Is that really all it takes to get Italian citizenship? Surely as an adult he would have to sign something himself. How on earth could his mother apply for Italian citizenship on his behalf without some kind of authorisation from him?
Seems very fishy.
Bloke I know - similar situation where he had Italian heritage and parents made him become a dual citizen - said he had to front at the consulate with photo ID, signed forms etc
Was he an adult?

Guy I knew had his parents do the same thing for him as a kid which was all well and good until he went to visit his relatives in Lebanon and someone at immigration picked it up. When he went to go home he was pulled aside and asked why he hadn't done his compulsory years in the military in Lebanon, fortunately for him while he was being questioned it emerged that he was the only son and therefore exempt.
Fuck that.

Years? Sweet Jesus, how long does it take to learn Lebanese marksmanship principles?

@Paekakboyz definite brown trousers moment, no idea about their army but I think they were backed by Syria back then . He went from cursing his parents to thanking them for never having another son .

@Rancid-Schnitzel on the ABC this morning they had dug out the application papers. Apparently it's plausible, application must be signed by the applicant (ie his mum) but not necessarily the intended recipient of citizenship, ie him.
This has been a fucked up week even by Australian political standards.

I find it a bit weird that his mother would apply for Italian citizenship on his behalf and never tell him. Seems like something that might at least be mentioned a some stage.

@Rancid-Schnitzel of course the whole explanation is retarded.
BUT, apparently it was cheaper to do the whole family at the same time. That's definitely something i can see a mother doing.
There is still no way he didn't know about it.

Particularly an Italian mother...

If it can't be proven that he knew about it, then surely he's in the clear. It's farking tinpot shit that someone can take out citizenship for another adult without their explicit consent.
This is a classic case of the Shane Warne defence.

@antipodean says he was 18

@antipodean not always...

If her bus pass gets her into nightclubs, she's 18, just slow.

@antipodean Could they even have fathomed the concept of a Greens party?

Was looking into this earlier in the week. Looks pretty straightforward for a parent. I think there is admission that it was discussed but whether or not there was consent is another thing. There was some family stuff around that time. His father was convicted of a major fraud and jailed. I think the mother was looking at her options...
ACQUISITION OF ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP
Italian citizenship can be acquired in one of the following ways:- AUTOMATIC ACQUISITION
CITIZENSHIP AS A RESULT OF ITALIAN PARENTS/ANCESTORS (āiure sanguinisā)
Children of Italian parents (mother or father) who are Italian citizens. Citizenship is passed on from parent to child without limitation of generation, on the condition that none of the ancestors has ever renounced their citizenship.
Transmission of citizenship through maternal lineage is possible only for persons born after January 1st 1948.
A minor child living with a parent at the moment in which that parent becomes an Italian citizen also acquires Italian citizenship. Contrary to past legislation, current legislation recognises the right to hold more than one citizenship simultaneously.
Ascertainment of citizenship. When a person claims to be of Italian parentage or ancestry but no proof of the fact can be found in Italian registers, it is necessary to provide proof that all ancestors have maintained, and thereby passed on, their Italian citizenship. The authority legally valid to ascertain these facts depends on the personās place of residence: for foreign residents, the diplomatic-consular mission in the country of residence; for residents in Italy the official statistics office (Anagrafe) office of the city of residence.
