The Artist Formerly Known As ... RIP

  • Just heard that, didn't he have a tour planned too?
    RIP

  • On the way to work I heard Purple Rain played on 3 different stations, all in the space of 15 mins
Never met him in real life obviously but did see the wax version at Las Vegas some years back, tiny little dude. Don't think it would take much for a bug or virus to bring him down.

  • Prince is one of my all time favourites. Really absolutely sucks. Who else is 2016 going to take? Bowie, Lemmy, Phife, Rickman....fucking Paul Daniels!
Seriously loved Prince and can remember dancing with my mum to Purple Rain and Raspberry Beret when I was a kid. So many innovative songs. I rate him as more important to music than Michael Jackson.
Prince was, in my world, one of the best ever.

  • He was awesome. Brilliant singer, musician, songwriter, and absolutely true to his own brand of be your freaky, dirty self.

    This year fucking sucks.

  • Gutted. Saw him in 2007 and he was sensational but I wish I'd seen him when he was with the Revolution.

    RIP little guy.

  • Damn. He was a true great. Rip

  • This is the worst of 2016 by far, the others are all insignificant compared to him and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Put together they only have a smidgen of the impact Prince had on me.

Singer/Songwriter/multi instrumentalist/Dancer/Bandleader/Producer.....he was a legitimate master of all he did,  The guy was an EXCEPTIONAL guitarist but that was sometimes lost in amongst all the other things he could do so well.

I don't have enough time to mention all the amazing songs that touched my life over the years.

Thanks for giving the most AMAZING concert I've ever seen in 2003 little man.

    RIP.

  • Sad news. I thought to myself this morning I was never really his biggest fan, but then when I see the list of all the hits he has pumped out over the years I realised I was actually a huge fan without even really knowing it. You'd have to be living an Amish life style to not know the words to a whole heap of his music.

RIP, an absolute legend in every sense of the word.

  • Pinched from Facebook...
    "It's like George R R Martin is writting 2016"

  • So many innovative songs. I rate him as more important to music than Michael Jackson.

The Michael/Quincy Jones partnership was pretty special though.

Not to take anything away from Prince.

Him and Michael are my favourite 2 artists ever....  Michael has the best pure voice I've ever heard and Prince was simply a musical genius.

I saw Prince play his greatest hits tour in Brisbane a few years back and what an amazing show. Definately the best concert I've ever been to.. his guitar playing live was mind blowing,

  • Talented little dude. 57 is waaaay too young.
This year can eat a dick

  • SammyC and MN5. You have no idea how many arguments i have had with mates that are rock/metal fans about his guitar ability.
He was amazing but because of his oddness, pop status and overall persona I think its lost just how amazing a guitarist he was.

They nearly collaborated on a song in the 80s......probably a good thing it never happened cos I truly think the world would have imploded from too much sheer musical genius.

As mentioned 2016 has been a bad year but I could handle the others heaps more than this.

On a roadie to the rapa with the better half and my sons, needless to say there'll only be one artist playing on the way up and an extreme likelihood of some "Purple Rain" and "Under the Cherry Moon" on DVD tonight. ( possibly with a it of skipping, the movies are fucken awful despite the genius of many of the songs )

Just skip to the end for the awesomeness

There won't be many of these vids cos the great man was all over Youtube like a rash making sure his stuff isn't on there. It's a shame cos all he is doing is alienating a whole new generation of potential fans.

But yeah, he was a better guitarist than any of those guys on stage.....and that's not even taking into account the ridiculous talent he had in other areas. Just a fucken freak. As a pure axeman he is up there with other personal heros like Hendrix, Blackmore, Frusciante, Beck etc.

  • Too many great tracks to mention. Closest to a complete musical alrounder I can think of, perhaps Beck comes a distant 2nd.
Ronnie Corbett, Paul Daniels and now Prince. If I was under 5 foot 5 I'd be shitting myself.

Ha, despite feeling a bit dark today that made me laugh Cookie, good shit !

Stevie Wonder would take that second spot though I reckon.

I put that on the other thread ,love the comment about him going up to get his guitar .

    Tell me about it.....

The ones that annoy me the most are the idiots that rate Slash above Prince.  It's not even close

  • He played every single instrument on his early albums but I think we can all agree his best period was with the Revolution. It would have been tough being a musician under Prince, he had a strict no booze no alcohol policy and in one sense they were fucked either way.....if they didn't measure up he fired them, however if they were excellent in their own right or threatened to take his thunder they were gone as well, this is what happened to Dez Dickenson ( co sang the lead in 1999 ) and Brown Mark ( Bass player for the Revolution who was taller and "better looking" than Prince )

SammyC I do genuinely like Slash as a guitarist, he's the last of a breed in some ways. Frusciante does some superb work too but it's harder to get noticed in a band with Flea on bass.

