Pick Your (or any) High Schools' All-Time Greatest XV

  • Another team selection thread in lieu of any legit sports action!

Some schools such as CBHS and several Auckland schools will have an embarrassment of riches and can probably field a XV composed entirely of All Blacks, but I'm sure there'll be some interesting line-ups.

Where a guy went to two High Schools - and I'm thinking of the likes of Richie Mo'unga (Riccarton HS, St Andrews College) and Siate Tokolahi (Sacred Heart, St Bedes College) - I'm going to rule that they can qualify for both, as it's too hard to define which one should take preference.

I need a hooker, so by all means jump in:

    St Bedes College

    15 Kevin Stuart (NZ)
    14 Bill Meates (NZ)
    11 Solomon Alaimalo (SR)
    13 Kieran Keane (NZ)
    12 Cameron McIntyre (SR)
    10 Jon Preston (NZ)
    9 Jamie Nutbrown (SR)
    8 Elliot Dixon (NZ)
7 James Lentjes (SR) / Johnny Leo'o (SR) / Billy Harmon (SR) / Jonathon Poff (SR)
6 Michael Leitch (Japan) / Josh Navidi (Wales)
5 Jake Burns (NZ) / Luke Thompson (Japan) / Kevin Meates (NZ) / Will Tucker (NPC)
4 Andy Earl (NZ) / Vance Stewart (NZ) / James Tucker (SR)
3 Patrick Rhind (NZ) / Siate Tokolahi (SR)
    2
1 Jules le Lievre (NZ) / Chris Earl (NPC) / Tristan Moran (SR)

  • Glen Jackson
Graeme Aldridge played 1st XV too

    End

  • The 2 strongest teams will be AGS and CBHS. Martin Crowe even played in AGS's 1st XV.

  • The Earl brothers both went to Hawarden DHS before St Bedes (as did Elliot Dixon's dad).

  • Slim pickings for Hastings Boys, here's the ABs I know about (3 big names in Robertson, Davis and Kronfeld but not many others) and Super players off the top of my head.

    Roger Randle
    Bruce Robertson
    Bill Davis
Bob Burgess (1970s AB who spent a year at Hastings Boys)
    Danny Lee/Alby Mathewson
    Hubert McLean (1930s AB)
    Josh Kronfeld
    Hika Elliot.

    Super Rugby

    Ben Tamiefuna
    Karl Lowe
    Marino Mikaele-Tu'u
    Tone Kopalani
    Sam Anderson-Heather
    Folau Fakatava
    Devon Flanders
    Danny Toala

  • CBHS, without delving into any archives:

    15 C Slade / W Jordan
    14 S Hamilton
    11 D Gibson
    13 A Leinert-Brown / N Mauger
    12 A Mauger
    10 D Carter / A Mehrtens
    9 Scott Hansen
    8 N Manu
    7 M Todd
    6 A Thompson
    5 L Romano
    4 B Retallick
    3 O Franks
    2 A Dixon
    1 B Franks / D Hewett / R Loe

Someone already did Nelson College last year. If the teams actually played tomorrow, this would be reasonably competitive! I suspect there's a few old time ABs missing.

  • @Chris-B Handy side. Marfell would be a pretty small lock though wouldn't he?

  • @shark Yeah - he mainly played No. 8 at provincial level as I recall.

I wonder when Luke Romano left Nelson - be handy if he was a third former at Nelson College! ๐Ÿ™‚

Edit: I see in the notes below the team a requirement that you had to have played for the NC first XV - which ruled out some interesting candidates. Maybe Simon Mannering could play lock! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • The Lindisfarne Factory:
Hard to get into the back three

    Timu Fullback
    Dagg Wing
    Mason Emerson - Wing
    Bridge - Center
    2nd 5 - Mick Duncan (2 Tests 1971)
    Tiaan Falcon - 1st 5
Half Back - Hamish Natush (can't spell his name pretty sure he made NZ 17's or NZ schools before breaking his neck)
    Taine Randell - 8
    Hugh Renton - 7
    Sam Goodwin - 6
    I will reluctantly cover 5
    Parsons - 4
    Campbell Johnstone - Prop
    Tim Cadwallader (Hooker)
    Eddie Coombs - Prop

    Reserves: Richard Kineer 1st 5

  • Without digging into the past records for NPC players.

