If fear for one's life due to one's criminal activities is a reason for asylum, then we are more fucked than I had thought.
It’s a bullshit reason too, he can live anywhere in the eu .
This guy had the same lawyer as that pedophile that did a runner to Brazil

@jegga death penalty if deported was why the UK had to keep old Hook hand the extremist wasnt it?
I know these lawyers that defend scum like this like to claim the moral high ground of everyone deserves justice and a good defence, but do they really believe that or is it all about the $$$?
I mean you know a guy is guilty as sin, deserves it all, but you get him off the charges due to a technicality somewhere, does that make you feel great as a Lawyer or a person, and then if he then goes and kills someone, do you feel bad for keeping him out there?
-
@taniwharugby I think that was the reason they had to keep them .
They interviewed the lawyer representing that guy I mentioned and the lawyer came across as an arsehole . He seemed more interested in proving what an amazing lawyer he was than anything else .

I take your point but the right to a fair trial for everyone is an absolute cornerstone of our society, and I wouldn't sacrifice that for anything. Better a guilty man walks free than an innocent man jailed.

I agree but sometimes you have to wonder what kind of person sues corrections because they lost a pedophiles wig. There’s giving your client the best defender possible and then there’s being a fluffybunny.

This shit makes me sick, both at the leniency as well as the fact that he has a new partner, how the fuck do you get a new partner when you've murdered a toddler?

Not one bit. Guys that defend scumbags like that have a moral flexibility that allows them to say it's just a job

That shewhale that defended Clayton Weatherston springs to mind, how the fuck she sleeps at night is a mystery . Probably with some difficulty, people her size often have sleep apnea.
Wasn’t defending Ewen MacDonald supposed to be one of the things that drove Greg King to suicide?

I hate to say it but a decent criminal defence is a necessary evil in order to maintain an attempt at a fair society. If people turned down these cases we would get more situations where innocent people are imprisoned. The down side is more evil people get away with evil but in a just western society that is preferable to someone being falsely imprisoned.
That said I'm sure some lawyers are scum but I'm also sure some are aware of this and it must take a hell of a toll on them and be an extremely difficult job.

The only course of action now is to send the scumbag home. More amateur hour stuff from Labour

@rembrandt not denying that...doesn't make it any more palatable though.
So basically Labour will be looking for any reason now to overturn this decision to the one 99% of kiwis will have wanted in the first place.

How many people are talking about Jami Lee Ross now?
