England v Australia

  • England squad announced with a few changes but not necessarily surprises.

    England squad to face Australia:

Forwards: Charlie Ewels, Jamie George, Dylan Hartley, Alec Hepburn, Ted Hill, Nathan Hughes, Maro Itoje, Courtney Lawes, Ben Moon, Brad Shields, Kyle Sinckler, Elliott Stooke, Sam Underhill, Harry Williams, Mark Wilson.

Backs: Chris Ashton, Joe Cokanasiga, Elliot Daly, Owen Farrell, George Ford, Piers Francis, Jonny May, Jack Nowell, Henry Slade, Ben Te'o, Manu Tuilagi, Richard Wigglesworth, Ben Youngs.

Danny Care paying the price for a substantially below par performance against the Japs and not really a surprise. It's just a shame Robson has been injured as he offers something different at 9. Wigglesworth is not the answer IMO. Mercer and Lozowski also jettisoned with neither of them showing what they might have been picked for. Whether or not Mercer would have survived if Nathan Hughes was still suspended is unknown. Tuilagi in but that was always going to happen. It will be interesting to see how Eddie manages him back into the team. Starter or finisher?

  • @catogrande that's interesting, I drifted off in the second half but I thought Lozowski looked quite promising. Tough defender and seemed to have good feet. Different to much else for England at 12.

  • @bones He's been good for England when he's had a chance and has been playing well for Saracens, however he is behind Farrell in both squads and may have to move to make his mark. Against Japan I felt he didn't show the composure that was expected and perhaps tried to do too much with the limited ball he received. When Farrell came on at 12 he really took the sting out of the opposition and as much as anyone did, made the difference.

It is hard on Lozowski who had about five pieces of possession but he also missed that first up tackle to let the Jap 12 in for the first try, which was poor. He was good v Argentina on the 2017 tour but hasn't had the opportunity to cement his place. Maybe one for the future or maybe gone and forgotten.

Well if we're going to play that game, my guess for the Wales v SA game is Cuthbert at inside centre. Gatland likes the big boys.

Can you see Eddie picking a different backline from mine?

I wouldn't be altogether surprised to see a midfield of Ford, Farrell and Tuilagi. In any event as regards the backs it will be the midfield which will be taxing Eddie's mind. Farrell made a big difference on Saturday playing at 12 and Ford on the whole played OK. Neither T'eo or Slade has set the world alight so far ( not alone in that respect), so neither IMO can feel safe. Spoiled for choice on the wing, even more so once Watson comes back, but yes I would pick Ashton and May. I agree that Nowell needs to be in the mix as he can cover 15.

    Except....

"Israel Folau and Bernard Foley are still recovering from a stomach bug that cropped up at the end of last week," said an Australia spokesman.

  • On form, this should be a blood bath, and end what has just been a horror year (3 years) for the Wallabies on another down note.

  • And half the team have been suzied

  • Was the Homophobe's complete lack of pace last week down to the stomach bug of just the fact he's actually a slow poke these days?

  • @nepia I have seen him being run down before, don't think he has ever had the top end pace that other top class wingers have, as he has always relied on his acceleration, step and leap. Tho seemed very pedestrian on that one, so might have had something to do with the bug too.

  • Jack Nowell out now. Hammy damaged in training. (Common theme, training injuries). Likely see Cokanasiga step up. Left field alternative, Brown to come back at 15 with Daley reverting to the wing. Depth getting tested now.

  • TBF wing is one area that we can take a few injuries without too much of a drop off. Big opportunity for Cokanasiga, who'll surely come in.

Daly also needs a performance at FB. Hasn't really looked at home there yet. Far less depth there and Brown would look a good shout to come back in for the 6N unless he really nails it down. I'd actually rather see him at 13 than Slade, but Eddie's shown very little inclination on that front.

  • England starting XV:

15 Elliot Daly (Wasps, 24 caps), 14. Joe Cokanasiga (Bath Rugby, 1 cap), 13. Henry Slade (Exeter Chiefs, 16 caps), 12. Ben Te’o (Worcester Warriors, 15 caps), 11. Jonny May (Leicester Tigers, 39 caps), 10. Owen Farrell (Saracens, 64 caps) co-captain, 9. Ben Youngs (Leicester Tigers, 79 caps),
1 Ben Moon (Exeter Chiefs, 3 caps), 2. Jamie George (Saracens, 31 caps), 3. Kyle Sinckler (Harlequins, 16 caps), 4. Maro Itoje (Saracens, 25 caps), 5. Nathan Hughes (Wasps, 17 caps), 21. Richard Wigglesworth (Saracens, 32 caps), 22. George Ford (Leicester Tigers, 50 caps), 23. Manu Tuilagi (Leicester Tigers, 26 caps).

