7. Openside Flanker of the Year 2016

  • Please nominate for McCaw Award.

    Rules in main forum.

All arguments for and against encouraged and in fact required during nomination phase.

As noted in the blindside nomination thread some countries are deliberately dusrispicting the institutions that are the roles of open and blindside flanker. As such, where appropriate argument is presented, players may be considered in multiple looseforward polls.

Surname First Name Country Pros Cons
POCOCK David AUS Nominated by Paul Cully in SMH Hooper is better; no credibility as an option for best 7; no Australian would be selected based on whole year's form
    OBRIEN Sean IRE pretty impressive
HASKELL James IRE Nominated in World XV thread - no reason given; brutally outstanding v Aus on tour; lots of massive tackles playing 7 but like a 6
HOOPER Michael (AUS) Better than Pocock; Energizer Bunny ("Oi!"); non-stop tackling machine; link man; line breaker "no Australian would be selected based on whole year's form"; weird eyes
TODD Matt NZL Deserves nomination; outstanding in Canes' absesnce; showed up the 6'2" Savea unlikley
CANE Samuel NZL best going when fit; tackle machine (led count in most tests); pest at breakdown; Fox Comms appointed him the new McCaw after Sydney injuries
Van der FLIER Josh IRE "better"; delivered in SA and Nov

  • Michael Hooper. Energizer bunny. Nonstop tackling machine, link man, and line breaker. Never gets benched. Never stops.

  • Matt Todd deserves a shout even if he's unlikely to take it out. Was outstanding in Canes absence, really filled a void that in hindsight Ardie was not ready to fill.

  • When fit and firing Sam Cane was the best going IMO. Led tackle count in almost all tests he played, pest at the breakdown etc.

  • Haskell was brutally outstanding in the Pom tour of England, was more like a turbo charged 6 than a 7, but by crikey he was effective. Made a ridiculous number of tackles & almost all of them huge

  • Josh van der Flier because he's better and for a newbie delivered very well in SA and during November Internationals..
