9. Halfback of the Year 2016

  • Please nominate for Angriest Short Person of the year.

    Rules in main forum.

All arguments for and against encouraged and in fact required during nomination phase.

Surname First Name Country Pros Cons
MURRAY Connor IRE Nominated by Paul Cully in SMH; potentially best in position currently; good performance v Abs in Chicago; a toss up between Webb and Smith with Young with Smith and Murray being more complete; even if just for his performance in Chicago; "Far from outstanding in 6N; Smith better than Murray for balance of the year; potentially best in position currently; has not been the best halfback in the world this year; Neither his kicking nor his passing have been world class; best NH 9 for some: Very solid all round game, seems to be the hub of most things that Ireland have done well this year; not up to previous standards"; not as good as Smith or TJP
PERENARA Thomas NZL "really came into some blinding form when the ABs needed him to"; pretty good year; "question mark on passing" "doesn't have the all-round game of Murray"
SMITH Aaron NZL "was himself before entering the ChCh airport; better than Murray for balance of the year; has been the benchmark this year (and last); good games were outstanding outweighing his less than good; "still first pick"; a toss up between Webb and Smith with Young with Smith and Murray being more complete; Good initially" Form affected post Chch
    GENIA Will AUS general play has been fine; managed to keep it in his pants while at the airport; shows glimpses of the player he was; still dangerous (just like Maverick according to Iceman ...); shone despite pack that left him exposed; Opinion that no Australian should be selected based on the whole of the year; "could take Genia"; shows glimpses of the player he was but not enough to warrant selection; some stupid box kicks;
WEBB Rhys WAL One of the standout NH 9s; a toss up between Webb and Smith with Youngs making a late charge Smith and Murray more complete
YOUNGS Ben ENG One of the standout NH 9s; as definitely finished the year well; looks sharper than he has for a long time; massively important to England; great EOYT matches "not the best 9"

  • Until his visit to Christchurch airport, undisputed really for Aaron of the Smiths...after, doesn't make any conversation about best in world.

  • TJP

Murray, who isn't as good as TJP nor Aaron, but is a very good combination of both of them.

  • Youngs. Not that I'm saying he's the best 9 but his contributions to and importance to England make him vital. His performances in the Autumn series I feel give him a shot in TOTY albeit a late charger's shot. Also, no-one else over the whole year has put their hand up any higher. IMO he ends the year as No1 or very close to it.

Did he get a black Jersey on at any stage this year? 🤔

Just trying to think if he qualifies 😉

  • @NTA bitter Strayns...

Actually reading back on the previous ToTYs I'm really surprised at how nany non-NZers make the team. And how many are kind of meh in the great scheme of things.

  • Ita a team sport. So picking individual players is kind of difficult when there have been two teams dominate this year, that didn't go head to head.

If the criteria is "could they slot into the ABs?" then you could probably pick Genia, Murray, or Youngs in that AB lineup as well as TJP or DT Smith.

  • @NTA England wore thier alternative black strip didnt they?

This. It's sort of the Parisse conundrum. Is he that good or does he just shine in a shite team? How about if he doesn't play for Italy but plays for NZ? How good would he be? Better than Read ? (The previous rather than the current one).

    Never an easy answer.

  • In the name of futility, I'll nominate Genia. Still a very dangerous player, despite a rusty start to the season and a pack that was often failing to work hard enough for clean ball. Some stupid box kicks, no doubt.

Can't help but think how much better he'd be if he was playing in a decent competition instead of the French Retirement Fund Top 14.

If Richard Graham hadn't spent so much time fucking up the Reds.... c'est la vie

  • Eh Murray. And then Murray.

Just for his one match alone against decent opposition. Scored. Floored. Kicked. Masterminded.

No other 9 comes near. All year.
