@mariner4life yeah that hits at the heat of the issue. Like it or not these idiot celebrities have a big platform and can spread some ridiculous nonsense - De Niro casting shade on vaccines as an example of the damage they can do.
-
A lot of them have also been at the forefront of whipping up a lot of really over the top hysteria about Trump which I don't think has been good for America.

This is not a crack at what you have said as I tend to agree. But are they only disconnected to 'our' reality? They live in their own reality which is as they see fit.
I say this only as it made me think that I am probably disconnected from the reality of a single parent with 2 or 3 kids working hard to support them.
We all have our own reality to live in, if you get what I mean?
I do get what you mean . I don’t think they should try and preach to us how we should live though .
Why not? I have never taken the advice of someone like that? It's us that gets to pick and choose what preaching we listen to.
I kind of see it as the people complaining about them preaching the ones with the issue as I don't understand how they can let it affect them unless they want to be affected by it. (Effect??)
i certainly understand this point of view. If it was just me, I don't care even one small tiny bit that they are hypocrites. Because i am not listening to what they are saying. I don't watch award shows. I don't watch interviews. I don't read interviews. Short of what entertainers do for me in their actual job, the number of fucks i give about them can be counted on the fingers of a careless piranha fisherman (the remaining fucks are whether they are hot or not). It's why i tend to miss the "controversy" moments that cloud people's judgement of films etc.
I also thing people actively listening to entertainers about serious issues need their heads read. However i know it happens...
And that's where these fluffybunnies can be dangerous. It only takes a couple of these narcissists to stand up and say the Great Barrier Reef is dead, and BANG! The western tourism market to my region dies. And we have to spend inordinate amounts of money to prove it's not.
I get that too and the consequence of that is frustrating as it's not who has said it but who has believed it.
I guess with 'living in a certain reality' thing cross pollinates into others.
What has made me think about this is that I guy in our local who is younger and has a kid was short of a quid for a beer. On his way out I had a quiet word and said if he is in trouble financially this particular week, I could give him $100. (His kid was less than a month old and I really felt for him)
Anyway the next day I saw him slip $20 into the pokies and I frowned on the inside as I realised I hadn't helped him at all. I just didn't understand the reality he lived in which was completely different to me. I won't see a cent of that $100 and it is as if it was never lent to him in the first place. I find that quite bizarre as if I had borrowed money, it would be at the front of my mind until I had paid it back.
To summarise, in my mind, we all have our own realities which are quite different but still absolute.

That's an interesting philosophical argument you have stumbled across.
When you saw him slip $20 in to the pokies, how much had you punted on horses?
What i am trying to get at is, we are all pretty convinced, at some level, that others should think the way we think. And we sort of get shocked when it turns out that isn't the case. Get a couple of like-minded people around you, and that becomes a rock-solid ethos.

That's exactly my point around realities we live in. We think "this way" is the right way but it is only likely the right way for us.
Hence why I don't have a problem of celebs saying their piece as it is the reality they live in.
I was astounded that he was putting coin in the pokies when A, he was skint and B, he owed me $100. The way I thought about that was completely different to what he thought about what was the right thing to do.

I don't for a second think what these celebrities preach about at award shows is anything close to their actual reality.
They go on about the #MeToo movement while at the same time turning a blind eye to sexual harassment, assault and rape to further their careers.
They go on about climate change while at the same time maintaining a carbon footprint equal to probably one million plus poor people.
They do it because they like to put themselves up on a pedestal above everyone else. It's pure narcissism driving it, so seeing them get called out on it in such a public manner, where they have nowhere to hide, is pretty satisfying.
-
@Hooroo ah but when he wins big - only a matter of time - he'll be able to pay you back....
Why anyone would listen to anyone who is good at e.g. playing make believe or kicking a ball give advice at anything other than playing make believe or kicking a ball (and only then in a guarded sort of a way as that sort of talent is often instinctive and can't be explained) totally bemuses me. But lots do it.
It's like you know a bit about racing but I'd go to Snowy for tailoring advice

i think i am with you
The vast majority of these people mean well, they are really trying to use the platform they have been given to improve the lives of everyone. The problem is, as you say, they live completely different realities to what we do. There are numerous examples of quotes about lifestyle that to them are no brainers, but to the average person are so far from attainable as to be fantasy.
But they are not alone in being guilty of that. As with your example, we all look at people who live differently to us (and often it's people with "less") and wonder why they don't just do something different.
The problem for me is, these causes they highlight have gone from the simple (watch your diet. workout a bit) or the significant (AIDS. Ethiopian famine) and "raising awareness" to "the President is a racist homophobic terrorist" or "climate change is real, change your whole lifestyle" and raising awareness has moved to pontification.
They also exist in a world where their job (yes, it's ridiculously paid, but it's still their job) is reliant on them remaining on the right side of certain markets. And those markets are even more in the above camp than the glitterati, only there are fuckloads of them, and somehow they can get people fired. Elen De Generes has probably done more for gay rights than anyone equivalent. But she had one photo sitting next to George Bush and the attack was vicious, and she was branded a traitor. Can you imagine existing in that sphere? Where you are fettered and constantly told you are right, but as soon as you misstep, the torches and pitchforks come out?
I'm willing to cut them a bit of slack because basically people are the worst.

My stepdad tried to help a mate who was a gambling addict , let him move in rent free so he could catch up on his bills and sponsored him at gamblers anonymous. It didn’t work and he went back to it , there was even a plaque with one of his betting stubs that had a caption “ always check your tickets “ above the betting booth at his local . He put a grand on a trifecta that actually came in but the numbers were wrong . He was understandably irate and stormed out , he was back into it the next day though .
He did a runner to Australia about four years ago owing thousands , he’s 77 now and still placing concrete for a living . All of his mates are long since retired .
His mind set is imho about the same as the guys I’ve known who got hooked on heroin or p . They just lie all the time-particularly to themselves and you can never trust them .
Personally I’d cut that guy loose , they tend find ways to drag you into their bullshit and you waste time and effort on someone who doesn’t want to help themselves.![alt text](image url) -

Their bubble gets smaller and more insular by the day. Celebrities desperately crave to be loved by the masses, for some of them it’s pathological and addictive. So it must be either a huge shock or complete cognitive dissonance to be spoken about publicly and have the rubes laughing at- and mocking them. And funnily enough, am now hearing that these viral Gervais’ clips have received more online viewers than people who actually watched the awards show.

Nice one @Hooroo
I'm generally in the "couldn't care less and don't understand why people get pent up over their comments" camp. Sure its boring and disconnected and patronizing, but really i just can't bring myself to care. Other than the hypocrisy around Harvey/Roman where there are serious issues at hand.
But if some famous actress wants to blab about climate change or Bono wants to preach about charity (despite moving his tax base put of Ireland), does it really impact me?
Not sure I buy into the "doing more harm than good" argument when you look back at the history of live aid, telethons etc. Surely on balance the impact of these narcissistic cnts is slightly positive?

How about celebrity endorcements and activisim against vaccines? How many kids has that killed?
Airheads talking about stuff they don't understand with a large audience that laps it up can be very harmful.
I'm being slightly sarcastic but that is natural attrition of those taking on that advice.
I do get it then has a bigger effect beyond those who choose not to get vaccinated, i.e all those Samoan kids that died as they were too young to be vaccinated.
