NFL 2016
-

I thought this would be a good time to fire up the 2016 NFL thread.

Tom Brady's suspension has been reinstated on appeal so at this stage is due to miss 4 games this season.

This Friday Aus/NZ time is Day 1 of the 2016 NFL Draft which continues to run over the weekend.

The big news from the draft is the LA Rams have traded up to Number 1 (from 15 with Tennessee) and the Philadelphia Eagles have traded up to Number 2 (from 8 with Cleveland). It's pretty much a done deal each of the two top QBs will go 1 and 2, with the smart money on the more polished Jared Goff to go 1 to LA and big-bodied Carson Wentz to go number 2 to the Eagles.

My 49ers haven't been able to get a deal done to trade Kaepernick so for now he remains. I wouldn't be surprised with a trade down by the 49ers in Round 1 if one of their coveted players (e.g. DE Buckner) doesn't fall to them.

The top 10 in the Draft Round 1 are as follows

1. LA Rams

2. Philadelphia Eagles

3. San Diego Chargers

4. Dallas Cowboys

5. Jacksonville Jaguars

6. Baltimore Ravens

7. San Francisco 49ers

8. Cleveland Browns

9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

10. New York Giants
-

Rams and Eagles probably overpaid for the 1st and 2nd picks. Not too many of their fans are liking the trade up.

One of my favorite players in the draft is Karl Joseph. Love his aggression and pop for his size. Might slip to the 2nd round because he's still recovering from an ACL injury.

I really like Myles Jack too. He might be the best player in the draft, but with his knee being described as a ticking time bomb, teams could be scared to draft him high.
-

So many rumours flying around.

Apparently the Browns and Cowboys are trying to organise to trade back in to the end of Round 1 (presumably for a QB). Paxton Lynch the target perhaps.
-

I'm praying one of the top two offensive linemen drops to the 49ers at #7. Hopefully Tunsil (but the Titans will probably get him).

-

And away we go..... :good:

LA is on the clock.
-

First pick in the draft is, as expected, Cal QB Jared Goff.

-

First surprise is in - Bosa to San Diego at 3.

-

49ers are in a real good spot - both tackles and DE Buckner are on the board and one of the 3 will be available. Perhaps 2 of the 3 if Jags go for Ramsay.

-

Baltimore's pick is in (OT Ronnie Stanley) and the 49ers are up next. Tunsil posted something stupid on his social media accounts so he will fall in the draft I guess (character issues).

-

49ers pick DE Buckner. Any good?

Excellent prospect. The guy was the PAC-12 Defensive Player of the Year last year and his Oregon defense was trash. He's the prototypical 3-4 defensive end, great measurables and has a serious motor. He can plug straight in on the opposite end to his teammate from Oregon Arik Armstead who was a 1st round pick last year. Both Chip Kelly and the new Defensive Line coach are from Oregon, they know Buckner well.
-

49ers also trade back into the 1st round to snag the best rated offensive guard in the draft - Joshua Garnett from Stanford. Chip Kelly wants to run the football and Garnett was the best graded run blocking interior offensive lineman in the draft and a likely target of the Seahawks at spot 31 who ended up taking a guard/tackle.

-

And with Denver drafting Paxton Lynch it appears CKap will have to stay in San Fran for now. Winning day for the 49ers.

-

Australia will be sweating in its jandals for the next few months leading up to the start of NFL 2016. The 49ers drafted Kelvin Taylor, Florida Uni running back, in the sixth round. He's the son of former Jags running back icon Fred Taylor, so pretty good genes. I doubt the Hayne Plane makes the final cut tbh.

Speaking of the Jags, they won this year's draft. They will have a killer defence next season. Kansas City and Seattle also drafted better than the rest. Seattle got QBs Adams (Oregon) and QB Boykins (TCU) as undrafted free agents.

49ers won the first day but made some strange picks later in the draft including QB Jeff Driskel.
-
Denver picked an Aussie as well

I'm guessing you liked Boykins and Adams more than Driskel? From what i've read Driskel fits the Chip Kelly system perfectly and has some outstanding traits (size, arm) but he needs to be rebuilt after being mishandled at Florida. He's in a good spot to develop with 2 starters on the roster already (Kap, Gabbert).

I think the strangest pick for the 49ers was the 4th Round CB Robinson - barely played in college, stick-thin and character concerns.
-
Hayne goneski. He's going the Olympics to play 7s

Or to play for Fiji at the Olympics in 7s rugby?

I never knew Hayne was Fijian. Doesn't look it.

He's hardly going to just walk into the team either.
-

apparently his dad is Fijian, and if I heard correctly his dad played for the Warriors...

-

Yeah and Hayne played for Fiji at the 08 Rugby League World Cup I think.

Seems like more of a face-saving transition rather than a burning desire for 7s, if it's truly the latter why has he left it so late.
-

NFL was the bigger dream?

Step into French rugby be the logical choice given Paramatta aint gonna be able to stump up the cash for him!
-

He could come to the Warriors if they can cast off Hurrell and open some salary cap space! Though whomever can buy Hurrell would probably be better off just buying Hayne.

An Aussie drug administrator is pointing out Hayne is ineligible for 7s because the NFL is not drug testing compliant with rugby's Olympic requirements.
-

surely he can just get tested voluntarily?

-

Hayne will come off the NRL in fucking good shape. But NFL shape. How is he going to get "7s fit" in a couple of months?

Is Hayne retiring from the NFL like me retiring from the All Blacks?
-

Another NFL player has joined up with USA 7s (with no such qualms) so I think Aussie administrator is talking a load of bullshit. Aussies do that from time to time.

I'm guessing the 49ers would have sat down with Hayne and said he wasn't in their short term or long term future. They have just drafted a pretty talented RB from Florida.

So Hayne got his manager to see if any of the Olympic squads were interested and it was Fiji (thought Aussie would have creamed their jeans over the great and glorious Hayne joining their little tinpot team).
-

Nate Ebner moved earlier this year so the 6-month period probably would expire before the Olympics. Is that who you're talking about?
-

There's no way the Aussies would take him at this point. They've already ditched Quade, and have clearly opted for a policy of excluding 'ring ins' and picking their established 7s specialists.
-

Good on them, sticking to their principals
-
Wasn't going to make the playing roster for the NFL, as we've seen the Eels don't have room in the salary cap for him (if they ever did) and this is simply PR. The demands of training and playing 7s is completely at odds with the work he's been doing over the last couple of years for the NRL. He won't be playing for Fiji in London, so they've no idea how well he could play. And it's not like Fiji are desperate for some 7s playing talent this year. Ben Ryan would have to have an aneurysm to select him for Rio without at least one competition under his belt.

Surely he won't be anything like ready for 7s in such a short space of time. And it's not like he's joining the 49ers of 7s, these guys are the farking Denver Broncos.

I hear Hayne has only been practicing laterals during 49ers training camps :)

I actually think he'll go alright at 7s. Good luck to him. -
