Movie review thread...

Saw Avatar in 3-D last night, excellent movie but you would really have to see it in 3D to appreciate it e.g. some of the movie would be lost in translation with-out the 3D effects.

Thought it was excellent, seamless integration of real and CGI, entertaining storyline and visually stunning - a little blunt in it's delivery though...

Ironical in that this movie somewhat appeared to represent what happened between the American's and the American Indian's, can't help but feel it's a little sanctimonious... -

I enjoyed it, but wasn't sure about the 3D. It felt a little gimmicky, and with all the brilliant CGI on display I'm not sure it needed it.

I will say it's the best CGI I've ever seen, I didn't see a single bad effect and the aliens looked utterly real. A real landmark in the technology, it was like a couple hundred gollums being on screen, but even better than that CGI.

The story was fine, very predictable but that's not a problem for this type of film. And I'm not convinced about Sam Worthington, he's fine in a Colin Farrel sort of way, but like him I have no idea how he's getting these movies. He was very earnest, and with some of the dialogue he bloody needed to be.

I'd give it a 7/10 and will see it again on a normal screen. -
Its a snowball thing, he hit the headlines in Somersault & then he gets cast in 1 huge film & then everyone goes "I saw this guy in Somersault, he was pretty good & he's cast in Terminator 4 so by the end of 2009 he'll be HUGE, so we cast him in Avatar".

Then the when they are casting Clash of the Titans they go ""I saw this guy in Somersault, he was pretty good & he's cast in Terminator 4 AND in Avatar, so by the start of 2010 he'll be HUGE so we'll cast him in Clash!".

And so on, becomes self-fulfilling. That and they are betting on him becoming MASSIVE & yet they can get him for a tenth of the price of Christian Bale.

Same happened a few years back with Shia Lebouf.

And for that matter with Colin Farrell

We recently bought a film for no reason other than it having Gemma Arterton in it on the back of it delivering in Q4 2010 after shes been in Clash & Prince of Persia. Shes shit for the role, but its a bet on her being massive. Cracking set of tits tho'. -
And on a review / upcoming point I saw the 99% finished version of this a little while back -
(its Kick Ass)

The trailer pretty much sums up the movie. Its just superb, action, great one liners & just an insane amount of very inappropriate violence. Based on a slightly obscure set of comics. Next year is shaping up to be superb from a mindless exploding helicopters people being shot in the face kind of way - Clash of the Titans, Robin Hood (ie Gladiator 2), Kick Ass, Iron Man 2... -
Ya, the Robin Hood trailer looked pretty good - people getting a massive sword in the head and shit <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
It really is Gladiator 2. (YAY!)

I defy anyone to watch big Russ smoke those 6 guys & end with the double handed beheading in Gladiator & not pee themselves just a little bit at the awesomeness of it. Its like the bit in Star Wars when you realise Han Solo has come back & shot those last couple of Tie Fighters.

Yes Russ, yes I am entertained. -
Saw Invictus last night - thought it was very good.

The rugby scenes in it, were very realistic, most impressive. For the non rugby player they infused parts of the story to give ideas as to how to play rugby, which I also thought was good for the American audience. As much to a number of you on here's surprise - they didn't paint the All Blacks off to be villians. In fact the opposite - we were portrayed very well, especially our favourite man - JONAH!
The haka wasn't too bad, could have been better, but could have been worse, so no complaints.

Also some of the characters were a close resemblance, so they were trying to stuck to the true story. For instance the little scruffy haired guy they had for Merths.

Story line was good as well - but most of us should know it anyway.
Freeman and Damon both played their parts very well, no surprise there as they're both brilliant actors. A reasonable bit of humor throughout as well, which was good.

Overall I thought it was a very good movie. To watch as a spectacle, to portray the game we love, and to also show the team we love. -
2012 - a tale of man vs nature, looking into your soul and seeing the depths of human spirit, how mans survival instinct and selfishness can be overcome by the heart and togetherness.

3/10 -
Jennifers Body is pretty awesome (given Megan Fox is Jennifer)

The movie however, is not so awesome...wannabe cult horror type flick, 6/10 -
Went to see
2012'. The story is corny, it has a predictable ending but the special effects were amazing. Out of 10 .... 8

Also went to see
The Time Travellers Wife'. Clever idea but the director didn't manage to pull it off. Still trying to work out why the time traveller travelled back in time. He disappeared, arrived at his new location naked, stole some clothes and immediately jumped back to a his life with his wife and family (albeit sometimes in a different year). Out of 10....5.

Has anyone seen `Avatar'? What's it like? Someone said you have to view it through 3D glasses (?) -

Stunning, caught it on an Imax screen in 3D...visually brilliant. Cant imagine seeing it any other way would do it justice. -
Missed District 9 at the movies but saw it on DVD the other day. Now I don't know how to actually do a spoiler on this new format so a mod can feel free to do it for me but for those who haven't seen it....

SPOILER BELOW !!!!!!********

How come these Aliens who could literally rip people to pieces were herded up and treated like slaves ? not only that they had weapons and surely they could easily break out and take over Jburg ? There were 1.8 million of them, did they not communicate and think "fuck this lets get out of here, those with weapons go in front"

After all those were some of the coolest guns in movie histpry, it would only take 20 or 30 of them leading from the front to annailate an entire armed force surely....

Maybe this was discussed cos I was a bit tired and pissed while watching it so I may have missed it. -
I also saw Avatar in 3D on the Imax screen. Pretty damn cool. I was skeptical about the 3D, but it was actually quite neat, and integrated into the movie. Not as distracting as I thought it would be. First movie I have seen in the theater in about a year, and was worth it. I thought the less obvious 3D stuff (like the floating ash after Jake Sully wakes up alone after the Home Tree was destroyed) was better than the 'obvious" stuff (like the golf balls near the beginning of the flick)

Yup exactly how i thought, you expect movies in 3D to play on it far too much (things flying towards your face etc)
But avatar didnt do that, it just enhanced the experience, made you feel like your actually there.