I like Slash too mate, but he doesn't have anywhere near the skill or range that Prince does.

Can't stand the chilli peppers so won't comment on that 🙂

Apparently in an interview in the 1990's Eric Clapton was asked what it was like to be the worls best guitarist, his response was along the lines of ... no idea, ask Prince

Just skip to the end for the awesomeness

That's fucking amazing, one of the best solo's of all time

  • Ha, despite feeling a bit dark today that made me laugh Cookie, good shit !

Weird but whenever anyone dies who I give a shit about, I feel compelled to make a joke about it. Part of the grieving process I guess!
Stevie Wonder is da man for soul n funk but I thinking more of artists who crossed lots of different genres. Which just made me think of Bowie. Bollocks.

  •
Just skip to the end for the awesomeness

He used to play the ladies like that, too.

    Unlike this guy:

  • I never really thought much of Prince, didn't understand why people liked him....until I was watching the Superbowl in 2007.

The Colts led Chicago 16-14 going into halftime and I was going to go for a walk as the halftime show, along with the ads, were always over-rated. Merely just one big wankfest over the main sponsor (Pepsi, Coke etc).

But I decided to stick around the bar as I wanted to see how the show would go with the rain (it hadn't rained at a Superbowl in a few decades). I wanted to see if something funny/bad would happen.

First thing to happen was a massive explosion, BOOM!, and I thought: "oh shit, they just killed Prince!"

But the little teal midget appeared from the flames and smoke and played various songs from the greats (plus himself) and then he played Purple Rain in the muthafucking rain. It was a song I knew but never really appreciated. The phallic shadow was great too as Americans are funny about that shit.

When it was all said and done, the event was Prince - bookended by two halves of Yankball. I think the Colts won.

  • Utter fricking genius.

Dave Chappelle did a really funny piss take on Prince in his True Hollywood stories. With Chapelle dressed as Prince.

Then Prince released his single "Breakfast Can Wait" & the cover art was Chappelle dressed as Prince.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakfast_Can_Wait

There's very few musical legends who are willing to take the piss out of themselves to that degree,,,, in fact pretty much none.

Kevin Smiths (long) talk about Prince is awesome too -

  • That solo on while my guitar gently weeps is absolutely epic.  Up there with the best for sure.

I'm not going to get into any silly argument about whose the better guitarist but downplaying Slash and Frusciante for Prince, each to their own.

  • That Super Bowl performance really shows what he was. No overblown dance troupe or wardrobe malfunctions required just one little super over talented freak doing his stuff and wrapping 100,000 people around his finger.
Played a six string as good as Hendrix, danced better than MJ, could write a song like Dylan (Sign o the times is just awesome) and stayed true to himself the whole way through.
The list of hits he wrote for other people ( often chicks he was banging) is pretty good too.
Very glad that before he died he seemed to have taken ownership of Nothing compares 2 U back from Sinead O'Conner. That is one incredible song.

  • Fucking hell fellas - it gets worse - see attachment...

  • You had me at "solar panels"

  • Heard a quote about that superbowl performance yesterday
Organisers were really worried they would have no half time show as couldn't believe a "superstar" would perform in those conditions
When they put it to Prince his reply was "Can you make it rain MORE"
    And then he delivered.

  • Cool.

The NFL have put the whole Superbowl halftime show by Prince up on Youtube. Watch it while it stays there.

Sorry, I'm all for peoples memories, but the above is all absolute extreme bullshit.

Better than the best guitarist ever, better dancer than the guy who WAS the game changer.

What utter crap.  I'm not disrespecting prince.   I'm just not interested in seeing Hendrix and MJ disrespected because Prince died.

I fucken love Prince, definitely one of if not my FAVOURITE artist of all time. He was a sensational guitarist but you're right, no one changed the game like Jimi did. His moves were cool as well but again, not quite MJs level. I notice you didn't mention Dylan but he's above even the Beatles and Stones to me in terms of being overrated.....Warbling, indecipherable lyrics over twangy guitar with a voice that sounds like it was chewing sandpaper.....

Princes brilliance at everything ( you can still be below Hendrix and MJ and be brilliant ) is what set him apart.

I've enjoyed hearing some of the lesser known ( but still awesome ) Prince masterpieces on all the stations in the last couple of days, amongst others "anotherholeinyohead" "Hot Thing" "Peach" "Come" "Pop Life" "Its gonna be a beautiful night" "The Cross" and heaps of others......

I said played as good as Hendrix (which I believe is true). Hendrix was a true innovator and took things to different places (some of which Prince copied) but technically Prince would easily be his equal.

And Imo he was actually a better dancer than MJ. He was a far more fluid mover and wasn't an over-rehearsed copier of everyone else's moves. MJ was only a game changer in that he had a more popular platform to display things in.

I mean no disrespect at all to either of Hendrix or MJ.
