There won't be many of these vids cos the great man was all over Youtube like a rash making sure his stuff isn't on there. It's a shame cos all he is doing is alienating a whole new generation of potential fans.

But yeah, he was a better guitarist than any of those guys on stage.....and that's not even taking into account the ridiculous talent he had in other areas. Just a fucken freak. As a pure axeman he is up there with other personal heros like Hendrix, Blackmore, Frusciante, Beck etc.
-

Too many great tracks to mention. Closest to a complete musical alrounder I can think of, perhaps Beck comes a distant 2nd.

Ronnie Corbett, Paul Daniels and now Prince. If I was under 5 foot 5 I'd be shitting myself.

I put that on the other thread ,love the comment about him going up to get his guitar . -

SammyC and MN5. You have no idea how many arguments i have had with mates that are rock/metal fans about his guitar ability.

He was amazing but because of his oddness, pop status and overall persona I think its lost just how amazing a guitarist he was.

Tell me about it.....

The ones that annoy me the most are the idiots that rate Slash above Prince. It's not even close
-

He played every single instrument on his early albums but I think we can all agree his best period was with the Revolution. It would have been tough being a musician under Prince, he had a strict no booze no alcohol policy and in one sense they were fucked either way.....if they didn't measure up he fired them, however if they were excellent in their own right or threatened to take his thunder they were gone as well, this is what happened to Dez Dickenson ( co sang the lead in 1999 ) and Brown Mark ( Bass player for the Revolution who was taller and "better looking" than Prince )

SammyC I do genuinely like Slash as a guitarist, he's the last of a breed in some ways. Frusciante does some superb work too but it's harder to get noticed in a band with Flea on bass.
-

I like Slash too mate, but he doesn't have anywhere near the skill or range that Prince does.

Can't stand the chilli peppers so won't comment on that :)

Apparently in an interview in the 1990's Eric Clapton was asked what it was like to be the worls best guitarist, his response was along the lines of ... no idea, ask Prince
-

That's fucking amazing, one of the best solo's of all time
-

Weird but whenever anyone dies who I give a shit about, I feel compelled to make a joke about it. Part of the grieving process I guess!

Stevie Wonder is da man for soul n funk but I thinking more of artists who crossed lots of different genres. Which just made me think of Bowie. Bollocks. -

Unlike this guy:

I never really thought much of Prince, didn't understand why people liked him....until I was watching the Superbowl in 2007.

The Colts led Chicago 16-14 going into halftime and I was going to go for a walk as the halftime show, along with the ads, were always over-rated. Merely just one big wankfest over the main sponsor (Pepsi, Coke etc).

But I decided to stick around the bar as I wanted to see how the show would go with the rain (it hadn't rained at a Superbowl in a few decades). I wanted to see if something funny/bad would happen.

First thing to happen was a massive explosion, BOOM!, and I thought: "oh shit, they just killed Prince!"

But the little teal midget appeared from the flames and smoke and played various songs from the greats (plus himself) and then he played Purple Rain in the muthafucking rain. It was a song I knew but never really appreciated. The phallic shadow was great too as Americans are funny about that shit.

When it was all said and done, the event was Prince - bookended by two halves of Yankball. I think the Colts won.

-

Utter fricking genius.

Dave Chappelle did a really funny piss take on Prince in his True Hollywood stories. With Chapelle dressed as Prince.

Then Prince released his single "Breakfast Can Wait" & the cover art was Chappelle dressed as Prince.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakfast_Can_Wait

There's very few musical legends who are willing to take the piss out of themselves to that degree,,,, in fact pretty much none.

Kevin Smiths (long) talk about Prince is awesome too -

-

That solo on while my guitar gently weeps is absolutely epic. Up there with the best for sure.

I'm not going to get into any silly argument about whose the better guitarist but downplaying Slash and Frusciante for Prince, each to their own.
-
That Super Bowl performance really shows what he was. No overblown dance troupe or wardrobe malfunctions required just one little super over talented freak doing his stuff and wrapping 100,000 people around his finger.
Played a six string as good as Hendrix, danced better than MJ, could write a song like Dylan (Sign o the times is just awesome) and stayed true to himself the whole way through.
The list of hits he wrote for other people ( often chicks he was banging) is pretty good too.
Very glad that before he died he seemed to have taken ownership of Nothing compares 2 U back from Sinead O'Conner. That is one incredible song. -

Heard a quote about that superbowl performance yesterday

Organisers were really worried they would have no half time show as couldn't believe a "superstar" would perform in those conditions

When they put it to Prince his reply was "Can you make it rain MORE"

And then he delivered.