    Hamilton BHS

15 Jared Payne (Ireland)/Jack Tuck (NZ)/Daryl Halligan (RL)
    14 Sean Maitland (Scotland)/Henry Speight (Aust)/Declan O'Donnell (SR)
13 Scott McLeod (NZ)/Bert Cooke (NZ)/Save Tukola (SR)
    12 Lachie Cameron (NZ)/Rhys Ellison (NZM)/Dwayne Sweeney (NZM)/Jackson Willison (NZM)/Quinn Tupaea (SR)/Orbyn Leger (SR)
11 Sevu Reece (NZ)/Emoni Narawa (SR)
10 Bryn Gatland (SR)/Trent Renata (SR)
    9 Tawera Kerr-Barlow (NZ)/Kevin Greene (NZ)
8 Warren Gatland (NZ)/Jahrome Brown (SR Brumbies)
    7 Hugh Blake (Scotland)
    6 Tom Coventry (NPC)
5 Tiwini Hemi (NZM)/Josh Lord (SR)
    4 Richard Coventry (SR)
    3 ???
2 Ron Hemi (NZ)/Aled de Malmanche (NZ)
1 Toby Smith (Aust)/Ayden Johnstone (SR)/Fraser Armstrong (SR)

I have selected Gats at no.8 as that is where he played schoolboy rugby.

Plenty of depth in the outside backs but lacking in some positions in the forwards.

  • @Nepia Tivani Fomai would slide in there somewhere surely. Magpies/Samoa and also responsible for the hardest I've ever been tackled in my life.
Rosenberg might get a mention. And Alex Tulou has been playing in France for the last decade in the Top League and was at one stage in the French wider training squad.

Im only just hearing about Corona Virus now because he tackled me so hard at school he knocked me back a few months in time.

  • @Magpie_in_aus Alex Tulou was the one I couldnโ€™t think of his name. Rosenberg didnโ€™t really kick on.

Imagine how much better this team would have been without Lindersfarne and itโ€™s chequebook pinching he likes of Randell and Dagg. ๐Ÿ˜

  • @Nepia Taine lived closer to Te Aute....
Dagg wouldn't have made it past 5th form if he went to HBHS....although he probably could have joined the 'sports academy' and done 4th-year 5th form with a few of the others.

Anyway, both were academics (well in Taines case he actually was) and only found out they had sporting talent once it was nurtured at the farne'.

  • @Nepia Did Gordon Falcon go to Lindisfarne as well?

  • @JK

Can we do a Westlake team, or will we need Rosmini as well?

Taine was from Flaxmere, which is not closer to TA and he definitely went to Lindersfarne on a sporting scholarship (along with Christian Makarere at the same time).

    Yep on Gordon Falcon.

Not clued up enough to do either mate.

Do they have to be students or can they be teachers as well?

  • @Tim said in Pick Your (or any) High Schools' All-Time Greatest XV:

    @JK

    1. Ron Williams
    2. Liam Barry (teacher only?? think he went to Rosmini)
    3. Dillon Hunt
    4. Frano Botica
    5. Luke McAlister
    6. Nick Evans

Not sure who else - have trawl the north harbour side I guess. Our basketball team would be a whole lot better - prob best starting 5 in the country

  • @JK With a name like Barry - ya think ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • @JK Yeah Barry went to Rosmini, as did Boric.

Michael Little in the midfield? Mike Harris is another of our 10s.

  • If you are including Rosmini alumni then add Larsen, Wulf and G Dowd.

