in too.

Personally I think that injury to Craig may make it hard for him to make it back into the team. I thought we looked better with Hallam Eames extra size and physicality. Sweetman to come in plays similar to LHE so can see Craig dropping down the pecking order for me.

Reihana will come good but certainly didn't hit the level last night that he was playing at last year. Will also be good to get Moorby back and push Murray back to the wing.

Disappointing campaign for Japan. Lucky to get away with victory against Tonga, lost to a very underdone Samoa side and now completely done by Fiji, and they didn't even have to travel out of Japan for any games. I'd expect a lot better from them with all their resources available and how long they've been together for. They were lucky it was as close as it was against Fiji.
