@Virgil said in Coronavirus - New Zealand:
Rest of NZ probably wishes the Harbour Bridge collapsed completely into the sea trapping a big chunk of the population up here
As long as Aucklanders can still drive their SUVs to pick up their soy lattes they’ll be happy in isolation

@Crucial I was being somewhat facetious, but there are some who are incredibly intelligent at what they do but sometimes lack the practicality when it comes to real world stuff.
I think extending that argument to one freak event in millions of vehicle crossings over 60 years is a bit of a push. Can't account for every possibility.
-
@Crucial fair enough, but given the nature of that structure, would still have thought a truck being blown over by wind would not do as much damage as it did.
At least the truck driver will be unlikely to be deemed liable for causing the damage...
-
Not sure if we want privatised quarantine providers. Melbourne had those....
-
@canefan given we had someone supposedly test negative twice in 14 days, and positive once out, what does that do to the 14 day quarantine period?
Assuming it wasnt caught late in thier quarantine stay due to being able to mingle with other quarantiners, the majority of people test positive in that 14 day period, meaning shortening that period comes across solely as a cost cutting measure?

AKL harbour bridge isn't suspension obviously, but weakening a structure designed as it was does require fixing, unfortunate event.
Some time ago I know, but this was caused by a bit of a wind and harmonic resonance. Just amazing:
Bit upset about the dog.
-
@Snowy vortex shedding is really interesting.
For other wind related fun, check out the cooling tower collapse in the UK at Ferrybridge - also vortices and resonance

Yeah it is.
Fluid dynamics does some strange things, aeroplanes with vortex generators are an interesting one - you take the drag hit in some ways, but get the turbulent boundary flow to prevent stall.AKL bridge is more structural and weakened steel is not cool.
2020 keeps on giving. I was going down there tomorrow. Won't bother, the traffic was horrendous pre covid so just going to be utter shit now.

There were a couple of accidents today that generated real gridlock, when combined with the Harbour Bridge. Working from home for the win...

so 3 new cases today, all linked to the guy who had been tested and left iso.
Also
Another six historic cases, which date back to February, were also announced on Wednesday. Those cases were part of an historic cluster in the Waikato.
The ministry said they posed no risk to the public.
The historic cases came to light after a man recently developed a sore throat and was swabbed for Covid-19.
The test returned a “weak positive result” that in addition to tests of his antibodies, led doctors to believe he had an old Covid-19 infection.
He likely contracted the virus from a family member who fell ill while visiting New Zealand from Italy.
The relative had symptoms of Covid-19 when they arrived in New Zealand on February 21– a week before what had been considered the country's first case of coronavirus was confirmed.
Other people living in the same house as the man also became unwell.
However, the household were not tested for coronavirus at the time because they had not travelled from or transited through China.

@taniwharugby amazing how much these fuckers get around. I move in about a radius of 30 minutes drive at all times during my week

Yep, I'm pretty much keeping myself home as I have a few health issues. Annoying watching other people just fuck it all up.
-
oh man
So this guy has retruned negative result to day 3 test and day 10 or whenever the 2nd test is, yet couldnt wait the final 2 days to get out having arrived on 16/09, so tied sheets together to escape...he is a deportee from Aussie, so surely these people need to have a bit more attention put on them?

That's looking like a good decision.

Surely we must have N isolated island somewhere we can quarantine deportees?
-
so this dude has escaped form a 4th floor window, visible from a busy street in Auckland, and no one saw a sheet dangling from a window and a guy climbing down? Probably more likely to get thier phones and and film it to show friends later in the day...
-
@taniwharugby in a rush to be first posting it up on FB or IG more likely!
