v Wellington

  • All quiet on this front....

I'm not overly confident, some interesting changes to the team, most notably, yet another change to our mid-field and Matich to the bench. I want to give these coaches a shot, but I am struggling to see much value they are providing, when we look our best is when the boys are playing loose 'Northland' rugby.

Also Werahiko still on the bench, I assume he didn't play club footy up here?

Saw the Welly boys on their flight to Whangarei yesterday, not as big as I thought they'd be, I only recognized 3 of them.

Sorry to jump in on the Northland thread.

Werahiko played the whole club season down here, and last year too.... he's not a bad signing. I thought he'd make the Canterbury squad, and even thought he wouldn't be far away from the crusaders 3rd hooker role.

  • @SammyC cheers, I am sure he is a good pick up, just seems odd that the NRU have had this policy for the past few years of only picking players (super players aside) that are currently playing club footy here to now nab him mid-season...granted our 'best' 2 hookers are injured and the need for a quality replacement.

There are some fickle fairweather fans up here; moan cos we lose, moan cos we sign players from out of region wanting locals used, but it is unfortunately obvious some of our 'local' players are not quite up to it, not to mention the fact that there isn't really a definition of 'local'

I wonder if there's been a Blues approach?

Blues have lost MacDonald and I'd be amazed if Moulds is not cut given how little game time he got under Umaga. That leaves them with one hooker on contract (Parsons) and no Hookers were in the recent signings.

I would hope Tana is chasing GPT hard, but even that would leave all the hookers Northland has used and maybe Sua going for one spot. There's not many options because NZ does not have 15 Hookers capable of playing Super Rugby.

  • @Duluth possibly, although Olsen looks a very good prospect, then there is Ross Wright who has been a rock in our front row (when hooking) and even had some time in the BLues team in a pre-season match about 4 or so years back (under Lam IIRC) he has been hindered by being signed as a hooker and played as a prop.

Moulds seems to have all the attributes, apparently very good work/training ethics, Tana (or may have been JK) said he was a good leader for the young guys, yet neither JK or Tana seem to give him much time on the park, so yeah I'd be surprised if he is retained, and TBH if I was him it might be time to look elsewhere too unless he is being 'promised' better things.

  • Come on boys. I am unusually optimistic about this game for some reason.

Maybe because it hasn't started but still....

  • Shit start again. Jack Ram got handed off...

  • Followed by the biggest not straight and Wellington win a penalty. Shit refereeing and now 10 nil

  • quick out of the blocks again!

  • Kick out on full, penalty ... Shit

  • this is gonna get ugly unless they can sort thier shit out, fast!

  • Do the basics well and the points will come.

  • Only way we touch the ball/get out of our own half is when we have to kick off.

  • Now we need a good scrum.

    Get angry boys

  • We have an attacking 5m scrum.

Who's going to put their hand up to make the mistake this time?

  • @kev said in v Wellington:

problem is, its the basics thats been letting us down, regularly!

My bad, no need to single out anyone when the whole pack can fuck it up.

  • How can he call that not straight and miss Wellingtons fuck fuck fuck

    THe ref?

  • Jack Ram needs to put his shoulder into his tackles

  • Their offloading is going to kill us later in this game when we tire after making 50 thousand tackles.

  • @Gunner said in v Wellington:

his game when we tire after making 50 thousand tackles.

better making 50,000 tackles than miss the number we are.....

  • Great try!

  • Great work Nock.

  • Robinson was held back there

  • How do we manage to get smashed so far behind the advantage line with front foot ball like that?

  • How the fuck was that knocked on?
    Went 1m backwards.
    The ref is a cock.

  • Bullshit reffing again

  • Dowd is a cock

  • Great break out there to fi ish the half.
But, that's the second time we've made a break and there's been two or three of our fullas get there, then the rest turn up about half an hour later.
Where is the urgency and/or fitness to capitalize on these breaks?

Really really lucky to still be in this after the way we started.

  • What a shit start again. We can win this if we don't run out of gas...big if.

Some really poor reffing decisions, so basic you wonder what the hell?

Just need to get the small decisions right and make sure we get shoulders into tackles. A couple if times early Jack Ram has been flat footed and let players fend him off. He picked up though as he always does....

Yea we seem to lack energy and urgency quite a bit...have we got a new fitness trainer??

We need to sort out our starts, they arent just slow, they are rubbish, putting ourselves in too deeper a hole to get out of.

  • Fuck Wellington have had some luck.

The amount of times the bounce of the ball has gone their way is ridiculous.

  • Wow, what a scrum, what a try.

  • Goodhue looks buggered here.
    Captains curse.

  • No surprises, another loss.

What's up with our fucking awful starts to games? Can't win when you give teams 15-20 point head starts.

As Sumo said during commentary, why wasn't Matich starting?
We haven't won a game in two bloody years, so in my eyes you play your very best team available to you week in week out until you get the W.

Don't care what improvements have been made from last season to this one, the fact remains that under this coach we haven't won a game, so he's gotta go.

  • Couldn't get in to this site for the half. A bit annoying.

Another game where we let things get away by not executing the simple things. Just a mental thing. By the time we got going we were in the game but shit 17 points down by then.

Finally I think we have players in the right positions.

We just need to be smarter - play the game in the right zone. Do what they did with malls - stand off.

  • I like to try and tone down player criticism, as I've been a shocker in the past, but can someone please tell me what Malcom Macleod adds to this team? This contracting business is a joke, as that chap Markwick is a way better option....

Macleod throws shit passes left right and centre, and takes a few steps before offloading. Not good enough.

I agree with other i thinking we should have our best side week in week out, we just need to get that W. Gotta go all out now, rip, shit and bust. Stop this rotation crap and just put the best team out there..

Getting sick of this losing business. We have the basis of a team that can get results, but its almost as if we've forgotten how to win..

  • Yes - we have got a team that can win - the scrum is competitive, our bench seems to add impact, lots of good young players in the forwards and the backs are now coming along - Nock starting to run games, Tua is looking good at centre, Alaimalo looks better on the wing, Wood will get better at fullback.

We just need to start well, make good decisions ( e.g. We finally worked out how to defend malls by not starting them ) and we will win. Getting that win is so important now to reflect the ability in the team.

Hope they can keep this team together, keep the standards up and keep improving.

  • I wonder if Harris knows his best side...don't think our loose trio or mid field have been the same on consecutive weeks, granted we've had injuries and the odd bit about Dan not knowing the rules.

    For me:
    Waa, wright, kite
    Neville, Goodhue
    Ram, matich, Pryor
    Nock, breen
    Hyland, tua
    Macilai, wood, alaimona

That team should start next week.

Our subs are often baffling, although our fitness is a concern too...

Our energy levels just seem down, granted consecutive losses will do that, but when you see them walking to restarts it just makes it seem like they don't want to be there.