  • @Bovidae Didn't Tom Coventry play for the Crusaders in 1996? You could bump him up from NPC to SR, maybe.

  • @Bovidae said in Pick Your (or any) High Schools' All-Time Greatest XV:

    Auckland Grammar.

    Take your pick...

    http://stats.allblacks.com/asp/schoollist.asp?sl_id=Auckland Grammar&stats_id=71

Come on, can't you put this rag-tag mob of no-hopers into a XV?? ๐Ÿ™‚

  • @shark I thought he might have played for the Chiefs too, but couldn't find any definitive proof. Deon Muir did play for the Crusaders in 1996.

Edit: It looks like Coventry's provincial career ended before SR started.

  • Napier Boys

    1 Pouri Rakete-Stones
    2 Tyrone Thompson (added)
    3 Greg Somerville
    4 Bryn Evans
    5 Chris England (added)
    6 Colin Bourke (added)
    7 Gareth Evans
    8 Richard Turner
    9 Brad Weber
    10 Ihaia West
    11 Zac Guildford
    12 Sam McNicol
    13 Richard Buckman
    14 Karne Hesketh (added)
    15 Caleb Makene

    Bench:
    16 Glen Rolls
    21 Stu Forster
    22 Dan Waenga
    23 Bailyn Sullivan

    I'm sure I missed a few ...

  • @Stargazer Glen Rolls was nz 17's hooker then went and played for Spain 7's and 15's as a loosely. Those twins that went to wellington Thompson?, Dan Waenga, Dan Kirkpatrick, Glen Horton, Colin Bourke

  • Shitty old Kamo High. There's a few gaps to fill

I think this is all the players that went on to play Super Rugby? There was a good period in the early to mid 90's

1 Con Barrell (I think he went there? Before my time..)
    2 Scott Linklater
    3
    4 Ian Jones
    5
    6
    7 Justin Collins
    8
    9
    10 David Holwell
    11
    12 Nick Collins
    13 Hayden Taylor
    14
    15 Todd Miller

  • @Duluth yeah I dont think Joe Ross or Brad MIller made super level, only provincial?

  • @Magpie_in_aus Yeah, I thought about the Thompson twins, but it's an all time greatest thread, so I wondered whether there are more Napier Old Boys who've actually played for the ABs, MABs, SR, U20 and NPC (in that order), before looking at talented youngsters. As Tyrone Thompson would, no doubt, have made the U20s this year, I'll put at 2.

Colin Bourke will have to take the 6 jersey, although I have to admit I was tempted to give it to Trent Boswell-Wakefield.

Rolls (16) and Waenga (22) get a spot on the bench.

I'll amend the list in my previous post.

  • @Duluth I had assumed Todd Miller had went to CCNZ for some of his secondary school education like his uncles, but it appears not.

Con Barrell is another from Kamo.

  • @Stargazer Weber vs Forster?

  • @Bovidae said in Pick Your (or any) High Schools' All-Time Greatest XV:

I just edited my post to add Con Barrell

Todd was at Kamo but didn't play for the 1st xv. He opted to play club rugby instead

  • @Bovidae Ah, yes, another one. Because I can't remember ever seeing him play, he'll get the 21 jersey.

  • @Duluth Miller must have ended up in the Waikato to go to uni and has never left.

  • St Andrews College:

    15 Ben Blair
    14
    11 Telusa Veainu
    13
    12
    10 Richie Mo'unga
    9
    8 Alex Wylie
    7
    6
    5 Alby Anderson
    4 Mark Abbott
    3 Chris King
    2
1 Tim Perry / Harry Allan

  • @Duluth think Holwell played mostly for MN too...forgt about Con, did Jason Barrell make super rugby?

  • @taniwharugby

He did play SR.. I assume he went to Kamo too

Add in a few Northland reps and the Kamo side isn't too bad

  • @Duluth yeah I think Dooley played some of the inter-school stuff, but for Saturday comps I think he played for MN.
