I used to knock around with a lot of French people back when LP's father went to the 2nd round and was trounced by Chiraq. LePen was like a leper. He garnered support from the very pissed off and the desperate, but there was a stench surrounding him that would never go away. Seems to me that Ms LePen is still tainted by things that were said and done in the past. Being the daughter of the founder doesn't exactly disassociate the party from it's origins. Perhaps a bit like the BNP (although I don't believe they're reformed) or ex-communist parties (Linke in Germany for instance). There's a reputation and legacy there that you just can't shake no matter how hard you try.
Would be very interesting to see how this kind of party would go with a Trump or Farage type character in charge and without the seedy baggage.
*Amusing fact: Automatic spellcheck changes Farage to Garage.

Oh shit I totally forgot to write about what happened.
So yeah late on Friday night before the media blackout started, a twitter account that was known to the french authorities published a link to 9gig of hacked documents from the Macron campaign. This was then retweeted 86 times within a few minutes. Which the government are saying looks to have been a botnet. It was later retweeted by the FN chairman just before the blackout.
Macrons team came out and said the data was from a few months back and from what they could tell it was a mixture of real and forged documents. But they did not have time to check it all.
Why does this matter. Well the government are saying it was deliberately timed so that the data could not be checked nor could it be reported on leaving the public to speculate as to the contents. They are investigating and threatened that anyone caught redistributing or promoting the existence of the data during the blackout period would be prosecuted. Last I heard they are saying its the Russians but are launching a full investigation.
What had people talking in the street was the apparent blatant nature of the attempt to influence the election. Not so much who or why, but the fact that it was not being done in dark shady deals but in full sight of the world.

@mooshld It's near enough accurate to be mildly amusing. Dunno how long you've been in France mooched but your last sentence suggest just about the right amount of time.
Le Roi est mort. Vive le Roi!
No I just found it odd as one of the main lines of attack on him was that he was a continuation of the existing government and was an institutional stooge. A bit difficult to be both that and a no experience business man.
I have been here nearly 6 years now. All in Paris but have long term ambitions on the south west.

@mooshld it's this strange thing we have in the English speaking world called "humour". Google it.
That was humour?
Humour according to Frank

Anywhere in particular? I find it a different world down there (away from the resorts and towns anyway), different in a good way too. I must admit to being slightly envious.

France had the chance to elect a Trump-like figure, instead they went with a rich white businessman with no government experience.
Who is competent, pro immigration, pro green / renewables & so on & so on, but feel free to utterly ignore everything about the guy & focus on the one thing that makes you warm.
He's also thrashed the candidate Trump endorsed & predicted would win.

@mooshld during the last election here that sock puppet Greenwald was tweeting all day about how there was a press blackout on Election Day and how bizarre and unheard of it was and from your posts it looks like France has the same deal with the press?

I picked up a house this year near Pau. About an hour from the coast.

@mooshld Nice. We toured down there a (good) few years ago, Some nice little towns like Mauborguet and Artagnan. Tiny little places but surprisingly strong rugby teams. Brutal too.
We went to visit a place called the Cirque du Gavarnie in the Pyrenees. It looked amazing but that could have been the effect of all the wine previously consumed.

@Rancid-Schnitzel More liked expressed support or admiration. Weak endorsement at best.
