Allister Coetzee appointed as new Springbok coach

  • Allister Coetzee has been named as head coach of the Springboks for the next four years, ushering in an exciting new era for rugby in South Africa, said Mr Oregan Hoskins, president of SA Rugby.
The 52-year-old former Springbok assistant coach succeeds Heyneke Meyer at a time when a number of veterans of the 2007 Rugby World Cup triumph have gone into retirement, including three of last year’s four captains.
“Allister’s appointment marks the changing of the guard at the top of Springbok rugby and is an exciting new departure for SA Rugby,” said Mr Hoskins.

He doesn't really scare me. Played mostly forward oriented rugby with the Stormers even though he was largely successful.

Be interesting to see who he appoints as captain. Vermuelen is out because he plays overseas. Will probably be Etzebeth or Whitely.

  • He certainly has the resumé. Good luck to him.

Interesting observation to make about a coach

Time will tell if he can deal with the politics that often plagues the Springboks

  • heard a snippet of him on the radio saying he is excited by the prospect of getting to the 50% transformation threshold by 2019?

I suspect he wouldn't say that about Johan Ackermann who was also in the running.

  • Sounds like they've already kinda undermined him by not letting him pick the assistants he wanted?

    Good luck to him though.

    I wouldn't.

    Look at some comments:

"I am expecting us to score 1 try a season from here on. So exciting."
    "Worst nightmare confirmed."
"Worst kept secret ever. Sigh I had hoped for Johan Ackerman!! Now we have boring Stormers rugby for the next few years. I really hope he proves me wrong!!"
"Imagine how we feel. As soon as we get rid of the guy..."

Check out new assistant coach Wanky Stick's resume:
He was named in the Kings wider training squad for the 2013 Super Rugby season, but was subsequently released to the Vodacom Cup squad.[1]
He was named the Under-21 Assistant Coach in 2013.[2] He became the head coach of the Eastern Province U19 team and their Vodacom Cup team for 2014 and 2015, guiding the Under-19s to their first ever Under-19 Provincial Championship title in 2015.[3]
In December 2015, he was appointed as the backline coach of the Kings Super Rugby team for the 2016 Super Rugby season,[4] and joined the South Africa national rugby union team in the same capacity in April 2016.[5]

  • His Stormers side had some great backs, not that you would have known it from the turgid rugby they played.

Actually, i quite liked them for a while, they were brutal and effective up front, but they always underachieved because they couldn't score enough points.

Be interesting to see how he goes this year given the resources at his disposal

    that's his actual name????

    ....bloody hell

  • Presenting Mr Wanky Stick...........

Mzwandile Wanky Stick (born 5 October 1984 in Port Elizabeth) is a former South African rugby union player and currently an assistant coach for the South Africa national rugby union team.
He captained the South Africa sevens team during the 2008–09 IRB Sevens World Series, which saw the team win the series title for the first time. His favoured position was full-back. He came off the bench for a Southern Kings XV against British and Irish Lions during the 2009 tour to South Africa.

That is a seriously light coaching resume for an assistant coach of one of the powerhouses of world rugby.

I assume that he is a transformation appointment, but even so, he must have some incriminating photos or something ...

Wikipedia left the fact that he is black off his list of achievements. I'm surprised they couldn't scrape the barrel and find someone else who was black.

Ordinarily I hate it when people cast aspersions on appointments due to race or gender, but in this case it is just hard to fathom there could be any other reason for it.

I was only guessing that he is black?  Is he?

Hopefully he ends up being decent so skin colour isnt an issue.

  • Think how we reacted to Foster getting anywhere near the All Blacks. He's actually coached teams.

  • Still can't get over the guy's name.

The Springboks are officially being paid for practising with Mr Wanky Stick.

To be honest, more something you'd expect of the Wallabies.

  • Not too bothered with Stick's appointment. He must have done an alright job to do what he did with the EP U19 side. He can't go any worse then Ricardo Loubscher, and Allister Coetzee is a backline coach as well so not too stressed.
Can't say I was too happy about Coetzee's appointment either but who knows, maybe he realises it's time we develop. Maybe he realises that we are being left behind and actually need to play some rugby while entertaining crowds.
And while I'm not very enthusiastic about transformation because of the better players being left out unfairly, from what the guys in our 7s side have been doing I think they can offer a new dimension to Springbok rugby that the Afrikaans players just haven't managed up until now. Guys like Justin Geduld and Cheslin Kolbe may be small, but they play the ball better then any of the guys in the Springbok side last season.

  • Full Name: Mzwandile Wanky Stick
Nickname: Stokololo (named after a short SA drummer, name and band unknown)
Pretty disappointing nickname honestly.    Unless Stokolo is a SA term for your bell end.

I want to see Kolbe playing international rugby. Great player to watch.

  • All I want is for Andrew Mehrtens to be commentating the first game of the season the ABs and Boks meet.

  • Welcome to a transformed Bok Squad. With the recent dominance of NZ rugby, the already small pool of countries that are able to run with the AB's has gotten even smaller (Aus, Eng?) Transformation will come to affect your enjoyment of a AB v Bok test match shortly.

When Mehrts was a Rugby international, Wanky Stick was a key part of his pre-match preparation and relaxation:

  • Part of me wants to say such nepotism should see them cast into the rugby wilderness but then again after 2002 we probably should have been also. I guess all nations go through this from time to time.

  • At least his surname is Stick and not Stein.
How come his name doesn't come up "Willisy"?

  • I don't have a problem with Stick. Great 7s record, one of the highest try scorers for BlitzBokke, ex-captain, captain of a team to win a championship.  Coached at various junior levels.  This is basically where most Bok coaches started at u19/u21 level.  He is not going into head coach position.  I think it is exciting to have a ex-7s player as backline coach.  Will make a difference.

He should be playing in that USA start up league with a resume like that not coaching an international powerhouse.
Let's get Orene Ai'i coaching our backs instead of Wayne Smith.

  • Everyone knows it's a political appointment, seeing as most of our backs are older then Stick (who is only 31).
Coetzee will be pulling the strings. Him being a backs coach makes it less problematic.

  • Coetzee has a better scrapbook than PdV and he was pretty successful considering he was stark raving mad.
With the Bok coaching position I feel like as long as the selection and management is adequate than the Boks will always be formidable. Their playing strength sees to that.

I think Coetzee will make sure the players are in line and together.  Anybody who isn't contributing is going to get an extra session with the wanky stick, so that should be quite motivating.

The last time you beat us for multiple matches was with a coach of colour and complaints about him and transformation. We could be in the shit this year then.

  • I'm more concerned about the captain and team selection.
For me, give the captaincy to Frans Malherbe and if he goes well then we have a captain for the next 8 years.
