Highlanders Kings, Super Bang Bang

  • Plenty of good cattle sitting on the bench should the starting team struggle to put away the pitiful Kings.

Everyone's favourite enigma is starting in the wing, while I'm looking forward to see Te Aihe Toma at halfback.

  • The TAB have given the Kings a 27.5 point head start! I'm having a punt, considering they've ripped the spine out of the Highlanders team.

Even against the Kings, can Te Aihe Toma and Marty Banks lead the team to a 28 point victory?

EDIT: Admittedly there is some good firepower on the bench, but still.

Why not? After all - they did against the Crusaders in the last (June break) game - in the pouring rain.

Maybe I'm forgetting just how shit the Kings are, but it seems like a very generous points start, considering the travel and lack of star players.

Good point re the Crusaders game.

  • Highlanders forcing the offloads, not going to hand. Lots of shitty play so far.

  • A grad total of 38 people in the crowd.

  • Sad to see so many empty seats in that stadium again.

Btw, Marty Banks is out with a hamstring injury, so Sopoaga is starting & Fletcher Smith on the bench.

  • C'mon Landers, I didn't get up early to be bored to sleep again. I expect a try fest!

  • I want my margin covered damn it.

  • Toma seems a bit overawed by the occasion of his debut, his throwing's not very accurate so far

  • Finally, after 22 minutes the first try (Faddes).

  • thats the worst half the Highlanders have played this season, surely

  • The Landers don't seem to be able to pass tonight.

  • Missed tackle from Emery and the Kings score a try. I don't remember seeing the Highlanders play so bad before, this season. They sure miss the likes of Ben and Aaron Smith.

    10-8 Highlanders at half time.

  • absolute horror show, HT, Landers lead 10-8

  • Continuity thing with all the subs and then injury replacements before game.

  • Second try Faddes in the 45th minute.

  • Try Dan Pryor. Sops misses the conversion. Highlanders lead 20 to 8 after 55 minutes.

  • And the Kings are in again, Holy shit what a shitter than shit game from the Highlanders. They should put 50 on these guys, instead it's only 20 to 18 in their favour.

  • So Tongia off but the other wing who has been average stays on.  Is this something to do why he is not playing more?

  • Don't

Naah, it is called playing for your team.

Has Wilson even touched the ball tonight?

  • I should have asked that question sooner. Now he scores a try!

  • This has been embarrassing. One more try please and limp away with the bonus point.

  • Always happens and yes.  I remember him kicking it out on the full otherwise absent.

  • Bonus point try Patrick Osborne.

  • Great try.

  • Oh great and Liam Squire has gone off injured.

  • Hat-trick Faddes, great try.

  • Well done Faddess

  • I predicted a 50 pointer.  Was close.

  • From 20-18 to 48-18.  Not too shabby.

  • Wow.  He is pretty impressive.  Heck we have so much potential AB talent out there in the backs.

  • Seiuli scores his first try. Highlanders win 48-18. Good result but after a terrible game.

I'd advise anyone who hasn't watched the game yet before reading this thread: wait for the highlights video.

  • Faddes has been excellent all year.  He has had a couple of outstanding games, especially against the Crusaders, but I've watched him closely all year and he really impresses me.  Runs hard all game, and is extremely solid.  He's also extremely quick.

He could be our 13 for Japan 2019.

  • Despite the score that was a bloody average game by the Highlanders, but hey, they piled on points when needed, got the win and the BP so basically you couldn't ask for more.

I was ironing while watching the first half and thinking man Aaron Smith is a bit sluggish this week, maybe he needed a week off, about 20 minutes in I realised it wasn't him.

Kings put in a good effort for nearly 70 minutes and the try to Sykes had a cracking build up.

  • So it's a good thing my supposed recording of the game was actually the Lions v Sharks rather than Clan v Kings? Something weird on the Foxtel EPG.
Doesn't appear I missed too much?

The All Blacks/NZ Super Rugby website had those two games confused, too. I only discovered it last night when I looked at Sky's tv guide. Maybe something wrong in the original Sanzaar schedule that was released last year?
And no, the highlights video will show all that was worth watching:

I didn't see the Lions game so can't compare the two - but there was some of decent play in the Highlanders match amongst the dross.

  • a more picky ref woulda called the Highlanders on the try where Sopoaga chipped to Osborne as there was a player in front of Sopoaga and he carried on moving forward toward the ball, despite the fact he was never in a position to affect play (think it was the Crusaders had one denied because Matt Todd was ahead but well away from the play)
