Star Wars doesn't have to resort to titty shots of it's characters to try and be better

I watched the new episode of āDiscoā (as Iāve learned the cool kids call it).
The have lightened the tone a lot, with some good humour (some forced). The guy that plays Pike is ace, and exactly how a Star Trek captain should be.
Reference to the new uniforms, and we could see them on the Discovery next season. They look so much better.
Story was very TNG, which I liked. Didnāt like all the talk about Spock and the flashbacks.
Next week looks even more like a Star Trek self contained episode. So it looks like they have listened and smoothed off some of the sharp edges.
The production design is movie quality. Must cost a bomb. Someone on reddit pointed out they are doing some homages to TOS with the lighting, nice face in shadow with the stripe across the face lit up.
Spockās room on the Enterprise was cool too.

Apparently they blew the budget on the first two episodes.
Action was incoherent. Episode was very slow with all the boring flashbacks. Burnham has to tell everyone off, and is still a terrible character. Vulcans are jedi now. Plot was very Marvel.
The Pike actor was good.

The flashbacks were terrible. Not sure I get the Jedi reference from this episode?
And like I said earlier, Iām going to end up wanting to see a Pike/Enterprise show. He even had Kirk like dialogue at times.
It was a step up, so Iām optimistic it can continue to improve. They have lightened up Micheal.

I spoke too soon, STD is all over the damn place. Second episode was an aberration, with some seriously uneven writing going on in the rest. They pack too much in an episode, everybody defies the captain (who is great when given something to do) with no consequences.
Itās such a shame, this is going to get canceled because they seem to dislike the fan base.
Anyway, the last episode of the Orville was some of the best sci fi Iāve seen in years. And to make my point, my 11 year canāt get through one episode of Disco but he woke me up to tell me about how good the the last episode of Orville was and couldnāt wait to talk about it after Iād seen it.
-
The guy who wrote that episode is a producer on that Orville. Other TNG/DS9/VOY producers, writers, directors, and actors have been involved with it too.
The Orville isn't very ambitious, but they do know how to tell a story and create characters.

I think itās less about lack of ambition and instead a clear vision for what they want to do.
The huge irony is that The Orville is taking on some pretty weighty topics that STD is clearly thinking they are doing.
Simple fact is you can show strong female characters without pushing down men. And you can write stories that cover sexism, racism, prejudice, religion and still be entertaining.

@Kirwan is that S2 of The Orville you are talking?
About that awesome episode? Yes.

@Kirwan cool, I havent started S2 yet.
It's quite brilliant.

new co-showrunner
Yeah, this is the 4th show-runner team now? Hopefully they go in a new direction. Especially with how Kurtzman has talked about how he wants to be more high-level management for several Trek shows.
Heard something interesting today. Apparently in Fuller's original treatment, the mushroom stuff was going to be about the use of advanced fungal colonies to terraform planets. Nothing to do with ghosts, the afterlife etc ...

@taniwharugby Apart from a couple of flat episodes, The Orville has been pretty good this year. They are better at telling one major story per episode, and creating relatable characters.
