People in Iran probably feel the same. Some are putting their lives on the line to stand up to their tyrant.

What I do find awfully amusing about media & politicos losing their shit about Trump retaliating to Dear Leader’s boast about his (tiny) nuclear stockpile, is that these same knuckleheads were only months ago sabre-rattling provocations against Russia, which has a very real and huge nuclear stockpile, declaring that a completely unproven cyber-hack was an “act of war.” Never heard a peep from CNN about how deplorable that situation was, yet Drumpf’s tweets are the end of the world!!!!

Apples and oranges in relation to the populace and for that matter the geography and dispersion of the populace.

@salacious-crumb North Korea, China (and Iran) don't have twitter
Nuclear war posturing via twitter looks a lot like grotesque attention seeking behaviour in this instance.
It's no more than " my dad could beat your dad in a fight" -

It's no more than " my dad could beat your dad in a fight"There are people in Iran and China that are accessing twitter against their governments will. NK... who knows, seems like next level oppression there so perhaps not.
I agree when you first read the tweet WTF comes to mind, we've never had this type of stuff from the American President before.
But, the situation in places like NK and Iran, and Pakistan for that matter have been festering away for decades with no meaningful action at all. Obama really just tried to be a nice guy and appease everyone, which has only allowed things to worsen in hindsight.
I'm OK with a different approach, as something has to give with these countries - sooner rather than later is probably best. Reaching out to people via social media is not the worst idea.

@siam you don't reckon Kim lurks on Twitter?
Everytime Trump claims his twitter account was hacked it's Kim!!
-
@no-quarter a different approach sure but you're assuming the people will put Trumps point of view ahead of their own country.
Tweeting nuclear threats?
How do you react to threats?
I can tell you that Asians universally react with a big " fuck you"
We've dealt with nuclear threats before with Russia and Mao. Reagan even wrote about how he had to water down his messages during the cold war. He was worried about panicking the populace.
We dealt with those leaders and threats with behind the scenes diplomacy and negotiation.It worked
Trumps tweets serve no purpose but to shine light on himself. No other purpose or effectiveness at all.
Reminds me of the mouthy fluffybunny in a pub safe in the knowledge his mates will do all the fighting if something kicks off

@catogrande halfbacks?

@taniwharugby More certain than death and taxes. Oh and nurses, they're dead certs too.

Yeah, look, I don't disagree with a lot of that. There's definitely an element of posturing and "look at me". I'm not going to defend Trump on a personal level, I think he's a dick. I think a lot of politicians are dicks, but it's what they do/achieve that really matters.
I think his tweets do serve a purpose beyond what you describe. People in Iran have thanked him for his support based on his tweets - that's never happened before.
NK is another kettle of fish though, and quite different to previous nuclear threats in that NK know they will be promptly wiped off the planet if they do anything. I think he wants to back Kim into a corner and force his hand, and if he can garner any support from within NK that's a bonus. Something has to give, I don't think we can allow a pyschotic dictator as much time as he wants to keep bolstering his nuclear arsenal.
-
@taniwharugby kinda.
Just a thought that occurred. It would reinforce his reputation and reassure Billy Bob that POTUS is ensuring Murcka is Great Again: bigger and badder than NK anyway.
-
@booboo totally mate.
North korean citizens won't see it without a Kim spin.
Kim and his military team know exactly that bombing the US is a suicide move (fuck the whole world knows that!) and he has channels to deliver a similarly chilling message to him privately.This sort of bragging doesn't really do much for Japan China and South Korea's efforts at keeping this nutjob under some control either.
Totally self serving

@booboo said in North Korea:
Anyone think he's tweeting to the Trumpsters at home rather than the NK populace or Kim?
All of his tweets play to his base at home, exactly the same way Obama, Hillary and Bernie tweet. That's politics for you today.

The problem is nobody is keeping this nutjob under control. He didn't have nuclear weapons, now he does. Allowing someone like that to develop nuclear capability is not what I would call "under control". The harsh reality is that something has to give.
-
@no-quarter can't control all the nutjobs in the world mate.
Nothing will stop him choosing the decimation of his own country.
I say let China "control" him. That's got better chance of stopping him flinging bombs - which is all we can do, and have done for a long time.Tweeting to a room with no north koreans in it achieves nothing in my opinjon
As unpalatable as it may be foreign intervention doesn't seem to build great nations
