I'm not quite that extreme but Wayne Barnes ruined rugby for me in some ways.
I'm not convinced that it was all above board either.Substitute Wayne Barnes for Bryce Lawrence in a certain QF in 2011 and we're rowing the same boat.
Honest question:
Have you ever seen a rugby match where a team only gave away 2 penalties?

In a time when penalties were the order of the day.
In fairness to Wayne-O, I don't think it was underhanded; I think he (and Bryce for that matter) just bottled it on the big stage and swallowed their whistle.
Personally, my rugby passion dropped back for a few years - I think due to poor media (ALL BLACK THUGS) and then exacerbated by reality distortion fields around some fans (Lions fans redefining offside I'm looking at you). I dunno, it's just felt like the supporters have tended to go more divisive and Wendyball than classic rugby fan.
Still a bunch of GCs around, but drowned out sometimes by fluffybunny muppets.

I'm not quite that extreme but Wayne Barnes ruined rugby for me in some ways. I had tickets to the semi and didn't even sell them. There were two empty seats in Paris.
I at least sold my SF and finals tickets for a profit, so that lessened the pain a little, but only a little bit.
I was very tempted to say something to a smiling O'Brien outside Stade de France before the SF after his comments but thought better of it.

I have some quite specific words that I would have used, and then said "pardon my French". Might well have been rubbing my knuckles too.

You're probably correct.
Barnes should never have been there though and Paddy has to take responsibility for that - and his stupid comments afterwards. You really don't want to travel half way around the world, spend thousands of dollars and have the local under 10's bloke ref a match in front of what was a very vocal French (home) crowd.

My view on that is a little slanted. My ex neighbours brother's name was Bryce Lawrence (not the referee). The old bloke (70+) received death threat calls in the middle of the night from SA fans going off their head. He died not long after, was going to happen anyway but pretty f'd up.
Probably what stops me from giving Wayne a call even now.

I could call Cardiff many things, but French is not one of them!
Were you there? It was seriously French.

@ACT-Crusader Glad I'm not the only one. I never watched the 1991, 1999 and 2003 finals. I only watched the 2007 RWC final under sufferance, in Paris no less, but I fuckin' hated it.
I’m the same except I watched the 2003 not the 2007 , got invited to a barbecue World Cup party that was mostly full of afl fans who had become overnight wallabies supporters. My hate for the wallabies probably peaked around then. 4 more years etc .
Never thought I would be happy to see England win a WC but I was .

Was there with son and dad. He still tells the story, around the end, of a French chap next to us jumping up and down excitedly and a Kiwi chick in the row behind yelling, 'Sit down you French cnut', which proved efective.
Was risable about midnight when I saw the forward pass on the tape.
Couldn't sleep until I realised our destiny was to win Cup again at home.

It was probably 40% French, 80% French supporters. I’ve never forgiven the Irish.

There were stories here afterwards about the Irish fans . None of them good .

Wow. That's seriously messed up and uncalled for. Even such a call to the ref Bryce would be just completely f'd up.
Being pissed off is one thing. Making phone calls like that is just wrong.
