    • RE: Christchurch Gunman in Mosque

Been on the phone all morning trying to make sure everyone is safe. I only know one Muslim back home. Lets be honest its Christchurch after all. He is safe.

Spoke to my mum who works in the hospital she says they will be doing what they can. But there are only twelve operating theatres in the hospital and she doubts many surgeons have any experience with gunshot wounds. But everyone is just rolling their sleeves up and doing what they can to save as many as they can. I know we think of those surgeon guys as porsche driving flash harrys. But on days like this those guys step up.

Personally I am just angry. You want a war, go to Syria you fuckwad. There is more then enough people for you to go toe to toe with. You won't do that though because you are all chickenshit cowards.

I hope these losers names are wiped from existence. I hope the guy who tried to take him down unarmed is hailed as a hero to all Cantabs for all time, his name should never go away.

Finally as I have said on here before, I work with a big group of Muslim guys. They have all come to see me in the office this morning to say they will be praying for everyone in Christchurch today. Paris is with you today! All be it a small part of a shitty suburb in Paris.

Fucked if I feel like talking about sport now.

If he didn't share the same values of the ARU then he had every opportunity to not sign that contract but he signed it so tough shit. Now hes hiding from his boss like a little bitch. If I were his agent, I would be sooo pissed right now.

    • RE: French Politics

I wrote this post once already but realised that 90% of the debate is of literally no interest to you guys on here. All you probably whan to know is what was said about Europe and what was said about terrorism, maybe the economy as well I'm not sure on that? But if I am wrong and there are other topics that were touched on that you are interested in I can try and provide a synopsis of what was said. It was pretty diverse and covered a lot of stuff some of it very low level and detailed.

There were two very different approaches taken to the debate. Macron came to talk policy and to talk down to Le Pen.

Le Pen came to interrogate Macron on his policies and try and paint him as part of the previous government.

First some background, It got ugly and the moderators had no real control the whole debate. A lot of interruptions and a lot of talking over the top of each other. The format of French debates is the 2 candidates face each other at a desk with moderators there is no live audience just the cameras and the prepared questions which they both are aware of. Le Pen showed up with piles of folders and was constantly shuffling them and looking for things but only produced about two things that I can remember from them. Macron came with a notepad and a pen. Because of the format, the zingy one liners and what not that you get in the US debates, tend to fall pretty flat when you don't have an audience to reveal in you sick burn. Not to say there weren't a few good ones they just don't score you points like they would if you had someone there to actually laugh at them. Le Pens about a woman being in charge of France was funny, as was Macron thanking Le Pen on behalf of the gay community in France for all she had done for them. It did get personal though Le Pen denied she was a racist. Macron denied he was an elitist.

Le Pen tried to paint Macron as complicit in the failings of the last government. But she didn't come well prepared to this discussion, and economics is not something you want to spar with Macron about. He repeatedly corrected her figures and had to explain to her some basic principles to her. This is when he started using his quiet big boy voice. He also started pushing her for her policies but she just went back on the attack. This continued throughout the debate. So he asked if this was an interview or a debate.

On Europe Le Pen got herself a bit stuck she is now thinking of having 2 currencies for France. Macron tore this idea to bits. Rumor has it her party came up with this idea over the weekend and it showed as she couldn't even answer basic questions about how it would work. Macron wants to reform the EU but never got into how or what he wanted to actually do with this. Annoyingly he was never pressed on this either. Le Pen wants out of the Schengen treaty. Thinks an extra 10000 customs officers should be able to secure the border. Accused Macron of not believing they did a good job, when he said that it may be more difficult then that to secure all the French borders.

      Terrorism.
This was interesting. Macron said something which apparently will have lost him a few points. He said that France needs to take some responsibility for the terror attacks carried out by French nationals. Le Pen was outraged by this. I'm not sure why. He also said he would dismantle any organisation that promoted hate.

Le Pen had waited all debate for this. She hoed in with a lot of prepared rhetoric but never gave very much detail about her plans other then closing the border, and restricting immigration. She mentioned closing mosques, youth groups, sports teams or anything that was being used as a cover for radicalisation. She did mention removing the nationality of people involved in terror attacks. Macron asked her how concerned did she honestly think suicide attackers would be by their loss of French Nationality.

If Le Pens tactic was to get under Macrons skin and try and get him to react angrily. It failed, he never took the bait. It was not a knock out for Macron though, Le Pen gave so little detail that he couldn't really attack her policies too much and he left a lot of stuff very vague himself.

