AB bolters thread

  • Not too long until le XV du poireau touch down in NZ.  No AB discussion is compete without a bolters thread.  By definition, there will be some names thrown about that seem a bit WTF-ish.  All part of the fun.  Without further ado

    Blues - Rieko Ioane (EOYT)
    Chiefs - Taleni Seu
    Canes - Reggie Goodes
    Saders - Scott Barrett
    Landers - Rob Thompson

  • Not sure if we will see too many bolters this year until the EOYT. Players may well be identified and called into camp for an assessment before being sent away with 'work ons'.
Those you mention are potentially likely to be part of that group as is Akira Ioane, D Mac, Lowe, Tu'angafasi, E Dixon.

Any 'bolter' this year will be someone they see as having great potential to step up quickly if required in areas we may be weak on in terms of depth.

  • Bryn Hall, Ihaia West, Ryan Tongia.

  • I don't think there will be any bolters.

  • Scott Barrett for me should be the real bolter,he has really impressed me

  • I think Blade Thomson is a quality player, but it will be tough for him to crack into the ABs though with all the other talent in the loose.

  • Luke Whitelock

  • Ardie Savea

  • Ardie Savea

    we're taking 3 opensides?

  • Luke Whitelock

Not a bolter, it's called destiny......

  • Kieron Reid, Sam Kane, Brydie Rettalick

  • we're taking 3 opensides?

Savea transcends some mere position. Other players might have a position, but Savea has evolved beyond such mundane trivialities. He simply plays 'The Savea'

  • Jordan Taufua

  • Todd Miller.

  • Ok if w'e're talking Ngatai, Moala, and Crotty not being bolters as they.ve all been capped before then....Ngani Laumape has looked good in a developing midfield
As I like the mongrel, I'd also like to see Liam Squire given a shot

  • Ngatai has been capped?

He came off the bench against Samoa.

    Missed that completely!

  • Possible calls :

Props : Tu'ungafasi (only for a training session IMO)
    Hookers : recall of Parsons
Locks : Barrett (too early for Seu)
Loose forwards : Taufua, Savea, Squire, Ioane (EOYT) (too early for Fifita and Gibson)
Midfield : None (too early for Laumape, Thompson and Tamanivalu, maybe Buckman for the EOYT if he is fit to play in the ITM Cup)
    Wingers : Lowe, Ioane (EOYT)
    FB : McKenzie

Parsons? I don't expect him back in black, unless Coles, Taylor, H Elliott, A Dixon and Coltman are all injured.

That guy as an AB ? you serious ????/

  • Missed that completely!

    Next suitcase?

  • That guy as an AB ? you serious ????/

Yes, definitely! There's nothing strange about the idea that Buckman could be an All Black. He was huge for the Highlanders last year and was in the NZ Barbarians squad for a good reason. Laumape and Thompson are well behind him in the queue (don't think they will be considered this year, if they will be at all). It's an incredible setback for him that he got seriously injured during that pre-season game against Racing92. Unfortunately, he's still about 4 months away from playing again.

  • That guy as an AB ? you serious ????/

This is the Fern. I've never known a player to have support from supposed rugby intellects quite like the Barracuda.

  • He's from Hawkes Bay. Of course he's going to be an AB, they're the bestest players ever

  • He's from Hawkes Bay. Of course he's going to be an AB, they're the bestest players ever

Cue an MN5 reminisce about Kronfeld or A N Other HB player from yesteryear...

  • He's from Hawkes Bay. Of course he's going to be an AB, they're the bestest players ever

God you Of Plenty boys are pissy ;), it wasn't even a HB fan who originally mentioned him.

  • It was inevitable though. Every selection thread inevitably turns to what HB players have or haven't been picked

 Now you're just talking out of your arse.

  • God you Of Plenty boys are pissy ;), it wasn't even a HB fan who originally mentioned him.

Next they'll be telling us "The Bay" refers to BOP, not HB. Sacrilegious.

  • The 'Cuda is the modern day Brendan Laney. I would bloody love to see him play some international footy.

  • When is the last time we actually had a bolter? You'd probably have to go back to Mitchell when random guys were called up left & right or even better Mains where literally all of Harbour, Waikato & Otago got a cap despite being awful.

No one capped this year won't have been flagged WAY in advance & made 5 teams of the week during the super comp. Guys who have been in the wider training group, mentioned as stand-bys or are the Super rugby top try scorer ain't bolters.

One of the great things about Hansen / Ted has been that they very rarely just select some guy from left field based on a hunch & then have to go "whoops!". tho in some ways I sort of miuss turning on the team announcement & going "Eric Rush is playing fucking where? Our backline is Little at 10, Bunce at 12 & Clarke at 13? Kirwan has been dropped for Marc Ellis? How many beers have I had?"

  • I'd say the last out and out bolter was Joe Moody when he first came into the team. Everyone went Joe whooooo.

  • Bird was picked solely on promise and a hunch. You could even argue that Coles jumped the queue. BBBR simply forced his way in.
If there was one selection that would surprise most but turn out to be a good one it could be Fifita.

  • I'd say the last out and out bolter was Joe Moody when he first came into the team. Everyone went Joe whooooo.

Thats true. There is more chance for props as no one really pays any attention to then during the Super season, and its often the guys who seemingly do nothing that are actually test candidates, because they aren't going 60m bumping guys off as they are buried in rucks & scumaging.

  • Agree SM, Moody was a genuine come from nowhere. He was a sometimes bench player not that long ago and then when he started to feature more in the Saders prop rotation all of a sudden he was wearing black.
I thought Tuipoluto was a bit of a bolter.

  • Moody came from nowhere. But it turned out to be a bloody good call by Steve and the lads.

  • Worst bolster. Joe McDonnell. I remember the kid look as surprised as everyone in the room and Mitchell wanking on about his "explosive power".

  • At the Dunedin club in 1990 Joe was playing 2nd five in the U19's

  • who was that Hawkes Bay and Hurricanes lock selected by henry, I didn't even know who he was.  I still wouldn't recognise him if I saw him.
