Taranaki v Hawke's Bay

  • Magpies to play Taranaki:

    1. Ricky Riccitelli
    2. Ash Dixon ©
    3. Ben May
    4. Geoff Cridge
    5. Mark Abbott
    6. Hugh Renton
    7. Tony Lamborn
    8. Fa'alemiga Selesele
    9. Brad Weber
    10. Ihaia West
    11. Mason Emerson
    12. Billy Ropiha
    13. Jonah Lowe
    14. Ryan Tongia
    15. Lewis Marshall

      Reserves:
    16. Jorian Tangaere
    17. Jason Long
      18. Tolu Fahamokioa
    18. Josh Eden Whaitiri
    19. Ben Hamelink
      21. Ellery Wilson
    20. Tiaan Falcon
    21. Matt Garland

      Changes from last week:
Ben May and Brad Weber start instead of Tolu Fahamokioa and Ellery Wilson, who move to the bench. Ben Hamelink replaces Marino Mikaele Tu'u on the bench.

  • I'm really worried about this match now after seeing Wellington get dismantled by Otago last night.

Is TBW still injured or is Philpott just being himself?

  • Lengthy injury list is as follows:
    Gareth Evans
    Brendon Edmonds
    Michael Allardice
    Ross Filipo
    Sanaila Waqa
    Trent Boswell-Wakefield
    Chris Eaton
    Sam McNicol
    Robbie Fruean
    Shannan Chase
according to this morning's HB Today

  • Interesting change in the reserves with Hamelink coming in for Mikaele Tu'u who doesn't appear on the "not available for selection because of injury" list. Not knowing anything about Hamelink. Does he bring things to the game in different ares to Mikaele Tu'u that are more suited to what will be needed against Taranaki or is he rated higher than Mikaele Tu'u and simply coming back from injury that saw him sit out the Wellington match?

    This is from the HBT:

In addition to swapping halfback and tighthead prop, the only other change sees Hastings Rugby and Sports loosie Ben Hamelink replace clubmate Marino Mikaele-Tu'u.

Should Hamelink get game time, it will be his first-class debut.

Mikaele-Tu'u and Magpies prop Mason Kean will both play for the Hawke's Bay under-19s against Manawatu at Park Island tomorrow.

Unavailable for the Magpies tomorrow are All Blacks Israel Dagg and Brodie Retallick and 10 players; Evans, Brendon Edmonds, Michael Allardice, Ross Filipo, Sanaila Waqa, Trent Boswell-Wakefield, Chris Eaton, Sam McNicol, Robbie Fruean and Shannan Chase, all on the injured list.

Former Magpie Trinity Spooner-Neera has been named on the Taranaki bench after an outstanding performance for the Taranaki development team last weekend.

Former Hawke's Bay Under-20 rep Rhys Marshall will start at hooker for the hosts.

Never really trust HBT though, because Fruean is on the team list of the HB Saracens (playing the Manawatu Development team tomorrow), so he can't be injured.

About last night's Wellington game: they looked a lot weaker than last week, so I'm not sure there's much reason to worry. The ref (Nick Briant) was also much better than last week's ref (Brett Johnson). Brendon Pickerill will be tomorrow's ref.
On the hand, since the first PS game, the Bay have been especially weak on defence. That didn't improve much with the introduction of Super Rugby players. Last week, we had a team that had been training together for less than a week, so there's hope things will improve.

    Hamelink is a 7, Mikaele Tu'u is an 8.

  • So Eden Whaitiri must be covering lock, number 8 and blindside or maybe Renton is the number 8 cover?

  • I would say Mark Abbott is covering six and eight.

He played six against Canterbury last year and eight against Northland in 2014.

  • Goodness, he must be keeping those things under his hat as everything I have seen him display points to him being suited exclusivelas a lock. Any too late for changes now as the Bay file out onto the field behind captain Ash Dixon, accompanied by a waving of his Magpies flag by yours truely!

  • An encouraging start by the Bay with a lineout steal much appreciated, hopefully a sign of things ot come. Followed up by forcing a turnover from Taranaki a couple of plays later.

  • The Bay are rewarded with a nice early try out wide on the right by Mason Emerson converted by Ihaia West to take the lead seven nil in what looks like to be sunny conditions if a bit windy

Jonah Lowe. Mason gets the points for the assist

  • Yeeeees Jonah Lowe in for the second try after a beautiful break by Brad Weber, right under the posts as a bonus!

  • Only to be foiled by a hometown TMO call.................

  • Fuck!!!!

  • Here is a chance to score a try without involving the TMO.

  • Damn, pushed out in the corner

  • Dixon in. Justice done

  • Yeeees, Ash Dixon in, take that TMO! Hawkes Bay  14 - 00 Taranaki after about twenty minutes

  • i'm happy for Taranaki to get 3 points for every 14 the good guys get...

  • i'm happy for Taranaki to get 3 points for every 14 the good guys get...

Even happier for them to miss their kicks...

  • Some fierce tackling going on out there, a big contraast to the almost touch tackles exhibited last game thank goodness.

  • Weber running at twice the speed his dad or grandad ever did

  • Phew, Taranaki knock on in the act of scoring a try under the posts and luckily the referee spots it. I'm nervous should this TMO be called on after his first effort.

  • A couple of big tackles by Riccitelli and then Tongia snuff out a promising Taranaki attack not long after McKenzie hoofs over a longish range penalty  Hawkes Bay 14  -  03  Taranaki after thirty three minutes. Taranaki gaining ascendency with the sunlight disappearing.

  • Was that really an obstruction? You could almost rule a penalty against the Taranaki player for taking the HB player out with out the ball.

  • Shit we're missing a lot of first up tackles, luckily the Naki can't hold on to the ball otherwise we'd be behind.

    Try Crosswell.

  • Was that really an obstruction?

    no-one was impeded, so no

  • A real damn shame that it cost the Bay a converted try for a second time then, one for and one against.

  • Some fierce tackling going on out there, a big contraast to the almost touch tackles exhibited last game thank goodness.

Sorry guys, this has proved to be the kiss of death as the touch style made a big reappearance almost immediately afterward.

  • TAB odds now showing Taranaki $1.80  Hawkes Bay $1.90 head to head as the second half starts. Hopefully the wind will be worth a few points.

  • Oh no TMO called on to adjudicate on whether Taranaki has scored in a massive pile up under the Bay's posts, I am getting nervous about this.

  • Iopu-Aso rabbits his way over for the try after the five metre scrum HB 14  -  17 Taranaki
It should never have happened thanks to Ihaia West punting out on the full after a carry back into the 22.

  • More diffident play by HB lets in yet another converted try. HB  14 - 24  Taranaki It's easy to see not much, if any, improvement has been made after the dicking Wellington handed out to my guys.

  • Wow, we've really shit the bed now.

  • Whats worse is there are still 27 more minutes to endure. Surely things can't get any worse????

  • Whats worse is there are still 27 more minutes to endure. Surely things can't get any worse????

Yep, appears they can, the Naki in again.

  • But they do, god this is getting embarrassing. More diaboliocal attempted tackles lets yet another try in. HB  14 - 31  Taranaki

  • Well, maybe we can look forward to a parade down Emerson St, with Philpott impaled on Hawkeye's beak
