2018 masters

  • Masters week is here!

Looks to be a very open tournament this year plus the added hype that TIGER is back, joining Leishman and Fleetwood for the first two rounds

Cant wait for it for it to get underway

So who are we all picking to take home the green jacket?

  • @jk yeah seems pretty open with the form players of the past few years in DJ, Day, Speith, McIlroy et al not at the peaks they were.

Sadly I think Tiger will be all hype, but hey, cant hurt the game with him there!

Reckon it'll be a nobody from nowhere that will take this one.

  • DJ still world number 1....but very under the radar. He is a player who should do well at Augusta but hasnt yet.

Would like to see Tiger do well. Two top 5s in his past 4 starts is pretty promising. He also knows Augusta probably better than anyone in the field.

I reckon Tiger will go pretty well. His last three Tournaments show he is still rather useful apart from a couple of capitulations towards the end. I imagine he will overcome those though

  • @hooroo oh yeah, don't get me wrong, he is still a great player and still has some flashes of his old brilliance, but whether he can pull it off for 72 holes is the key...love to be wrong and it'd be a great story if he does, but not sure he can.

  • My top 3.... Speith, Rose, Thomas

  • My top 3: Woods...

  • I want to see Woods win, then jump straight into a limo of hookers!! With John Daley driving smoke and beer in hand. That'd be epic 😁

But seriously hoping Tiger does well. Nobody gets golf fans frothing like he does.

  • One of my fave annual sporting events ... and here I am going to Paris to celebrate a fucking wedding anniversary ...

    Predictions
    Woods won't make the cut
Poulter, who is all the talk of the UK after winning the Houston open, to finish top 10
Sergio to barely make the cut
    Dustin to win it.

Jokes on him with the mother of all fucking train strikes taking place for the next 3 months he may never make it and be trapped in some shithole train station with his pissed off wife.

yes, keeping a close eye on this .. fingers are x'd ...

    Davey, is that you?

  • Fucking french. I've been to Paris once, and guess what? The trains were on strike. You get to see a lot of paris walking everywhere

  • Poor old Tony Finau! Nice ace in the hole in one tournament then ran off down fairway celebrating and dislocated his ankle! Managed to fire it back in to place and finish the 9 but didnt seem too keen to talk about it post round and could now be in doubt!

Took a couple of tiger special bets $2 to score 1 or more eagles (surely) and $17.50 to go bogey free in any one round. Worth a small play

  • I've had a crack at good odds on Bubba Watson, Justin Rose and Paul Casey.

A really open tournament. I think Tiger looms and finishes top 10, though I'm still unsure he can string together four straight rounds in a major. Tipping a 76 on the Friday or Saturday followed by a too-little-too-late charge on Sunday.

DJ, Spieth or Thomas could very well win, and comfortably.

  • I watched some of the par 3 tournament yesterday. It was bloody interesting. The greens are obviously setup to make it seem a bit easier, but the sheer quality of the play was still enlightening.

Player, Nicklaus and Tom Watson were strolling around, going to tee to hold regularly in 2, big crowds, lots of fun events (caddies holes, kids holes, skim ball holes etc).

And then they interviewed Bubba. It became pretty clear why he's not well liked. Sheesh, cheer up man - it's fun!

  • It looks as open as it's ever been this year with plenty of players showing some recent form and you can make a case for any of around 20 to win.

Rose looks a good bet. Always seems to be around the leaders as does Thomas. Would love to see Rory in the mix. If his putter goes well he'll have a good week. Woods relies a lot on his putting - so likewise for him.

  • Jon Rahm for me.

  • Crappy start for Woods ... although has birdied as I type this to go 2 over and 6 off the lead.

Cannot control the ball off the tee. All over the show!

  • A few players having trouble at the 15th

Garcia has just put 3 4 5 in the water! Spinning back on the green and down the slope in to the drink!

Makes the green for 12! Sinks the putt for a 13!

