NZ wines are grossly overrated and fucking expensive. It's bland, and the ones that are starting to taste good aren't nearly as good as a nice Cab Sav at half the price.
Shiraz is better still.
Also, it's the drink I get given by suppliers and clients every year, and so my dad (who hoovers the stuff up) does well out of it.

I think you guys are just a bit fucked by being in NZ (or Oz) where everything is outrageously expensive.
However, my confession is that, when I'm at home with the oldies, I quite like the Montana South Island Pinot (winemaker series). At all of $10 a bottle, you can treat it a bit like a Beaujolais, take a few degrees of it in the fridge for 30 minutes then have a glass in the evening sun....
By the way, if you can get your hands on Etna Rosso, do it.

I drink more Italian reds when the wider family gets together.
Thats good stuff. I'm central otago all the way for pinot, just has more body.
For cheaper buys, i agree Italian is the goods, a heap inoffensive chianti can be had for $20.
I love the Aussie reds, but find the Barossa stuff too heavy these days. Anything over 14% and I'm tasting syrup. Give me a McLaren Vale blend any day

Pinot really needs bottle age for the flavours to develop. But it is pricey. You can extend your argument though and say a really decent Tempranillo or Malbec is as good as a nice Cab Sauv at half the price

@mariner4life I wont pay more than 20 for a 6 pack of beers, even at $18 I think fuck it that's over priced...def not over $15 for a 6 of something g I never tried.

I actually agree with you if you are in NZ.
Here in Japan, the better NZ Savs are in the Sancerre price range, and up with Piedmont Arneis and other very fun (and easier to pair) wines.
The lower NZ Savs are often priced alongside Bordeaux Sav/Semillon blends, and you can find really amazing examples of them which just leave the NZ ones behind at that price point.
For example, I drink a bit of this as we pay the same for it as a Sileni Sav Blanc. It's from Chateau Beychevelle and they made an OK red too.
This link suggests that it costs about double in OZ compared to what we pay.

As to the beer, Craft beers are stupidly over priced, not about being tight, I prefer to buy a variety of them to try different ones, cos some are not worth the money you have ot pay.

I’m a prood Scot but in saying that I hate oatcakes and haggis and I prefer Rum and Vodka over Whisky

Haggis done well is absoultely sensational.

WTF? You've got some weird Māori where you're from.
Speaking of Māori food - kina is disgusting. I'm pretty sure half the people who eat it do so for cultural reasons rather than taste reasons.
