Coronavirus - Overall

Part of me wants to get infected so I can self isolate, get over it and move on knowing I'm not going to give it to anyone. Does anyone know if you can catch it a second time?
We thought the same. There seem to be some instances of recurrence, but it's not clear if the small number of afffected individuals had a complicating health issue which is relevant.

What the fuck is Boris doing?
Following his experts advice and their recommended strategy. He's said it time and time again, in their presence, on live TV
Herd immunity is all very fine. But containment is important
Containment is the strategy. They are trying to contain the thing so it doesn't overwhelm health services. The idea they are deliberately letting the virus infect people to build "herd immunity" - as some in the press have been been saying - has been pretty much debunked as fake news.

@Victor-Meldrew good. The report I read today says as much. And the people appear to be climbing aboard so that's great

How do you expect them to fully isolate?
They're not asking them to fully isolate. Going to the shops is fine.

@Baron-Silas-Greenback he may not have said it directly but everything has changed since 5pm today.
The advice of his experts changed. BoJo has consistently said he's led by his advisors.

It seems to me that they've identified the cards in their hand, but are finessing the timing of playing them.
So probably no new tactics, but just in light of latest data having to amend their views on the when. -

Regarding herd immunity, the $64,000 question is whether or not once 70% of the under 70s have had the disease they will cease to be potential carriers. I THINK the hope is that they will cease.

Every time I see another tweet or story about how lax authorities are being at our airports in regards to travellers coming in (especially from known hotspots), I get more concerned. Like seriously? A fucking pamphlet and off you go?
Here in Taiwan, if you are ordered to self-isolate, you get given a cheap cell phone with a GPS locator on it. You get called at random times.
If you don't answer it or the cellphone comes up not at your address - instant fine.
The leader of your community (apartment complex) checks on you once per day at random times.
NZ should look into this.

I've read comments from experts saying that related viruses haven't induced long-term immunity previously.

My take is that self-isolation is just a tool to limit the number of overseas arrivals without using the term "complete travel ban". You would hope that people do use common sense and display a degree of personal responsibility but in reality there will not always be the case. Anyone that publicly says they will ignore the rules should be on the first plane home. The extreme measure is to send all recent arrivals to Whangaparaoa no questions asked if they aren't NZ residents with a known address. But that isn't practical.
People have to be forced to self-isolate.
Fuck their feelings and their poor little sense of restriction being "cooped up". Second. harsh fines for non-compliance are needed.See my post on what is done here in Taiwan as an example.

That's what Whitty and Vallance, the chief advisors, said at the press conference today.

Whitty, the UK Chief Medical Officer, said today the big problem is there is no test for people who have had the virus. Until that's available info on immunity is really limited.

We are planning to have a discussion with our older parents in their 70's suggesting they don't leave the house and we will bring everything to them. They are very independent and pretty stubborn so likely will tell us not too. Tricky situation as ultimately it is their call and their life I guess.

I've been trying that with the future in-laws, he's just recovered from prostate cancer. No dice so far, folk including my Mrs haven't quite grasped just what the situation is right now.
Maybe sell them on the "Its not so much for you but for someone who might be in a worse position who may miss out on a hospital bed"

my 79 yr old neighbour is planning on going on his annual 5 month long trip to his house in Brisbane next month, every year he spends the first 4 weeks or so getting over some kind of bug...has respiratory issues already.
Have suggested he stays here given how mild the last couple of winters have been...

I guess you have to tell it like it is and pull no punches.
Sometimes in my work I need to play 'the death card' to try and impress on someone the seriousness of their situation. If all else fails tell them they better say their goodbyes because if they get it it'll be the last time you all see each other. It's just that serious for oldies. My folks are scaling down their outings as we head into Winter. Avoid big gatherings in public places, wash hands, masks if they feel its needed. All the basic shit, it's not rocket science
