Coronavirus - Overall

Interesting stuff. So, last week a 21 year old died here of Coronavirus - with no underlying conditions. She was then effectively used as the poster-child for everybody to take note of the govt requirements to isolate etc.
However, apparently her death had nothing to do with Covid. NHS staff who dealt with it have been dubious as to where this information came from.
Note the guardian article has been removed pending investigation. All a bit odd.

My fellow doctors should zip it and let the experts fight this virus
The bloke who's leading the UK response, Chris Whitty, is one of the top epidemiologists in the world and was responsible for containing Ebola in Africa. We are lucky to have him.
Doesn't stop rentaquote doctors with minimal qualifications telling us all that he's got it all wrong.

That's a list of great hints.
Mrs M & I have stopped reading some of the newspapers as their agendas just wind us up. A quick whiz thru the news in the AM and then the daily breifings - where we enjoy any inane questions being ignored or slapped down.

Sells newspapers / clicks. Sad to think that this is still the cash for a lot of media during this time when their job is so incredibly important.
Nothing wrong with questioning tactics / theories etc - quite the opposite. However it does get scary when those far less qualified act like they are of equivalence, and then click hungry outlets publish the same.

Is says something when The Daily Mail becomes one of the saner newspapers in this crisis..

Today (Monday morning EDT) 900 police officers from New York City and 700 officers in New Jersey have Covid.
Now, NYPD has just under 40,000 cops — how many are patrol and how many are stationed, can’t say. But one assumes the numbers of sick will go up. And when officers can’t police big cities...
Do guns & ammo stores qualify as “essential service”? ‘Cos if they aren’t shuttered, I can’t imagine sales are going to decline in the next month as people look to protect themselves.

@Salacious-Crumb I’m pretty sure I read somewhere the US had sold out of munitions due to panic buying.

What a total ****ing moron!
Fuck me but I hate these worthless apologies. It's like saying "i've been a complete fluffybunny, but as I've said sorry, everything is OK."
No it's not. You're still a fluffybunny.

Jeezuz does everything have to be politicised?
The media are shit except when they blame the Chinese for everything. Oh no they're still shit coz the Chinese are even worse and the media are covering it up.
Meanwhile on the other side Trump is an incompetent useless prick. FAKE NEWS! Well you would say that wouldn't you.
Trump has save / cost millions of lives. Ruined / saved the global economy. It's all fucking spin guys. Just depends on what your particular prejudices are which part of it you want to believe.
For what it's worth I heard a radio broadcast back in February by a Professor in Virology at Akl Uni that said what the Chines had done was amazing and that people don't appreciate how slowly these things usually develop. She was talking Chinese academics rather than the government but the first cases were what late November. On Dec 28th China released the entire genome sequencing of the virus to the global scientific community. That is not a cover-up. This apparently is what led to a test being developed so quickly (except in the States because they didn't trust the Chinese and so developed their own test and got it wrong). It's also a large part of why there are clinical trials already 4 mths after the first cases.
I'm not defending everything the Chinese have done. I find the regime abhorrent but a pandemic was always going to happen. We are actually overdue one. and the worst one in recent times originated in either Europe or North America.

Holy s. Til mid-June... and possibly extended? I smell a full-blown Depression loomin’. American uemployment is going to sky-rocket.

Yikes. You guys who’ve been tested weren’t joking.

So this is interesting
https://pandemic.internationalsos.com/2019-ncov/covid-19-data-visualisationApart from Hubei which is still pretty much locked down it looks like other regions of China are starting to see cases increasing again following relaxation of restrictions. Although I guess it could be what the Chinese govt line is travellers.
There's actually quite a few good graphs. In terms of cases every country shows the same sharply accelerating trendline except for China and South Korea who have the hoped for bell curve. And the US where the climb is steeper
Deaths is similar much the same curve except for Italy, Spain and (it looks like) the USA.
