Springboks v Wallabies - Bloemfontein

  • RETURN OF THE 24TH PLAYER!!! Cheika pulling out all the stops for this one 😉

    • 50th cap for Foley (who has 499 Test points)
    • 1st Starting cap for Rodda, Dempsey, and Koroibete
    • Possible debut for Lukhan Tui - depending on 6-2 bench I'd say as Hanigan has the experience of 7 Tests now.
    1. Scott Sio (36 Tests)

    2. Tatafu Polota-Nau (75 Tests)

    3. Sekope Kepu (84 Tests)

    4. Izack Rodda (2 Tests)

    5. Adam Coleman (15 Tests)

    6. Jack Dempsey (3 Tests)

    7. Michael Hooper (C) (72 Tests)

    8. Sean McMahon (19 Tests)

    9. Will Genia (vc) (82 Tests)

    10. Bernard Foley (vc) (49 Tests)

    11. Reece Hodge (17 Tests)

    12. Kurtley Beale (64 Tests)

    13. Tevita Kuridrani (51 Tests)

    14. Marika Koroibete (1 Test)

    15. Israel Folau (59 Tests)

    16. Stephen Moore (122 Tests)

    17. Tom Robertson (13 Tests)

    18. Allan Alaalatoa (16 Tests)

    19. Rob Simmons (75 Tests)

    20. Ned Hanigan (7 Tests)

    21. Lukhan Tui*

    22. Nick Phipps (55 Tests)

    23. Samu Kerevi (11 Tests)

    24. Henry Speight (16 Tests)

    One player to be omitted

  • Hooper is looking good to be the first player to 150, if not 200 caps

  • @majorrage turns 26 in a month. He should crack 100 before he's thirty.

  • Henry Speight drops out of the match day squad - meaning Lukhan Tui is likely to debut at the ripe old age of 21.

That's a complete tight five + Hanigan on the bench, and a fairly meaty one with Tui weighing in at 123kg (198cm).

  • 51 tests for Kuridrani surprises me. It isn't as if he has set the world on fire to hold down his spot.

  • @crucial had a couple of good seasons where his ball running was very incisive for us, running off Giteau

  • @crucial awesome first year, dud for a good couple of years afterwards, glimpses again recently. weird.

The season they thrashed the old Brumbies lineout set play where they gave him an angled run at speed? Yeah, he was quite good at that.

  • @crucial Think so - was a while back and I don't watch Super Rugby much.

In any case, I've always found him and Speight to be defensive liabilities. When they get a shoulder on its usually pretty good. But their positioning is shit, and you know it is by how vehemently any Brumbies fan will defend them over it.

At his best he is kind of a half-Mortlock.

he at the very least held his own against conrad that year. at the least.

  • That hair pull / tackle on Leyds should have been a yellow card. Disgusting.

Yep, swiftly followed by the yellow for the idiot bokke captain.

    Captain is doing his role.

  • @justanotherfan which is to try and go after Folau then realise he's the same size so change tack and pin Genia on the ground and rub his forearm in his face? Man he's tough.

  • Skosan makes up for that pathetic non attempt on Koroibete.

  • Man Coetzee really lacks any kind of oomph on attack.

  • Moore arguing with the ref because he wasn't allowed to advance to ten metres from where Jantjies was taking the shot. Surely he knows that.

  • Nothing worse than a Kiwi ref.

  • @justanotherfan haaaaaahahahahaha. Good on ya wallabies. Saffas can't even win at home. At least your guys scored some points. Certificates for everyone!

  • Nothing separating these two (mediocre) teams....

  • With that draw, the Springboks and Wallabies just handed the RC to the All Blacks!

  • @stargazer don't really think the ABs are going to lose in Argieland.

Funny old season for us. Couldn't shut out the ABs or quite get over the Boks. Could be looking at 4 wins instead of 1.

