That is why Police will ALWAYS attend a '1D' ( Domestic Dispute ) no matter how trivial it might seem when someone rings 111.

For example a family member might ring and say "male x and female y" are fighting, once the relationship is established and they find out they are spouses, siblings or parent/children they will attend at some stage no matter what even if the caller mentions things have calmed down.

Again, that only accounts for those actually reported in the first place.
-

at my old place we had some neighbours having a huge row, we called the cops within about 5 mins of it kicking off, they said they were on the way as they had already had 2 other calls!

Yup. My dad has known Peter Williams for a long time (him and Mum taught with Peter's parents) so when I was at Uni, Peter gave me a tour around TVNZ, and said anytime I needed a hand with media stuff, to give him a yell (he really is a nice, friendly guy). Anyhoo, I had to write a feature in my third year, and Peter agreed to let me profile him. Interviewed him, and some of his colleagues (including Mike McRoberts lol). Next thing I know, Veitch barrels on up and takes over, talking a mile a minute about himself, with a few refs to Peter.

Good old Geoff Bryan is another one of that ilk. Still nice to hear him doing the news on the Sound. I remember the spiky mullet and beard he used to have in the 80s. It was a fucken shock when the beard went.

Kristen Dunne-Powell's police statement detailed a number of violent assaults by Tony Veitch

"Absolutely it was a violent relationship," she told us. "I was in denial of being a battered woman."

As Dunne said, charges for the other incidents were never presented to the court - so it should be noted that Veitch has never had an opportunity in court to defend himself against the allegations.

But in the context of his continuing to claim it was a single episode, we've gone back to the statement Dunne-Powell made to detectives about the relationship, which began in 2002.

Here are some excerpts.

March/April 2003, Auckland:

An argument in the hallway of Dunne-Powell's house deteriorates into violence.

"He kicked me 2 or 3 times in the thigh on one of my legs. The kicks were all one after the other, fairly quickly.

"I remember Tony leaving the house straight after the last kick. I saw him walk out the front door at the end of the hallway."

January 2004, Mangawhai:

The couple have gone to the Northland town for a weekend away to discuss problems in their relationship when the discussion becomes heated.

"At some stage during the argument Tony kicked a hole in the wall near the balcony in his anger. He did it in front of me.

"I think it was a half wall. His foot went right into it and created a hole in the Gib board.

"When Tony assaulted me, I would ride a fine line for the few days afterward. Not wanting to say anything to set him off again. Not wanting to antagonise him. He was always so apologetic afterward and it seemed genuine."

June 2005, Rotorua:

During a night in Rotorua, Dunne-Powell decides to leave after becoming upset.

"I was standing facing a wall packing my bag when Tony suddenly grabbed me with both hands and threw me onto the bed.

"When he got home we talked for a bit about what went on. Somewhere between his apologies and what we were talking about, as to whose fault it all was, he got angry with me again."

July 2005, Auckland:

At home in Auckland, the pair have an argument in the lounge.

"Tony chased me, from the bottom lounge room, up into our bedroom and into the walk-in wardrobe.

"I wanted to get away from him. I dropped to the ground to crawl out and away but as I did he started kicking me hard three times.

"I was on all fours when the first kick landed on my right thigh. It was so painful, that I actually ended up flipping over somehow onto my bottom, so the next kicks were to my left leg."

November 2005, Auckland:

The morning after a party to celebrate Veitch's radio station's survey results, the pair argue about a woman who was at the bar.

"Then he hit me in the torso. He used his left hand.

"It was just one blow. He was saying words but I don't remember what they were. I was apologising to him so he would calm down."

December 2005, Auckland:

After spending the night at Veitch's house, Dunne-Powell is leaving in the morning when an argument about their relationship blows up.

"I don't know how I came to be on the ground but I remember being in a sort of crab-like position on my bottom. Tony was kicking me in the legs like he was trying to get me out the door. I don't remember how many kicks he gave me but the kicks were to both legs.

"On 26 December 2005 I went to the Boxing Day races at Ellerslie with friends...and a few others from Vodafone.

"I wore a long dress to cover the bruising on my legs."

January 2006, Auckland:

The pair have broken up but are having a discussion about getting back together when an argument develops after Veitch receives a text from another woman. It quickly becomes violent.

"I was backed against the wall for only seconds and instinctively slid my back down the wall and went to dive out from under Tony.

"As I got to the crouch position, I felt 2 or 3 kicks land in my right lower back and I heard a crack.

"I remember looking up at Tony who was crouched down beside me. He was saying, "Are you OK, are you OK?" I was saying, 'This is bad, this is bad'."

After this incident, x-rays confirmed Dunne-Powell's back was fractured. Their relationship was finally over for good in March 2006.

Will more come of this?

Pretty big issue if you keep going on about how the incident was a one off when it fact it was anything but.
-

why do we have to continually go down the Veitch path?

He's been done for what he claimed and owned up to. Everything else is just down to a matter of he-said vs she-said.

The truth is anybody's guess, although it seems many people just want to believe what they want. And that's fine, and given that he certainly rubs a few people up the wrong way, thats to be expected. I am not insinuating anything here, but am I the only one who had an ex, or who had mates who had ex's who turned up to be full-of-shit psycho's? Things aren't always as they seem.

