Wow RBNZ cut OCR by 0.75% to 0.25%. Have said will hold for 12months and will also delay the new capital rules for banks
What does that mean in practical terms?
The hold with 12months should give some certainty that we wont have a negative interest rate environment in the next 12months. Its a pretty bold move to cut it that much right now IMHO and then to send such a signal
They major NZ banks have all responded quickly saying they will pass on the full 0.75% cut to their variable lending rates but no move on fixed rates yet and that's what the majority of their lending is currently at.

Don't consider myself a conspiracy theorist but if those numbers are true the level of lockdown must be insane to bring it down like that.
Have heard some pretty over the top stuff that I don't know i believe in how bad it is over there and not being shared.
They have plenty of reason to lie. That kind of governmental system relies on control and if they look like they have lost it there are all sorts of problems.
Will wait and see but I am sceptical.

Anyone actually believe those China figures, just 11 new cases yesterday?
@chimoaus said in Coronavirus: should I be panicking yet?:
This site is worth checking for up to date stats.
Conspiracy theorists probably say no. But I'd say there is no good reason for them to lie now, and from what I read in the article about Taiwan they allowed Taiwanese observers in pretty early. And while they didn't necessarily fully disclose they allowed them more than enough access for the Taiwanese to come to the correct conclusions. Factories are starting to re-open which is a good sign, and based on anecdotal reports from people I know people are still restricting their movements over there,
There seems to be a suggestion that the disease can be stifled with isolation, but that is a fool's paradise, because once you ease off it will come back with a vengeance. I suppose the bet could be that in meantime a treatment is uncovered.
So very difficult to draw conclusions.

Give it a week and folk in London might be able to recreate some scenes

This was a cool (scary) watch. Hopefully adding to the info about how isolation and staying vigilant with basic hygiene can make a massive difference to the velocity of things.

Any other blokes considering shaving their arse to use less toilet paper? Regional Australia town has no toilet paper anywhere. Lined up outside supermarket this morning and they didn't even have a delivery. They said probably nothing until Thursday. I almost think the Govt may need to setup depots with essentials and ID used to stop panic buying. Lots of older people most be struggling to get basics.

Next issue will be blockages as folk try using other paper options.

What a week....
Last weekend flew to nz to go to a wedding. My girlfriend was meant to but her trip short miss the wedding and fly back to Aussie then LA to have a live interview for a WTA physio role (her dream job travelling to 12-15 events including majors each year if successful) at Indian Wells.
On Monday the tournament was cancelled. We also couldn't do the Tongariro crossing on Tuesday due to weather.
Wednesday the medical staff interviewing her said to still come to usa.
Thursday evening : actually scratch that the interviewer will be in nz next week and will fly her over or come visit her in Aussie.
Saturday: at the wedding told nz has self isolation. Gets email from interviewer.... Looks like that's not going to work as if she leaves nz will need situation in return or if my gf goes she will need isolation
Sunday: driving from hawkes to auckland...no updates on the news. Last stretch before the airport (like 5km away) announced 12pm self isolation. Thought for sure we would have a delayed flight. Got in at 8.30pm.
I do some work out of a medical centre (not a Dr). So will have face masks/gloves, hand sanitizer and patients who come in with any symptoms have to return to their car and the doctor screens them.
- glad I sober drove at the wedding so no confusion if I had symptoms.

When the Iceland volcano went boom a few years ago and they had to halt all those flights for a period of time, there was a dramatic increase in air quality which is no surprise. The surprise was the infux of Asthma treatments in Hospital. It was due to sudden change in air quality even though it was "cleaner" air.
I imagine with the sudden reduction in flights, we may see something similar again.

Re stockpiling mania.
Farmer up the road from me joked today that he wouldn't be surprised if someone knocked on his door asking to buy a cow to get thru the approaching coronavirus apocalypse.
Funner things have happened.

It's difficult for them to pass on interest rate cuts for fixed rate lending, over and above the fact that it's fixed rate The lenders will have borrowed long at a fixed rate and then leveraged that to their borrowers. It will take time for the lenders to arrange new long term fixed rate money to offer new borrowers at lower fixed rates. if this is possible at all in the current climate.

Actual state of emergency in Victoria..not one of those 'climate emergencies' which are becoming more laughable by the day.
