The protest leader is the Niece of one of the local Iwi leaders.
So has she got her own axe to grind or was her uncle against the deal?
Uncle Bully?

I fully support this and I urge you to as well.

@Baron-Silas-Greenback Like a lot of tribal politics it's not as straightforward as that. There seems to be some division within the hapu. Could easily be an inter-generational thing as well.
Tainui could also be involved if they chose to as they had a big presence in the area.
It is worth noting that non Maori interests were / are against the development of the land for historic cultural / archaeological reasons as well. Not meaning to be flippant but apparently its the oldest kumara garden in NZ.
I can see why St Cindy is steering well clear. It does show up her "I implore Maori to call us out when we let them down and I promise to take action" for the BS soundbite it was. However no government would want to set a precedent . I can see John Key wriggling just as much.
To give the protest lead some credit she's been occupying the land for two years so clearly is committed. Talks well, media savvy. Poor Fletchers.

She stopped development on the site. Apparently that wasn't enough for the protesters who lead a march to her electorate office.
