I saw "Public Enemies" yesterday. Pretty good, but I can't say it's any better than the Warren Oates version, which I haven't seen in many years but used to enjoy. I'd rate 7/10, but with some reservations, especially in some of the oddball decisions used for film stock, but that's getting deep into the weeds.<br />
<br />
One thing that caught my eye, like "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" (feat. Bobby Orr cameo), was a clip from the movie "Manhattan Melodrama" (1934) starring Clark Gable, William Powell, Myrna Loy and Mickey Rooney. (The movie was playing Chicago's Biograph theatre just before the FBI iced Dillinger.) <br />
<br />
In the short clip, the Gable and Powell characters are at a hockey game, presumably Madison Square Gardens, but the clip was too short. (Wikipedia informs me that, "Blackie then arranges the murder of Snow in the bathroom of Madison Square Garden in order to protect Jim.")<br />
<br />
I'll have to look for that movie, it might be some of the earliest NHL footage in movies. I can't tell the teams, the clip was too short, but one did look like the Rangers, and the 1933 New York Rangers were the Stanley Cup champions that season (beat the Leafs).
<br />
<br />
Did you watch the recent Criterion reissue of The Friends of Eddie Coyle, RT? Probably the best thing I have seen this year. -
I'm with everyone else on Angels & demons....pants

<br />
Yes, was excellent. I hadn't seen the movie in many, many years. They showed it on TCM recently, and I went and rented the Criterion disc to see it again. -

Watchmen; given some mixed views of it on here, was not sure what to expect, and TBH, after watching am still no better off, 5/10.<br />
<br />
Watched Transformers, I enjoyed it, 7.9/10. -
Burn After REading.<br />
<br />
Not a bad movie, strange plot, interesting characters. Brad Pitt makes the movie playing this gym geek & is absolutely hilarious. The final scene is pretty funny too. Certainly not a comedy all the way through though.<br />

Interesting story but hardly funny at all, I barely recall laughing - bit of a let down when you rent out a "comedy" to watch on a rainy day. Would reccomend only there wasn't something else exciting to do, like knitting or folding clothes... -
Made by the Coen brothers should be a clue that's it's going to be a bit odd. I was just stoked to see David Rache pulling out his SledgeHammer act again, brilliant actor <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

<br />
Anyone seen it and care to give a scary out of ten rating??
<br />
<br />
Drag me to hell? Mate absolutely fantastic! Its old school scary. None of the teen scream BS. Sam Raimi the director of evil dead and SPIDER-MAN made this one.<br />
I'd say scary rating 9 out of 10. -

Its not hugely gory. It isn't the sadistic type violence you get in "Saw" and "Hostel". Its just scary more than anything. -

I'm with you Hooroo.<br />

The five scariest movies I ever saw were Hell House , the first Freddie Kruger movie, The Omen,the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Others. I have refused to watch a scary as in spooky/gory movie ever since The Others. I used to go to the Sunday night movies in Levin in the 70's when you would get a spooky double header such as Dracula and then a Frankenstein movie but never got spooked until Hell House and that did my head in fully. xzxshok -
"Chinatown" for the umpteenth time. Stunning, timeless movie. A true great - script, acting, plot & cinematography outstanding<br />
<br />
"Flightplan" with Jodie Foster - good, enjoyable film. Quite tense in places<br />
<br />
Concur on Angels and Demons - utter shite.<br />
<br />
Watching Soderburgh's "The Limey" tomorrow nite -
Knowing - despite Nicholas Cage and a kak ending [spoiler:cjyxh2uz]the whole Alien deal, not to mention when you first realise there is something out of this world supernatural about them[/spoiler:cjyxh2uz] I quite liked it, a few genuine tingly moments. <br />

7.5/10 -
Saw 21 not that long ago - one about a math's whizz who via his college professor earn's stacks of cash counting cards at blackjack - quite interesting...
<br />
if you haven't read it, try the book(s), they're infinitely better than the film. They're written by Ben Mezrich and are excellent, first one's Breaking Vegas, the second is Bringing Down the House (or the other way around).
