D day today, all the rumblings seem to point to an extension of L3 here in Auckland. Anywhere from a week to 2 weeks. I really hope not.
The problem is that level control only works as long as people want it to. If people at large just go 'stuff it' and start socialising, drinking in public, opening stores and mingling - what the hell can anyone in Authority do? Literally nothing - it's not feasible to start arresting people en masse for breaking L3 rules.
I think Cabinet wanted to see how the weekend went, and sure enough a bunch of people broke rules - got into playgrounds and skate parks in particular. I think we'll drop back from L3, but maybe not too far.
My feeling is they wanted a L4. All the language that came out at the start of this new ‘lockdown’ seemed harder and heavier then last time. It lead to a lot of confusion over which businesses can open and which can’t. It really felt like it was L4. Got the impression they wanted people to react like it was L4 but without making it official. They knew it wouldn’t have been taken well at all.
Interesting. My view is that the govt is gradually doing a climb down from their previous elimination strategy.
Plenty of comments about we don't need no new cases in the community to go to L2 etc which we did not hear last time. They're also not talking about the need for two full cycles which was "essential" first time round.
As for how the lockdown is progressing. Akl seems gripped by a strange collective bipolarism. Many more people wearing masks - a majority at supermarkets etc but social distancing seems to be voluntary. Far more businesses open. Loads that didn't open under L3 last time have this time round including things like car yards... They also seem to have been more liberal with their interpretation of the rules. I have seen lots of little food and liquor retailers who are not doing contactless sales - letting people inside their premises to choose items and the like.
Meanwhile according to media vox pops most people seem to expect an extension of L3 and even think it is necessary.
I could reluctantly accept an extension if they were going to use the extra time to strengthen the border in the manner that they should have last time. However I don't see any evidence that this is happening. Maybe it's simply beyond us. Certainly the Luftwaffe Oberst they've put in charge doesn't inspire me with any confidence.
I would like them to stop pussy footing around and come out with some clear directives - which might be unpopular but would allow us to get back to some degree of long term normality.
Manadatory weekly testing of everyone that works at the border
No moonlighting nurses
Mandatory use of the tracing app
Issue the contact card and make it mandatory
Comprehensive definitions of what is allowed and not allowed at every Level
Random testing of all the above. Anyone who fails goes straight into managed isolation
Explain that this is an erosion of our civil liberties but that it is a temporary solution aimed at ensuring we don't have to keep going into lockdown
Introduce legislation to support all the abovePut the Privacy Commissioner into an oversight role on the tracking and charge him to come up with a plan to dismantle it all once we are out of the pandemic

Jacinda (and Ashley for that matter) are going to have to move very cautiously in terms of PR from now on. I think pretty much all goodwill has been used up, and people are a lot less likely to accept platitudes or cutesy shit like team of 5 million/ be kind. Everyone is well over being told to do this that the other thing and then finding out about yet another fuck up at the border or in quarantine.
This stuff is basic common sense. Regular testing, no moonlighting nurses, defence force rather than useless private security firms etc.
-
@Mokey Yeah several hundred
peoplemoronsconspiracy theorists and a smattering of libertarians walking down Queen St ignoring all social distancing guidelines with zero consequences from attending Police ably demonstrated just how much the govt has to rely on our goodwill. -

I was talking to a mate of mine who works as specialist in a hospital here in AKLD. He's pretty cautious about the threat of covid19. He was saying that our nursing resources are so thin that there is no choice but for DHB nurses to help in quarantine facilities. And that in hospital they are best equipped to detect and deal with a leak. I must say I was surprised by his stance, so there must be elements of truth to what he said. A complicated issue but one that demands some serious consideration

If enough people break the rules there's nothing the government can do, so they do need to tread carefully.

Big announcement this afternoon. Considering the number of aucklanders out and about flouting social distancing rules on the weekend (probably overblown as usual by the media), extending the L3 for another week will be a very hard sell, especially in light of the dwindling cases

The impression I get in Aucks is the government has used up their good will and people are just going about their lives regardless of the "lockdown rating".
Once the public remove their silent acquiescence the government become powerless. Police can only enforce laws by community acceptance.

@dogmeat Yep, I think this is yet another indicator of the eventual new strategy:
Aug 24, 2020 1:35 PM
RNZ LiveWhen we get another case, we should be able to manage it within an alert level 2 or 1 setting," Bloomfield said.
So why on earth can't we go into L2 now?
-
This is such BS. Cindy says the extra days will give people time to prepare. Prepare for what??!!?? We have been to this show before, businesses know exactly how they are to operate in L2. New cases are low, there is no good reason why we should not be able to head back to work on Thursday morning as originally proposed

This is from the official statement:
Ultimately, our goal needs to be managing this cluster from Level Two as soon as we feel confident we can do that. That means feeling confident we have the perimeter of the cluster well understood and defined, and are not seeing too many cases cropping up that we haven’t found through contact tracing. Based on the advice of the Director General, we believe that confidence can be built over the course of this week.
That is why, the Director General has recommended to Cabinet, and Cabinet has agreed to apply a short extension of Level Three restrictions in Auckland until 11.59pm this Sunday 30 August.
You may recall we were due to lift restrictions on Wednesday. These extra 4 days are believed necessary to allow us to move down a level in Auckland, and stay down. We want both confidence, and certainty for everyone.

What does that even mean? Confidence and certainty? If they hadn't fucked up in the first place we'd all be more confident. My confidence is progressively eroding that this lot could organise a piss up in a brewery and not forget to bring the glasses

Such a waffly pile of shit statement.
I'd also like them to elaborate on why next time will be different, or if it won't be, then to be honest and tell us to get used to going up and down levels every time we get a case in the community.

@Godder said in Coronavirus - New Zealand:
Level 3 extended to Sunday 11:59pm, masks mandatory on public transport at level 2 and above. Hospo etc can open from Monday, but gatherings still limited to 10 except for funerals which are 50.
So level 2.5 then really? No team sports still....

She can give us no real world reason why 4 more days is so important. To be sure the latest cluster is contained? I call bullshit on that