  • @jk said in 2018 masters:

Being able to get up and down is what makes a Masters winner!

  • Man golf can be a fluffybunny. Goes from winning his first big time event, to going down in flames the following year. Fickle mistress indeed!!

Hope Tiger improves from here on out. Seems like he's close enough to stay in the mix, but if the current leaders maintain, or improve, Tiger will need to show some magic to claw his way back.

On radio sport this morning Marshall was leaning towards Stenson or Mickelson as likely winners. But it is early doors. Caught a bit of coverage - man, it's beautiful to watch - they do a great job.

  • Finau equal top on 4 under with 2 to play. Not bad for dislocating his ankle the previous day

Had no problems getting it down but getting it up in the first place was the issue!

  • It's karma for Sergio Garcia dining out on his Masters win for the last 12 months like never seen before.

Naming his kid after the 13th hole, wearing his green jacket to his own wedding reception, also wearing said green jacket when attending events ranging from El Classico to Wimbledon.

It's what I imagine would have happened if Shooter McGavin won the Tour Championship gold jacket.

  • Tin Cup!!

That big Tongan bloke can hit a ball. Bit too hard at times.

  • @mariner4life said in 2018 masters:

    Tin Cup!!

Don’t worry Roy Sergio, they’ll still be talking about your 13 forever! It was legendary. Now let’s go to the Waffle House.

  • Speith with 5 birdies in a row (masters record I believe) then a HORROR drive down 18. Recovery shot back to the fairway and then fires one in to the crowd

  • Wow...then chips it to a couple of inches for a tap in bogey. Pure class

  • @rocky-rockbottom said in 2018 masters:

I dunno, should the course be punishing shots that land right near the pin like his did?

If he's putting that much back spin on them, sure. A good golfer knows to have his ball finish near the flag, not just land there.

  • @mariner4life said in 2018 masters:

    Tin Cup!!

    Far Cup!!

  • Yeah you feel for Sergio, but then again why did he keep hitting the same fucking shot?

Surely after the first three you aim for the fatter part of the green (on the left) and take the hazard out of play? Or you take your drop much closer to the hazard so you remove the chance of the ball spinning back?

My approach would be simple. After I dunked the first three balls in the hazard, I'd pick up my bag, throw it in the water and head for the bar.

  • Having Spieth in front again sets up a fascinating last few days.

Has he slayed the demons of 2016? Of his last four approach shots to 12 on Sunday, he's hit three in the water.

Even if he has a 15 shot lead, you know he'll be sweating when he stands on that tee...

  • I hope Tiger gets in contention or misses the cut - if he's lurking many shots off the lead they will still show every shot he plays and start frothing when he hits a good one.

  • Some guy called Harry Ellis saving Sergio from the ultimate Hero to Zero - though he can make things marginally better with a birdie at 18.

  • @kiwipie said in 2018 masters:

And it is the worst case scenario - still he'll be going out early in Round 3 so should be out of the way by the time the leaders are on.

Love the Masters for the way that the Leader board is so unpredictable. Not many courses where players can make birdies rapidly and lose shots rapidly as well - the same player can feasibly shoot a 71 with an eagle, 5 birdies, a bogey, double bogey and triple bogey.

Lots of big guns close by this time, a whole bunch of Major winners nestling behind the 2 leaders.

  • And possibly the most unpopular player in the world of golf takes his first major - rejoice!

Reed by a shot from Fowler by a shot from Spieth. Spieth with the final day surge but dropped a shot at the last for a 64. Rory fizzed again.

    Reed = Green Jacket Potato

Sort of a let down day wasn't it? Speith making a huge charge, and then Fowler having a crack sort of gave it something. But Rory falling in a heap left fat boy not having to do anything but hang on. The whole tournament seems a bit of a fizzer.

I like it that a pie man can win the Masters! I wonder what his victory meal will be? Pies and a couple of pints I imagine
