Match Fit

  • Anyone else watch this on TV3??

I think it's going to be a really interesting and good program. I like the balance of humour and serious re health issues. Looks like they are addressing stuff across the board, fitness, diet, drink, mental health etc, especially in the Maori/Island cultures, which is great. Will definitely tune in next time.

I've recorded it, gonna see what it's like

  • @canefan one of the things they test for each ex AB is metabolic age compared to actual age. Some got a nasty shock. Others are in good nick.

  • Pita Alatini hasn't aged a day and looks like he could step into an AB jersey tomorrow. Troy Flavell is in fantastic nick too, especially compared to his best mate Cribb who has really gotten out of shape. In the day it'd be hard to separate those two as pure athletes but now ? absolutely no comparison. Goes to show the value of keeping functional and active.

Kees Meeuws is even more enormous as is Eroni Clarke and Piri Weepu. Loads of work for the fitness trainers for that bunch. I don't think they've missed too many feeds over the years.

The banter and laughs were top quality, some real characters and you could tell they were all thrilled to catch up with eachother again.

  • @MN5 you could tell he was chuffed to hear he had the metabolic age of 29! But kudos to Ted and Buck for testing as well.

  • Shows like this can actually be a life saver for some guys i reckon. I follow Piri on insta and he's doing work! But he also blew up pretty huge 😬

Did he what ? Shocking for a guy not yet 40.

Cracked me up when he asked if the machine had been calibrated right though haha.

  • @Paekakboyz honestly, I think this kind of thing, where older dudes can be real about fitness and health and mental health is gold. We always see shows about the 20 somethings and bodies aren't the same after 35 in terms of bouncing back at all. Much harder to lose weight, keep the rolls off from the gut etc.

For some of them I think injuries woulda made it tough to keep fit too.

I wonder if he's still a machine in the gym? I suspect he could still throw some big weights around.

  • but we saw what happened to Piri when he was in the AB's, so you can only imagine what would happen when he was no longer being driven by that black jersey and paid alot of money to keep fit(ish)

I've series linked it, so will watch it in a couple of weeks.

  • That was pretty entertaining and interesting. Bit of a shock for some of those guys when they did the metabolic ages.

Eroni Clarke is 7 years older than Sir Ted, I think.

    Some pretty funny stuff too.

Hey Ted, you'll be able to tell Raewyn she's sleeping with a younger man.

Ted: She won't believe this rubbish!

Pilates and Yoga are so good for the little stablisers. No coincidence that Flavell looked bloody nimble running out there when they were playing touch.

His haircut is still way too pretty boy for a former tight forward though.

Weepu looked like he didn't move from the couch after the 2011 final. Such a shame because he could have been one of the greats if he could have stayed away from the bakery.

Second best on the list of halfback/first-fives isn't bad for a league kid from Wainui!

John Preston number one right ♥

Who else ? the Postman always delivered.

Should have played a lot more tests.
Talking about postmen, Craig Innes was an actual postman.

And JK was an actual butcher's assistant. Those were the days

Shows like this can actually be a life saver for some guys i reckon. I follow Piri on insta and he's doing work! But he also blew up pretty huge 😬

Did he what ? Shocking for a guy not yet 40.

Cracked me up when he asked if the machine had been calibrated right though haha.

JK used to cut his fingers perving at chicks walking past the window so the legend says. Crap coach but a deadset legendary human in every other way !

Reds and Wallaby prop Dan Crowley didn't have his picture in game programs because he was an undercover cop at the time.

When I started collecting league cards they all had an occupation listed. I even recall Mick Hancock missing a game because of work commitments. Those were the days indeed.

He helped out in his Dad's shop in Onehunga. They were part of a chain of stores that my old man used to work for from memory - he knew them both anyway.

  • @Rancid-Schnitzel I think I remember heaps of the fowards were brickies - when the game was easier than work, but just a tad more violent (I hope!).

What about Ian Stevens - Petone, Wellington and the All Blacks?

Apparently his book is a fantastic read. I bet he has some great yarns.

Watched Matchfit last night too. Really enjoyed it and so did my son. Its gonna be interesting to see how these guys go.

Yeah the difference between Flavell and Cribb was a real eye opening. See Flavell a bit as he does pilates at one of the wifes studios but Cribb obviously hasnt been doing much other than taking it easy after all those injuries and operations

From the promos, it sounds like Cribb has had a pretty tough time of it - was living in his car for a while (I was only half watching and wondering who he was) - though that story is presumably going to be told in the later episodes.

    Before my time unfortunately.
