Buying a car

@mariner4life I feel your pain. Really shitty year, even worse for your industry (and what used to be mine).

meh, I'm sort of over it now. or at least numb to it. Just need to focus on the fact there is nothing we can do. Just hope to be here at the end.

I'm seriously considering buying a new car. That'll make me feel better

  • @mariner4life Car sales here are booming during the pandemic.

here too. my mate is the Dealer Principle at the biggest dealership in the City, and he was fucking stressed in April. Now? Not so much

I thought about doing that too. Unfortunately the wife thinks that 5 is enough, and she would kill me, so I would be another covid death.

    Instead I bought a relocatable 1930s house...

my little kia rio is 7 years old, and starting to battle. I am loath to put any money in to it as it's worth absolutely nothing

also i need a camping vehicle

I hear this. I have a Commodore that has just clicked over 330,000ks and it has done me well (although I would never have purchased another Commodore if they were still making them)

I test drove a new car and we nearly got it but I convinced Mrs Hooroo I should run my car into ground so to speak.

I think I have to bite the bullet soon though and buy one. Just no idea what I should get. I want a Bentley Continental GT. I'd also like a private jet but I can afford neither!

mine hasn't done anywhere near that. But it was a cheap car, and has spent most of its life parked in the tropical sun.

My current car is a 2016 Commodore (sports wagon) think the following year was the last of that shape before they bought out that awful European looking thing. Not surprised it was the end of the road (pun intended) for Holden.
I’d always been a Japper car owner but have loved owning a Holden ( current car is my 2nd now) have had it 3 years with no issues, touch wood. Gas hasn’t been too much of an issue. I’ve managed to get it down from 9.3 L per 100km to 8.9 L. Quite proud of that ( for some sad reason)

Oh and it’s black, black cars are cool

Yeah mine is a Black GTR and when I got it I was happy but quickly could see how clunky they did everything. No finesse inside. I prefer the interior of Fords which I drive for work in the comparable cars.

Favourite part of the car is leg room! I'm just shy of 6'3" and it's the first car I have owned that I didn't need the seat all the way back

  • @mariner4life mine is an almost 5yr old Mitsi Outlander with about 55k on it. I have picked up some really big clients locally, too, which means I dont need to do as much driving to visit clients anymore

@Mokey my guess is that you taught English in Asia is where @Snowy is coming from? Unless I am making that part up too 🤔

  • @Virgil said in Lockdown Check In:

I have a 14 year old black car and short of having staff to detail it everyday, I would never buy another black car. They stay amazing for about 5.3 seconds. Then look dirty.

They look great for about 30 seconds after a car wash.....

  • yeah mine is a black car too...

  • @Mokey said in Lockdown Check In:

    @Snowy School teacher?

I might have that completely wrong, but didn't you teach in Taiwan?

  • mine is electric blue. the paint flaked and fell of last year, turns out it was a paint issue, and Kia paid to have the thing stripped back to bare metal and re-sprayed.

  • I must be a sucker for black cars, 3 of my last 4 have been black. They do look shit hot when freshly cleaned and polished. But yeah shame it only lasts 3.6 seconds.. it’s worse when you drive a rural road every day..

  • @Virgil or have had water restrictions for months. I too have a black car. It is thing of beauty when cleaned but at the moment it looks like shit inside and out.

Don’t talk abut the inside, I’ve given up keeping mine clean. When you have young kids it’s like pigs at a trough. Food, clothes, food, empty packets from food, hair ties and food. I always stare forward when I get into my car, I never look in the back seat.

  • @jegga isn't here so I'll say it.

    Hilux.

  • @Virgil

My boy puked - everywhere - in ours last week, right as we arrived at the beach.

    What. a. fucking. mess.

One week on and I'm happy that there is only a small hint of puke smell when you turn it on.

  • ..was going to suggest a thread just for Black Car owners but i guess this can do.

  • @Snowy Yup. But that was 20 years ago.

  • @Mokey said in Buying a car:

Pleased that I wasn’t imagining things, and I have been here 20 years like you I think?

  • @mariner4life

What are you thinking of getting?

  • I have a 2013 Subaru Legacy for sale if anyone wants it - fucking mint car, I loved it for the last 4 months, and I'll take it back to Sydney in 6mths if I can't get a decent price. It currently lives in Hamilton

But it's grey (is it cooler to say silver ?) so that rules most of you out

I'm partial to silver. I'll see how much is left in the kitty after I've finished the kitchen renos in my Dunedin rental... (answer: probably bugger all).

My friends Vauxhall Nova (No Va meaning no go in Spanish, not sure why it did't sell there) was known as the sick car. She was always a lazy slut and when her kid spilt milk she left it. Rancid milk smells worse than puke and we were able to verify this as the smell (some weeks later) made her other kid puke, which she also left. We caught No1 kid eating the remnants of a pork pie that he'd found on the floor at the back of the car and this finally prompted her to clean the thing out.

You could not sit in the car with the windows shut even then.

  • @gt12 said in Buying a car:

The next generation Isuzu D-Max comes out Monday and I am very keen. Sick looking truck, all the bells and whistles, heaps of grunt

  • @Snowy Bloody hell, don't remind me!

  • Mazda CX-5. I love it.

Picking a brand new car up off the lot was just like this except I’m much pastier and work paid for it, I didn’t steal it.

  • How do you guys buy cars down in Oz?

Everybody up here seems to use PCP. In which case you don't buy the car, but you essentially finance the (expected) depreciation. It seems an expensive way to buy a car to me, but then again, it does allow people to drive brand new cars for 250-300 per month.

Now obviously, if you are going into flash car territory, then things change somewhat. But you'll get a brand new golf for the above. That's pretty damn good.

    No, we're not drug dealers.

Are they planning to stay in Australia supporting new car sales? Lately, a few companies have been leaving or talking about it.

  • @MajorRage seems to be a lot of that about at the moment. I was fucking around online getting quotes and there were a heap like this. New 50-odd thousand utes for 750 a month.

    I prefer the traditional method

    well that's an interesting question

  • @mariner4life

I haven't seen anything about it, but it's something I'd be asking about. Those new Isuzus look pretty good.

Those poor bastards who have Honda and Holden franchises must be feeling pretty shit right now.

Given that Mazda Utes are basically Isuzus anyway, I wouldn't buy one of those either.
