Grandmaster Flash and the Sugarhill Gang were both just awesome, they really are the Bill Haley/Elvis equivalents as artists who basically created their genre..... -

Yep, the beat was created by the very talented axemen of "Chic". I can play the lead or the bass, damn shame I only have two arms.
As was "Another One Bites the Dust."

Chic is seriously underrated, but (surprisingly) several months back Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke (!?!) listed Chic's Greatest Hits as one of his 10 most important records. They remain the greatest disco band of all time. -

Some seriously hypnotic funk grooves laid down here. Their first song & hit.
At the time, no one would hear of 3 black brothers playing Rock'n'Roll! So Bernard and Nile came up with the whole Disco thing. I didn't even know what Disco was. We pressed 'Dance, Dance, Dance' ourselves as we didn't have a record deal. We took it to a club, the DJ played it and people just freaked. From there, we signed to Atlantic."
This is gloriously bad. From the Lethal Weapon soundtrack:
Those guys are from my part of the globe (probably the most famous band to ever come out of Niagara Falls - hence the "Honeymoon Suite"). They still play shows in Legion halls, Moose Lodges, and small taverns in strip malls around southern Ontario, playing the same circuit as Helix, Anvil, and the Killer Dwarfs. Oh, and yeah, they're pretty sure most people here know they suck. -
ah, the "Rap - Talent or Rubbish" debate is always fun.

As evidence for the Talent side, i present a funky little song from New York's "Digable Planets" their shit is smooooth hip hop over jazzy rythms, and its super relaxing
Morrissey has released his official statement on the Diamond Jubilee:
The soul is tried all over again as the jackboot of dictatorship strangles England. This week, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee presents a new lesson in the force of tyranny, and is an expression of loathing and abhorrence of the British poor - and all done, quite naturally, at the public's expense! It is degrading to anyone of intelligence. While dictatorships throughout the Middle East are gently condemned by the British government, there is no examination of the extremism enforced by the British 'royals', who remain the most overpaid and most utterly useless people on the planet. Having done nothing to earn our respect, they demand everything by return. It is a cunning and extravagant form of benefit fraud.
That Smith's clip reminded me of this by Elvis Costello. Gotta love the passion in the lyrics of absolute vitriol dedicated to Maggie Thatcher.
"Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the Lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
long enough to savour
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down"
