Strange that he needs to defend them from a guy he's already knocked to the ground

Obviously the investigation will be more than viewing the video but I will be surprised if Stokes can use provocation as a defence. You can usually only use provocation as a defence when you come to the aid of certain people and I would be surpised if random strangers, whether they are gay or not, would be sufficuent for provocation in England. Even if Stokes was in a relationship with one of the gay men it probably wouldn't be enough.
The best chance for Stokes might be for the victim to want to settle out of court.

Don't know the law, but the first 'action' on the actual videos (who knows what happened before the vid starts) is one of the guys hitting one of Stokes' group with a bottle, misses his head and seems to hit his upper back. Stokes then tackles that guy to the ground.
melee ensues. But Stokes actually KOs the other fella (out of the 2) in the end, which won't help.

@rapido you are right it does appear to show the guy with the bottle. I would have no issues with the actions of Stokes at the beginning but things do become cloudy the longer the video goes on. This is why police absolutely hate assault complaints coming out of drunken brawls. They are always fucking messy to investigate and often the victim's actions have led to his beating. Usually the person complaining to police is the one who lost the 'fight'.