Where this matters is with the far left voters of Melanchon. He is refusing to back either candidate, (Though he has stated he would never vote for Le Pen) He had 19% of the first round. That is who they needed to try and win over last night. I had a wee look on reddit and twitter and it seems Macron may have just seemed more presidential to these people. Though I never no if you can trust when someone on the internet says they were an undecided voter, so take that with a grain of salt.

As I said earlier Le Pen constantly interrupting and trying to be funny and trying to talk over Macron looked like a calculated tactic, for me it didn't work she came off as a petulant child. It also gave him room For Macron to shoosh her then talk down to her. As you may be aware being condescending is almost a national pastime here.

Finally. I have tried to write this as factually as I could but as I said earlier I have a dog in the fight and have a preference. So if you want to reply just to smugly point out all the places my bias is showing you can save yourself the 1s and 0s. But if you have any real questions or are interested in my opinions I will be happy to offer them.

Took my eldest to his first Top 14 game on the weekend. Awesome dad experience. He was so excited the whole game and the Racing people really put on a show with the pre match intros. Racing won by a point and it was a great atmosphere. Already planning the next game to go to.

Went to check him last night before going to bed, and he had snuck into his rugby kit to sleep in.

He is a decent person. I know from personal experience. When I worked at the Linwood Warehouse, he would come in just before Xmas and personally buy 1000's of dollars worth of kids toys, all to give away to kids who parents can't afford them.

Like the dude literally pushes trolley after trolley to the checkouts. When I saw what he was doing I got the boss down to talk to him. He said he didn't want to make a big deal of it and didn't want it in the papers, but the boss would swing him 10% off the lot anyway.

He gave us shit for not having his radio station on. I gave him shit for playing rugby for Sumner. All round decent bloke.

    • RE: All Blacks v BI Lions Test #2

Having had the weekend to absorb the loss I thought I would throw in my 2 cents.

Firstly well done the Lions you got there in the end. Plenty of teams would not have gotten over the line but you found a way to win ugly.

For the ABs I have to say even down to 14 I thought we would still win it. Mostly due to what I thought was tactical brilliance from Hanson. Subbing a forward was clearly something they had planned for as it happened almost immediately. It sucks for Kaino but our 7 man pack was more then competitive against the Lions 8 and that is purely down to conditioning. Every one of those blokes put in a shift and they got so close. I suspect if Cruden had passed that balls to the forwards and asked them to hold it for 5 minutes they would have.

But thats not us we play to win not to draw, was still a shitty option.

I can understand people are frustrated with SBW for what happened but I think people need a little perspective. He is not even close to being a serial offender wasn't his last card in 2011 that was 6 years ago. If you balance it up against the good stuff hes done I think hes still the kind of player you want around. So this talk of him never wearing Black again or people booing him needs to be put to bed. Its over no one will regret it more then him.

Vunipola on the other hand should count himself very lucky, in my view that was a straight up targeted shot. He saw it was Barrett and he went hard in on him. It was cheap as well as Barrett was rolling out of the ruck, and there was no other defender so he had no need to even enter the ruck, the ball was available. I think if the contact was any heavier we could have been down a fly half. I would be surprised if he was selected for the 3rd test, he didn't really bend the line and his discipline sucked.

For the SOB incident, it makes me really wonder if the way the Refs are implementing the head high rules needs some adjustment. One thing in common with a lot of the rulings that have been very inconsistent is that its not normally the tackler that is at fault, but more often the tackler assist. We see it here with Sean, with Sonny and even the Cane incident in Ireland. He was coming in as the assist but Henshaws spin caught him. I think as the assister there is a much greater risk of these sorts of accidents. For one you have a player who is in the process of being tackled that will normally be lowering there head as they move toward the ground. This puts it right in the tackle zone for anyone attempting the assist. Then you have huge amounts of force in the collision and the way that acts on the players is not easy to predict, making any assisted tackles a lot messier. The inverse is also true in a one on one tackle with two players colliding both have a good idea of where their bodies should be, to effect a safe tackle at impact.

I really don't know how to deal with that. I would like to see slow motion replays used less as I think reducing the time gives the impression that the players have a choice in their actions and for a lot of cases in the assist I don't think they have much of one. What they committed to 2 steps away is what they have to go through with.

I was happy with Laumape, thought he was good considering the circumstances. Reiko needed to be busier. He can't afford to run hot cold like that and needs to go looking for the ball a bit more rather then wait for it.

One final thing all of the international French Refs are totally fluent in English, please don't give them this excuse as a crutch for a poor performance. They don't need it if they are not communicating with their team properly its not down to language skills.

Well a big bunch of you seem to hate what the PM said. But I can tell you over here in France , its making news and its been really well received. It was a 1 minute clip for gods sake.

I don't know what the issue with what she said is. She said we pride ourselves on our hospitality. Which we do or we did when I lived there. She said the government will support the police in anything they need to close the case. And she said she should have been safe here and she wasn't.

