UK approves the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine.
Immunisations could start within days for people in high priority groups.
The UK has already ordered 40m doses - enough to vaccinate 20m people, with two shots each.
Around 10m doses should be available soon, with the first doses arriving in the UK in the coming days.
NZ likely to get it end of March, IIRC.
Mrs Meldrew's daughter - paediatric nurse - is getting her first shot next week.
Meanwhile the EU hopes to meet to discuss approval on 29 December.....
I have to admit, I find this slightly worrying. Is the UK rushing too fast and pushing something through that hasn't been tested properly?
Or are the EU being typical bunch of uber-conservative ensuring that the vaccine meets their "higher standards" ... whatever that means.
@Tim - really interested in your thoughts on this one.

Tom Kerridge?
Pubs and hospitality seem to be OK here in Cornwall. Wonder if that's because they've always had to attract customers to survive. Local holiday village and B&B have had pretty normal Christmas bookings.
Local pub in next village (oldest in Cornwall) has been sold and is re-opening after having been closed for 5-6 years.
Pubs have been struggling for years in the UK. The modern youth, are simply less interested in having pints at the pub. Much more likely to have a vodka, water and fresh lemon at home with some vegan snacks than smash a pint of a carling with a bag of walkers.

Thought that too but a quick google shows US FDA approval expected next week/10 days.

Look like a bit of internal politics at play. Seems individual EU states need to agree EMA approval before it's formally approved. Approval process start delayed for some reason and some EU states pressing the EU to follow the UK & US approach.

You obviously don't know Ms M1. Voracious appetite for G&T's is only matched by her love of jellybeans.

What about Victor's daughter?
Haven't heard yet. Ms M1 is training in psychiatry so she'll be down the list. Ms M2 starts interacting with patients in Jan so I'd imagine a jab then.
Mrs M's daughter is in respite care with severely disabled kids - inc. respiratory problems, hence top of the list.
My doc daughter is F2 in psychiatry at the mo. Hasn't mentioned vaccine... yet.

Young medicos are not known for their abstinence!

Classic from JVT at today's press conference after a reporter asked if it was a failure that the vaccine wasn't being rolled out immediately to Care Homes but to hospitals and GPs first
"As we've explained, there are logistical difficulties as It has to be stored at -70c. It's not like a yoghurt you can take in and out of a fridge"

If only someone could invent something like dry ice that went to the required temperature

I can understand that.

Apparently it's manufactured & distributed in batches of 975 doses which doesn't help with logistics.
Imagine they will figure out how to break them down into smaller batches going forward.

Mine is a second year doing psych on a rota. Seems keener to end up studying neurology. Probably seen enough psychosis in family to put her off the former!

Got to ask: why 975?

For those of us who've had to put up with the sanctimonious, holier-than-thou, sneering, overpaid incompetents who masquerade as "journalists" during the Coronavirus crisis, this is schadenfreude on an epic scale....

Have ‘agreed’
That’s nice of them
Paid or unpaid

Just taken off the air I think - still employed.
Beth Rigby to Dominic Cummings: "Decent people all over the country have made huge sacrifices yet you, you decided to travel to Durham allegedly to look after you family. Most people would be disgusted. Why haven't you been sacked?"
You'd have to have a heart of stone not to laugh yourself silly at the irony ....
