@taniwharugby Bridges can't out-nice Jacinda, and he's a fucking fool to try. Besides the fact that he's a tool and comes across as greased up smarm, right now the opposition party needs fangs, not gummy grins.

I would have picked Amy Adams and Nikki Kaye aka Starbrite killer, and let Crusher off the leash and on the attack. That would silence those who might still see National as a stuffy white men's party vs the Jacinda effect. Bridges is a total non-event

@canefan Yep. It's the role of the opposition party to hold the party in power to account. Make them be transparent, accountable, explain themselves. National have had SO MANY fuck ups handed to them on a silver platter as Labour bumble from one disaster to another with MPs who are beyond clueless, and yet they've done next to nothing. And gummy bear Bridges doing town halls isn't going to do jack shit to bolster the confidence of supporters. Did I read the other day he was at 9% preferred PM?

They risk not making it back in next term with him at the helm. That and an adherence to Bill English's assertion that fostering a coalition partner shouldn't be a top priority

Outside of act they don’t have any coalition options, Winston hates them and it’s very difficult to start a new party . Their best bet is to let their supporters know that two ticks for National is their only option. Green supporters who aren’t far left nutcases are going to be asking hemselves what the point in voting watermelon is when they only go into coalition with labour and utterly servile.

I don’t know Jegga, although the eco-warrior Greens may be disappointed at the way things have turned out, I reckon you might be surprised at the hard leftie Greens who are fapping themselves blind thinking that the coalition is sticking it to the man.

The Nat vote is almost maxxed out. So where are they going to grab votes from? A Winnie-less NZF? Disaffected Labour swing voters? Greenies? I can't see them getting much of any of that. They are going to have to work harder at pissing off their constituents to drive them into the arms of the great blue satan

I can't see a realistic coalition partner for National.
So why not try and steal some voters from the other mobs.
As others have said why not try and implement some realistic environmental policies? Combine save the world with business and employment is good vs. capitalism is nazism and any sort of business destroys the world and is anti-transgenderism and you'd reckon you might pick up a few votes.

Given NZF don't really have a particular philosophy that might be a start

I think the gloss of that started to wear off after the medicinal marijuana bill got tossed because Winston didn’t want a bar of it and apart from the drilling insanity they’ve achieved very little.

Are there any actual true environmentalists left in the Green party? They seem to be far more interested in hardcore socialism nowadays, with a seething hatred for business and farming. (I don't consider that pregnant twit wanking on about cloth nappies to be someone who cares about the environment.) I kind of think National could lure back some of the moderate Green voters if they included some half-decent policies on cleaning up rivers, beaches, upgrading treatment plants, public transport etc.

Not strictly true. National would do better leaking a few party votes to Act because of the formula used to calculate list MPs under MMP
Here's what Whyte wrote back in 2014:
Second, once a party wins an electorate, the number of votes needed to win a Party seat is very low. Each National list MP will take about 60,000 votes, more than the total votes of any one electorate. By contrast, just 28,000 votes will add me to David Seymour. And 44,000 Party votes will give ACT three MPsThe vote share and electorate seats isn't that different now. So, leaking a modest amount of party votes from National to Act would result in more MPs for National+Act with the same number of votes for National+Act

As much as I don't like Bridges. That article is proof of nothing but the writers animus
Cormack is about as balanced as a one-legged tight-rope walker. He briefly interned for National (for Bill English) for 5 months in 2004 while at Vic Uni. That's in complete contrast to his paid role as Communications and Policy Director with the Greens in 2015. His take on this should be taken with a grain of salt the size of Lake Grassmere.

I wish they’d disclose those sorts of things , after it came out during the latest labour sex scandal that they hadn’t told the parents a six abuse councillor was found who said it was best practice. Turns out she worked for Jim Neanderton , the alliance and the Greens as well as labour I think in the past. Her opinion would be seen in a very different light if the article mentioned it,

Political points scored now are pretty irrelevant when the election is still more than two years away.
I'm not too bothered if the politicians keep a low profile for a couple of years after the election. I don't need Bridges in my living room every evening telling me what "Oi think....".
I reckon it's easy to induce "politics fatigue" by sniping away continuously about things that matter fuck all to most people. Then when the election comes around, people are sick of hearing you (the opposition) drone on about the government's failings.
One good reason why Trump will probably win again.

Old Whinny, said that the excise tax on Ciggies is causing robberies and murders during an interview about legalising cannabis, never mind the tax burden with the harm smoking causes.
He is happy to spend however much money on a referendum on Cannabis, but said it was wasted on the Flag...