I share some of her sentiment, Is it the use of the word shame? I feel embarrassed or ashamed it happened in New Zealand. I tell loads of people to go visit, you'll love it. There is a big difference between that and feeling responsible!

Whether its reality or not, people internationally perceive NZ as being a very safe place. If this had happened in Mexico I highly doubt it would have got the same level of attention.

She didn't say its all white dudes fault, she didn't say its the fault of all kiwis. She apologised to a parent that their child won't be coming home. Seems like a really human thing to do and really the least she can do under the circumstances.

Imagine it flipped a young kiwi backpacker dies in Paris. She's pretty and white so the media give a shit about it and ask the French president to comment. How would you feel if he said "Well the police are looking into that, nothing to do with me" That would be pretty cold.

You may not like the PM, I am hardly a super fan myself, but to get your panties in a bunch because she apologised to a grieving family, that the media were bound to ask about, that's what is triggering you? Really.

[edit - split from another topic]

Whatever happens in this game I would like to see this 2 Haka thing put to bed. I have never been okay with it. It smacks of us picking and choosing who is worthy of the special one and who is going to get the contractually obligated one.

Will they do Kapo Pango this week because they are hurt from their loss and have departing players. Or will they do Ka Mate because who honestly cares about a 3rd place play off and Wales are losers as well.

We look like total cocks pulling out our special haka, and then getting spanked.

Choose one or the other. Or one for home and on for away.

But this special haka thing just gets on my nerves.

I just think Kaino had time to avoid that contact though (and he seems to admit as much).

So Kaino should have tried to avoid an offside player pushing him as he is attempting to put pressure on the kicker.

Should he have polished his boots on the way through as well and thanked him kindly for returning to an onside position?

And the call us precious. I will give a fuck what these people think when they point out the high shot on Crotty that wasn't called either. Pains me to say it but Woodward is right here. The Lions didn't lose because Murray got a bit of heat on his box kicks they got beat because after all this time together the still can't score with a 2 man over lap.

    • RE: Dad advice sharing thread.

Had the last tournament of the year yesterday. It was his home one. He was his usual self for the first 2 games. After lunch I took him and a couple of the other kids who avoid contact and did some mauling and tackling drills with them to get them super fired up. The 3rd game was much better got into some of the mauls and seemed much more interested.

Then the final game he made a great tackle with the smallest fellah in the team coming over the top to help him out. Then in the last play of the game he ripped the ball from the opposition on our goal line it fell at his feet. He looked at the ref then picked it up and went the length of the field to score.

Of course he does this at the one game his mum comes to watch, so I get the whole. I don't know what you're talking about he seemed fine to me speech the way home.

He was super happy so I picked him up a club cap which he wanted to sleep in, and is already talking about the boys coming back for next seasons under 7's.

Will spend the summer doing more ball skills and getting the middle boy pumped up for his debut.

He will be a different proposition. Once at school someone was bullying the oldest, who is 2 years above him. He tackled the kid to the ground and just started mashing him with his head. The teacher was not impressed. Dad let him ride in the front seat for a week though. Bully won't even talk to the oldest now out of fear.

Just glad I am not coaching him, when he doesn't want to do something he is the most stubborn angry 4 year old I have ever seen. His best mate is a little girl though and she seems to be able to control him. Might ask her parents if she would be keen to play.

      @Rembrandt
Well its complicated. First lets get this out there. Neither of them are working class. Le Pen is born into a political dynasty. While Macron had doctors for parents.

Le Pen is in my view not really a Trump like figure, she is a lawyer that spent her career working for her Father as head of the FN. I think its safe to say there is not much debate about the fact her father is a anti-semite and a racist. But this is the internet so I am sure someone will be along soon to dispute that. A few years back she ousted him from the party in an attempt to distance the party from the personality. They allegedly don't speak much since all that. I think the media paint her like Trump due to some of the shared policy ideas, but personality and background wise they could not be more different. People will say they support Le Pen but usually caveat it with they want a change from the normal big parties.

Marcon, frames himself as ni droit, ni gauche (Neither left or right) His past kind of reflects this he worked for the Rothschild investment bank. Allegedly did very well then chucked it all in to become an adviser to the socialist government. He worked in the ministry of Finance and hated how inefficient it all was. So started his own movement. It has only been around for 1 year. At the start it was just a website with not much information. Just before the first round they released a manifesto. It has some things to appeal to both sides but is pretty light on detail. He is a bit like Trump in that he has never held any elected office. I'm not really sure if he is a centrist he hates that title apparently, or generally does not care about the political spectrum as he claims and just wants to take the best ideas and try and make them work.

