Cowboys!

I took my kids to a service (not the dawn one) about 4 years ago and my daughter was only 3, and she talked a little, but only in asking questions about things, I moved to the back, one old fella gave us the evils, but another came back and was really helpful in telling her in much better detail than I could.

Only taken TR Jnr to Dawn services, although Miss TR is now at the point where she is old enough to come along too and know when to keep quiet...only issue will be waking her before dawn!
-

If, say, it was a small town, and the RSL sub-branch was closed, and the pub was the only watering hole, then yeah, open. Even if you're owned by Indians :)

And its 'Strayan, not your bloody complicated word
-
My dad died 51 weeks ago today.

His wife invited my bro and I to take something to remember him by.

I was shocked to find his Aussie dog tags in his bedside drawer.

Says a lot I reckon that through over 30 house moves he had them next to him at 84.

I was über proud to wear them today.

Being so close to the first anniversary of his death made it even more poignant but I was humbled to be able to wear them and recognise those that gave us the freedoms we enjoy today. -
He signed up at 15 and 5 foot 2 but WW2 ended before he finished training.

He was in J force. Made it to Japan in time to participate in official surrender ceremony.

Then was sent to Hiroshima to help with relief.

Was also a part of relief part for 48 Tokyo quake.

So never in combat but saw a lot.

Left army 3 months before Korean War started -
This might interest you , I haven't read it but J force got a bit of attention when the book came out http://www.penguin.co.nz/products/9780143567240/occupiers-new-zealand-veterans-remember-post-war-japan/74437/extract

Thanks jegga

My old man never talked about his service apart from an island he went to with a really tall statue of a dick -the difficulties in getting to know the local popn and because he saw their suffering first hand the contrast with how he had felt about them and how many of the vets he served with still did.

He didn't like the yanks. Very racist he thought.

And like the article he felt bad he hadn't seen combat.

I also think being 15 and serving with hardened veterans Hasan life long effect on him -

As was mine. The dawn parade I went to last year was littered with camera flashes as trendily dressed people took dozens of photos on their camera phones, presumably to show their mates they were there.

My Facebook newsfeed contained more than a few people who wouldn't have the time of day to yarn to an old veteran on the bus and wouldn't be seen dead in an RSA 364 days of the year, but by 7am on the 25th of April they've already posted half a dozen photos to Facebook with some cliche rant about freedom that quite probably don't believe.

In hindsight, I really need to do a Facebook friend cull...
-

If I can actually get my sons to come along to one when they're older I'll get a photo for FB but I agree with all of the above. Better half and I went and certainly don't feel the need to tell the world and certainly didn't take a photo between us. Nothing I enjoyed more than yarning with my Grandad about his old war stories over a milo when I was little and a beer as I got older.
-
Telling people about it on Facebook is waaaay less real than bragging how much you care on the Fern