Don't like him, then don't follow him, don't listen to him.
-

I don't. But then he's hard to avoid on Radio Sport, and when his 'all about me' apologies appear in the press/Facebook last year.

"We" continually go down the Veitch path because he's constantly there in the media, and loves to talk about his redemption path.

You're far from the only one who has had, or who has known people who've dated "full-of-shit pyscho's", but in those cases, the people I've known with psycho hose beast exes have pleaded innocent, not paid hush money, and have been found innocent too... -

Are you for real? He broke her back in one of the incidents. That fairly convincingly sways the "he said/she said" argument into her favour, regardless of whether they've been tested in court. This whole time he has only ever thought about himself in any of the media stuff he has done.

I don't know Tony Veitch, I don't know her and I don't know a thing about their previous relationship. However, I do know a shitload about domestic violence, it's patterns and it's causes. These things almost NEVER happen in isolation. Particularly not something as severe as breaking a woman's spine by way of kicking her There is almost always a pattern of escalating violence and behaviour that leads towards physical assaults.

As for the "he's been done for what he's owned up to" - absolutely, but it's pretty bloody hard to explain away how your missus ends up with a broken back. It's not at all uncommon for criminals to own up to things there are strong evidence on but to deny the other charges where the evidence is less compelling, because they know it will be harder to prove. Doesn't mean it didn't happen and implying she's a full of shit psycho is kind of like walking down the same path of "she wasn't raped, she was asking for it"

I'm a gambling man, and I'd put the house on the fact that the other incidents happened.
-

Everything about this case makes me want to vomit, not least of which that these two sacks of shit have been allowed to plead guilty to manslaughter, like the man's fucking cousin who did the same fucking thing.

How reassuring to know WINZ and the police are still as fucking useless as ever when it comes to coordinating services. Eight interventions and the babies are still in the house? Disgusting.

One of the biggest downsides of the government cutting funding to Crown Law (the private law firms who prosecute high end cases on behalf of the Police/public) is that there has been massive restructuring within these firms, leading to staff being cut and them having to run the same amount of cases on less than half of the budget they previously had.

This has lead to enormous pressure being put on them and the Police to resolve cases prior to court, because jury trials are viewed as lengthy, costly and often rolling the dice as to whether or not a guilty result will be obtained. The huge downside to this is that defence lawyers generally know this and suggest ridiculous resolutions (such as the one above). This is most often seen in drug dealing and violence cases though, not murders and certainly not child abuse.

I'm still scratching my head as to how the manslaughter pleas got accepted by the Crown/Police though. Absolutely disgusting
-

And you may be right. You'd know a lot more about this stuff than I, I've just been involved with isolated incidents, which I've found quite eye-opening. Having had one mate accused falsely of rape growing up, and another of domestic violence (where I witnessed the whole thing) has made me wary of holding any view on domestic situations.

The whole thing is now just he-said vs she-said, with various claims from one vs various claims from the other. I don't know why Veitch wrote his article, maybe he was asked to? He fucked up in a massive massive way, and by doing that he's undoubtedly a grade-a shitbag, but we either live in a society that allows criminals to reform, or we don't.
-
With Veitch, people sometimes ask a version of 'how long must he be punished for/what about second chances?' Etc.

And for a while I was okay with him being back on the radio, and Liked his Facebook page for a while. But there's a point where someone just has to say "It was very wrong and I'm very sorry" whenever a matter like that is raised and otherwise say very little about it.

Not, as a parody post I saw the other day put it: several pages of "me me me me me me me me"... "Signed, Me" -

I do hear what MR is saying, I think the whole odious nature of Veich is how in all his public apology bullshit he seems to weasel in with some sickening comment of how tough it's been for him and his career. Boo fucken hoo you fluffybunny, anyone who has 150K to throw at someone certainly doesn't get one ounce of sympathy from me and you can be assured he'll be on some big bucks in the gig he's doing now.

Absolutely I agree. I have more than my fair share of mates who have had crazy ex's and I'm certainly not one to wholeheartedly believe a baseless allegation, but often the nature of intimate partner violence is that it happens behind closed doors and there is obviously the feeling and emotions involved that stop people coming forward at the time.

I look at the allegations leveled against Shaun Kenny Dowell as one of the things where the he said/she said system crucifies the guy. She was found out in court as having tried to get a heap of money out of the Roosters etc to not lay complaints and seemingly rightly so, the charges were dismissed, given there was no independent evidence of violence.

However, when someone's back gets broken, it kinda blows the he said/she said thing out of the water. I would be very surprised if his ex partner thought "I've got him against the ropes, now I can make up whatever I like and the Police will buy it" because surely you'd come up with something more juicy than what was in the Police file?

I was neither here nor there on him coming back into the public spotlight. I'm a believer in people's chance to rehabilitate and believe they should be given that opportunity. But when he uses that platform as a star to make self serving statements about his own innocence or guilt and to continue to make subtle digs at his ex, I think he crosses the line and he should be sent back to his plan B job, whatever that is.
-

Shaun Metcalf , there was thread about him when he tried to come back to the Warriors . It wasn't just Endacott saying that either, Selwyn Pearce said some stupid shit too. Metcalf should have got a life ban , the only reason they did that to the girl was because he didn't want a baby getting in the way of his league career .