Not sure what you are referring to specifically or if it is just bait but i somewhat agree in this case.
This ref is out of his depth at super rugby level. Don't know why he is doing internationals.
I guess it is just two lowly ranked teams though.

  • "He grabbed the guy around the collar," Cheika said.

When further probed on the issue, Cheika was even more adamant.

"You've got to watch the vision (replay) ... he got him by the collar," the coach re-iterated.

"He didn't come in and grab him by the hair. Who tackles somebody by the hair? Forget about it ... it's a non-issue."

Our eye doctor was already a nightmare at NPC level. I don't get how he's been able to progress through the ranks so quickly. He debuted as an ITM Cup ref in 2013, SR in 2015, international in 2016.

  • Just saw highlights. Seemed like an entertaining game but way too many mistakes. Some real headless chicken shit there.

  • @booboo

I wonder if that should be a penalty similar to a shoulder tackle riding up? TBF, the tackle on the collar is likely penalisable on its own under today's reffing.

  • Two things.

    1. Re Folau. Am a bit torn on this. Reckon he started with the collar but slipped up to hair. No real intent but it was high and dangerous. Yellow for me. Not sure if it gets cited as possibly not red card threshold.

    2. Skosan's try. One for the gear grinding thread. I have no issue with having two attacking backlines and using the "second man play", but it grinds my gears when the screen in front continues running into the defence to disrupt them and create holes. Brast and 20 made the holes for Skosan to run in into.

Definitely - He grabbed the collar, turned out he had hair as well (insert joke about the guy having girly long hair) - the grip on collar slipped, he ended up just having a grip on the poor fluffybunny's hair, took a little too long to release that.
On the slow-motion replays... that looks real bad. In real time, he was probably a bit slow in realising he was holding a bunch of some guys hair... maybe instinctively thought there was a BJ in the works.

  • I actually thought this was a bloody entertaining game. Both sides showed great intent.

As a Wallabies fan, I'll take a draw on the high veldt any day. The Boks played well enough, and that's a game we usually lose. Our attack was nice and our defence solid considering the Boks had the weight of possession.

As for the ref - fark me there's been some whinging. He was fine. Couple of missed calls (booboo you're so fkn right about those decoy runners, they did my head in) but did it affect the result? No.

So much bleating online though. From fans of both teams. And from our coach. God I wish people would just focus on the footy. The ref blew a few bad calls, like they do every game. Get over it.

  • Watched the replay and it's not a bad game tbh. Just poor options/ finishing ruined it for either team who could have won it.

You can't tackle on the collar - that's a penalty.

He then continued to pull the player by the hair. That's a YC, but shouldn't meet a RC threshold so hopefully common sense prevails and he doesn't get cited.

Quite frankly, if women can play and put their long hair in a bun to prevent this from happening, men can too. Or get a haircut.

    alt text

  • @antipodean some women don’t wear it in a bun....

    alt text

  • @act-crusader The smart ones do.
@antipodean And yeah - I was thinking the same... most of the ladies are clever enough to braid/bun their hair. The guys should be 'a head' of the game too.
But... that's not taking away from the fact that yeah, Folau should maybe have gotten a bit more of a penalty than he did. If anything, I wonder if Etzebeth being a cock actually mitigated the whole thing, and if he'd actually @JustAnotherFan "Captain is doing his role" - by being sensible, cool-headed and letting the ref do his job - there would have been a YC.
I was supporting the saffas in this game, but FFS - Etzebeth makes that hard.

  • I'm very certain Leyds (sp?) Had his hair tied up, if it matters.

Wobblies have conceeded one point less. Still keeping their edge.

    AMAZING STATS:

Both the Springboks and the Wallabies have played 101 102 Rugby Championship matches.

Of those, each side has won 42 matches, lost 57 and drawn 2 3.

Even more bizarre is that, in all of that time, the Wallabies have conceded 2,472 2,495 Rugby Championship points to South Africa's 2,473 2,496.
