@Frank said in Coronavirus - New Zealand:
Does a vaccine mean you won't get the virus or are just less likely to?
How effective is the flu vaccine in preventing the flu vs those who are not vaccinated?
Depends on the vaccine apparently. Like whether is prevents you catching the virus or helps you fight it.
Refer Coronacast podcast from yesterday. About 10mins long.
I know some think Norman Swan is a little left of centre but still some good info.

I am sure patient zero was not a family member but in fact someone working in quarantine services. Either the government know and are working out how to spin the embarassment, or our contact tracing is so fucked they haven't worked it out. Or this family are not being as helpful as they could be in identifying the leak (cultural more than wilful obstruction)

That’s a great deal of guesswork going on there.

NZ is in a dangerous situation right now.
- A very popular PM (with the best pained empathy expression in the world) who may not be as competent as her cheerleaders believe or even neutrals believe.
- A media that largely cheer-leads for her and avoids holding her to account.
- A population that was busy patting itself on the back and lapping up international media praise (the fact that came from largely liberal pro-lockdown angles seems to have been lost on them)
- And a virus that gives no fucks.
I am worried that, even at this stage, the necessary steps are not being taken or effectively enforced and we will hear more in the coming weeks.
This 100% Frank. The lack of honest critique will hinder us going forward

Yup of course. But this is the Fern, you didn't expect me to have the facts did you!!!?!

It has to be right? Even IF we had amazingly strict border and quarantine measures in place that would logically be the most likely place to start looking. Dig through all the details and records of ALL staff and try to trace their where abouts and possible links to this family.

They would love to believe it came from that cold store. I can't see it, the virus would die in transit surely

@taniwharugby said in Coronavirus - New Zealand:
@canefan they said yesterday a good lot of the close contacts had been tested didn't they?
Not sure. But Bloomers said they have reached about 500 out of 700 persons of interest, 200 out there festering potentially. So maybe we can assume they tested the 500 and what we got told is how many are out there to date

The coldstore thing is simply eliminating a(remote) possibility. You’d be screaming if they didn’t check.
Man there’s a lot of headless chook surmising going on at the moment. I understand that we are in a knowledge vacuum around this but FFS, lining up the firing squad before knowing the crime?

@Kirwan Treatment(s) that render it less dangerous. Lot's of them being developed now. This has always been what I've been holding out for. Vaccine has always seemed a bit of a pipe dream. Nice to have but don't hold your breath or rely on it.
spot on.
Good treatment, fast reliable detection and you are most of the way back to normality. HIV doesn't ahve a vaccine, but they've found ways to slow it down and basically stop it.
From healthline.com
In 1996, the total life expectancy for a 20-year-old person with HIV was 39 years. In 2011, the total life expectancy bumped up to about 70 years. -

I don't know about you, but after the Melbourne cautionary tale, and all the stories of near misses in our own systems, I expect to be off work and out of pocket for another few weeks. It leaves me thinking

@Frank I'm definitely not voting Labour. It would be unpatriotic of me to do so since we don't win RWCs when they are in power.
uh, 1987?
Edit: and I liked John Key, but can't resist this:
My bad. Should have said in the pro era.

I guess the only 'positive' so far, is all the new cases are still linked to the original cluster, it is just the unknown of how this got in originally...

Yeah but it’s oversimplification to say ‘one job.
I’m not excusing incompetence if that is the cause but we don’t know the cause or if it was a risk not covered eg frozen imports
We are still learning how this thing works so can hardly plug gaps that we can’t see
