  • @ACT-Crusader Quite fitting that the Sith's main colour was red

  • Interesting that @ACT-Crusader chose whiny bitch prequel Anakin over Darth Vader to represent the Cantab gang. By interesting I mean fitting.

  • @canefan and that they were Dicks 😉

    Or even Darth Maul

Anakin gets the girl and it was Anakin, not Vader that brought balance, which as you know we bring balance to the rugby world (when we’re winning that is).

  • After a few test rides, bought myself a nice new eScooter today - can manage Pirie Street incline without missing a beat . Looking forward to terrorising the young whippersnapper skateboarders once I finish attaching the scythe blades to the wheel hubs - going all Eagle of The Ninth theme this year

  • So much for talk of things been quiet work wise with the lockdowns etc. Full on here, counting down to the Xmas break now. Couple months to go thank fuck, I know we already have had a large break this year but a month off over Xmas/summer will be like no other I think. Can’t wait.
Feels weird saying I need the break but really do..

@Snowy you better get your door order in soon...

  • @JC That's exactly the one I was after.

@JC That's exactly the one I was after.

You don’t have that one already for your cellar?

  • @Virgil No, but I did like this one last year:

    https://craggyrange.com/cellar-door/

  • @Snowy Spooky. Going there for dinner tonight.

  • @JC said in Lockdown Check In:

@Snowy Spooky. Going there for dinner tonight.

And I know where you are...
    Enjoy.

Actually I know that you will (and probably been before) but it is good.

  • @Snowy Yeah we head there about once a month or so. We used to rotate with Elephant Hill, but that is no more, sadly

    Elephant Hill closed due Covid?

    That was great too. Bummer.

  • @Snowy Yeah the restaurant is closed for good. My bro and I were just saying we should be doing a tour of all the remaining restaurants to make sure they’re still up to standard. So Black Barn next weekend.

  • @JC Black barn. Nice.

I think that is where we did a plant based diet cooking course (actually the wife did, I was just in the vicinity drinking).

They have accommodation too don't they? Stayed at Cape Kidnappers a few years ago, really great but expensive, so an alternative would be good for our next visit.

  • @Snowy Yep, they’ve got a number of properties in the immediate area for hire. They range from expensive to eye-watering. They’re all lovely.

That sucks! I loved Elephant Hill.

Bet that was right up your street!

  • @Virgil said in Lockdown Check In:

Yessss!! I've started my Christmas shopping already, love it. Can't wait to cover my house in glitter and lights!

  • @Nepia They made the decision to close very early in lockdown. Need overseas tourists to make their business model work. Unsupportable if relying solely on domestic diners Shame.

I was able to get there one last time just before Covid and the Bay is still rich in dining options.

  • @dogmeat Unfortunately there isn’t a decent Chinese restaurant of takeaway in the Bay though. All mediocre at best.

TBH now I think about it we aren’t very well served by good single cuisine restaurants of any type, apart from maybe Japanese.

  • @JC The Vietnamese cafe in Hastings St is good although its a stretch to call it a restaurant. If it had the little blue plastic chairs it would be very authentic.

Enjoyed Sai when I was down in July although it was more Thai Fusion than traditional and is a bit up itself.

IMO you have two very good Indians in Rasoi and Indigo and the Malay ON marine Parade - can't remember the name but very twee decor It's practically next door to The Dome which is where we were staying - did a good lunch.

Nothing else I can think of and I do agree I have has some shocking ethnic meals in Napier, but for its size you are incredibly fortunate. Hope more don't go the way that Elephant Hill has although when I was last down the place was pumping

  • @dogmeat @JC have been pointed towards Viet Kitchen in Auckland for good Vietnamese (by some Vietnamese friends of ours).https://vietkitchen.co.nz/

Any other recommendations for great food welcomed!

  • @nzzp

Vietkitchen is really good - eaten there many times. Since we came out of first lockdown into Level 2 we decided that we would do a different Vietnamese restaurant every weekend on the basis that if we can't go there this week we will bring it to us.

Only missed two weekends each time we were up in Russell as they don't have Vietnamese and I couldn't be arsed cooking. Even had it in Hamilton and Napier. Off to Queenstown on Saturday for 5 nights so will have to try out the local. Probably for a lunch as there are too many great dining options in QT area.

Sounds great. Love a nice bowl of pho

  • @dogmeat thanks. I have been pointed at the spicy beef stew.

    anything else we should order?

  • @nzzp I haven't had anything that was a disappointment. It would be one of the best in Auckland. We will travel over from the Shore especially. They're South Vietnamese so use more herbs than many Akl restaurants who might just through in a bit of coriander and garden mint. They also use the right cuts of meat so tripe and tendon as well as brisket.

They have a weekly special which is worth asking about. Often more adventurous. The pho is very good as is the bun cha, bun bo hue and banh xeo. They also do excellent Vietnamese coffee.

Friendly staff. Seem to remember us which is a nice welcome. Never been crowded. Plenty of Asian diners.

    I'm sure you'll enjoy.

  • @JC we went to a little Malaysian cafe, Faith Hope Love (so asian) on Marine Parade a few months back. Perfectly passable food and friendly staff. And an Indonesian joint which was okay too

  • @canefan careful, they kill you for that shit.

I thought it looked like a joke. Almost. 😀

  • @canefan Faith Hope Love - that's the one I meant.

I've been to the Indonesian but found it poor. Apparently the Dutch guy that had it for over a decade sold it and opened a Filipino Restaurant in the Westshore pub. Never made it there and I see it is now a generic "Asian"

Agreed Rasoi is good, really top class ingredients. The railway curry is top notch. Indigo OK too with the whisky collection from God. But I do miss the dreadfully decored cheap and cheerful curry houses from the UK. When I want a curry I don't care about anything else except how it tastes.

Piku in Joll Rd in Havelock North is a good Japanese robatayaki in the mould of ROKA in London. Recommend. Don't go to the attached bar next door, it's a soulless parody of a Japanese bar.

Malo in Porters Hotel (also Havelock North) is pretty good too.

  • @JC Thanks for the recommendations. We do tend to stick around Napier when we are down for just a weekend but we generally add on a day to Deco weekend so might give it a try next Feb.

Down in the Bay next week for work but timing of meetings will preclude anything more than a sandwich in Camberley

    Camberly? You poor bastard.

Although, hangi takeaways across form the hospital are a good bet if they’re open (and still exist).

  • @Nepia Handi Hangi? Yep still there. There’s a donut place next door to it now that basically sells a heart attack with a hole in the middle. As you can imagine in the ‘stings it sells out by about 8:30 in the morning.
