I'm loathe to post this as I know this thread will be ruined by certain posters but so be it.

I think it's really neat she is visiting and I knew nothing about who she was but instantly recognised the photograph because of Forest Gump movie (which I am assuming this is the reference point they tried to touch on)

Those people must have had the thickest of souls to brave that sort of thing.

I'd love to listen to her view of that point in time. (Rather than read a link that someone will undoubtedly post)

That is tremendous courage for someone so young. I'd like to think there are people ashamed of themselves in that photo, but I suspect that's unlikely.

          Hopefully she outlived them all

Seems a fascinating individual. Some links below.

It's incredible the overt and brutal racism, particularly in the South. Puts our challenges in some perspective at times; we are a long way from perfect, but we are also a long way from where that was

@Hooroo on a similar note and you being pex Air Force this might interest you. The book is superb , I hope the movie is as good . It’s hard to get your head around being able to fly fighters off an air craft carrier and then bring told you can’t be served in a bar because you’re black

Certainly was incredible scenes, amazing what was so accepted only 50 years ago and how much things have progressed since. I wouldn't be surprised to see that those photoed had changed their views, will have been a lot of mob mentality at the time and prior to desegregation it would have been easy to remain stuck in ones bubble not ever having to challenge long held stereotypes.

Jessie Owens probably got more love from the crowd in Nazi Germany than he did at home.

Spoke to an old acquaintance of my mum who found a black soldier hiding under their water tank during WW2. Poor bugger was terrified of some wannabe Klukkers giving him a hiding. I'm not sure if this is true, but I heard black soldiers were only allowed on one side of the Brisbane river.

I think in the pacific they didn’t have black combat soldiers they were all drivers, cooks etc .

Dad said he saw a mp give a black soldier a hiding with his baton for returning a greeting from a white chick when they had a base in Masterton during the war .