  • @stargazer Given injury, form and availability I'm quite pleased with that run on side. The bench slightly less so. Wigglesworth is there as Hobson's choice now that Care is out of favour but with Tuilagi there we really have no cover at wing or FB.

  • Oz 24 not named yet?

I doubt Suzie has got to them. I can't see any advantage in nobbling this team to make them worse than they already are.

  • Actually, this could go either way if the Aussies are fit & well.

If England give them the early ride they gave to Japan, then it could make for an interesting afternoon.

  • That 6-2 bench split always looks risky. Needs another back (24th man)

  • Wallabies are going to wear their indigenous jersey and their one indigineous player Beale gets dropped.

  • @kiwimurph so he can really appreciate how cool it looks from the stands!!

6-1 in reality as Phipps hardly plays. 😉

    5-1, Hanigan too

Foley at 12, really? It was so successful against Italy

Anyone know why? I can't be bothered looking, but he is one of their classiest players. Done something wrong off field again?

  • @snowy I didn't see the Italy match but he had an absolute nightmare game against Wales the week prior. His recent form has been really poor.

  • @kiwimurph said in England v Australia:

Thanks. Have only watched bits of those matches. Aussies really only have a couple of game breakers so would have tried to play him back into form I would have thought. You don't get better by not playing as a general rule, but confidence does help too.

  • Beale is one of the players who may just need a good break after playing an awful lot of minutes this year. Seventh overall in playing minutes in SR. In Aussie, only Foley played more SR.

For comparison, the top 10 of minutes played in SR:

    Jantjies (LIO): 1520
    Mostert (LIO): 1520
    A Coetzee (LIO): 1485
    Bridge (CRU): 1437
    Foley (WAR): 1418
    K Smith (LIO): 1367
    Beale (WAR): 1353
    Todd (CRU): 1350
    Alaimalo (CHI): 1344
    Rona (WAR): 13 38

  • that is a very "what the fuck?" wallaby team.

  • Finally Toomua gets a chance to show he can direct a team around the park and he's been given the powerhouse Foley outside of him to hit it up...

  • Pocock out of the 23.

Wallabies superstar David Pocock will miss this weekend's Test against England, forced out of the team with a neck injury.

The no. 8 had a last-minute run on Friday morning in London but failed that test and ultimately Australia opted to rule him out.

Pocock has had neck issues all season and it was a similar injury that forced him out of the Wallabies clash with South Africa in Brisbane in September.

This latest aggravation came from a hit in the Wallabies' 26-7 win over Italy last weekend in Padova.

While the Wallabies are yet to confirm a replacement, it had been expected Pete Samu would replace Pocock in the back row, the third time in his debut season that he has been drafted into the starting side to replace either Pocock or captain Michael Hooper.

Interestingly, Pocock's withdrawal could open the door for Kurtley Beale to return to the team after being initially left out of the team in a 6-2 bench.

  • Wallabies stars Kurtley Beale and Adam Ashley-Cooper were not eligible for selection in Saturday’s Test against England after breaking team protocol following the Wales match in Cardiff a fortnight ago.

A Wallabies spokesperson confirmed Beale and Ashley-Cooper, two of senior figures in the team, were not considered for selection because they invited three women back to their hotel in Newport, just out of Cardiff, on the night of Australia’s 9-6 loss to Wales.

Adam Ashley-Cooper and Kurtley Beale were not eligible for selection in this weekend's Test against England after breaking team protocol.

It has emerged one of the women was Ashley-Cooper’s sister-in-law. The others are believed to be her friends.

The women were out of the hotel by 10.30pm but Wallabies team rules state guests are not allowed in players' rooms.

Initially Cheika wanted to keep the issue under wraps, and that was no more evident than his confusing explanation as to why Beale was not included in Wallabies’ matchday 23 to take on England.

Cheika became aware of the issue on Monday, some nine days after the women were brought back to the hotel.

The pair were sanctioned after the leadership group involving Michael Hooper, David Pocock, Allan Alaalatoa, Samu Kerevi and Nick Phipps decided to alert the Wallabies coach about what had happened.

Beale was not even called up as a replacement player after David Pocock was ruled out. Pete Samu will now slot into the No.8 position, with Marika Koroibete to join spare backs Nick Phipps and Sefa Naivalu on a 5-3 bench.

  • @daffy-jaffy Whilst team protocols may have been broken, this sounds as though it is something that needed to be dealt with lightly and in house.