The protests here in Paris were not really about the election, they were may day protests, we have them every year. All the big unions here, and some are massive. Have huge marches in Paris for labour day and normally some rebel rouses use it as cover to start some shit.

Its been an interesting few days here Le Pen is all about this outsider image and she has probably taken it a bit too far. While Macron probably needs to be seen as more of an outsider.

An example was Macron went to Amiens where Whirlpool are due to mothball a factory. They already have the replacement online in Poland so its a done deal. Macron went and met with the owners and the union to try and figure out a way they could reuse the factory or protect some of the jobs. Le Pen showed up as well and had an impromptu rally in the car park with the workers, promising to force them to keep the factory open. Then tried to enter the factory only to be turned away. It all looked very dramatic but the truth is she never told them she was even coming so had no meetings booked. The owners were on the news saying they would have been happy to speak to her if she would just call to plan a time.

Can she win? Umm if the polls are wrong they have to be wrong by 20% I am not a polling expert but the ones on TV say her best chance would be absenteeism. and a lot of it.

The Marler case is super interesting in how it has divided people.

Its an odd one in that as some have said on here already you do that at amateur level its a full on brawl and nobody would have an issue with it. I have seen fights start over someone accidentally catching a low blow. But never when I was playing did I see anyone give someone a tickle up.

But the Pros can't do that like AWJ said he has to just take it? Thats crazy. I know people go on about wanting players to have personalities and not be robots. But I think some people like Marler are just trying way to hard on this front. This whole its a joke thing just falls flat when you are the only one who thinks its funny.

As for Piers Morgan hes just being the contrarian arsehole he is. He would change his tune so quickly if this happened to one of his kids.

Day 4 of lock down here in France. As the Parisians haven't been taking it seriously they are now fining people caught out without a good reason. There is a form you need to fill out and have with you.

The UK strategy seems very odd to us here in France as presently half the ICU beds in France are occupied with cases of people under the age of 60. Now that may be because they are using them longer as they are responding to treatment. But the fact remains if they run out and you get a bad case being young won't save you if there is no ICU bed to treat you in.

People have also started silly shopping here now as well.

We have chossen to isolate in our place in the countryside. More space for the kids and easier to keep away from others. So far the only downside is the internet sucks here so working is not the easiest.

      Great article, haha

I say it every time we play. But "Come on Boys I need this win" My misses and all my outlaws are Irish! I can dine off this for the next year. But if we lose, I cop it nonstop.

Something I noticed in both the NZ and the French games this weekend. Why is it that sometimes a try wipes out foul play. But other times it doesn't

Naholos finish was awesome but that attempt at a tackle was a shoulder charge plain and simple and deserved at least a penalty restart at half way.

Same thing France Japan, Basteraud hits a guy and ends up flipping him Japan score and they don't bother to go back to take a second look at that.

      Crazy.

I loved it thought it was fun start to finish and on the edge of my seat for most of it.

The only down side was Leia saving herself. Twice. First with her little space flight and then by letting purple hair crash the ship. Should have been Leia doing that.

As for Snoke. I loved the scene in his throne room, and couldn't really care about his back story. I never knew the back story of the emperor when I was a kid but I was stoked when that evil bastard bought it.

With all this bullshit happening with the Irish, and every time we go to the UK, I wouldn't mind if in 2018 we didn't tour the UK and/or Ireland. Tour France instead, play 3 tests 1 warm up game against a club, even a game against Italy. 2 test in the rugby heart land (South and South West of France) and the 3rd in Paris. The monies going to be the same as 3 tests across the UK.

+1. Would love a classic tour of France, rather than touring the Home Nations and getting the same old crap from their media. A 3-test series against France with a lucrative test en route in America or Asia would be just dandy.

Great idea. Whinging home nations press don't appreciate us. having had the pleasure of touring the south of France like a few other posters here, it really is one of the best rugby regions in the world. We were playing in a pre 2007 RWC tournament in small towns/villages around Montpellier and were treated like kings wherever we went.

      TSF golden oldies tour anyone?

Cracking film loads of fun. Action out the eyeballs.

Star wars fans will probably hate it. But the smiles on my kids faces afterwards and the light sabre fights at bed time with torches. Tell a different story.

    • RE: RWC: England v New Zealand (SF1)

Super disappointed in our performance. But not super surprised. England have been building nicely for 2 years now and would have been targeting this match. We fell into the old trap of trying to play their game. Hell we even picked a team to combat theirs. A confident team picks their team to play their way.

The start was absolutely turgid. You won't see a softer try then that. Even school boys would be ashamed of that defence. When that didn't trigger any sort of response Perth 2.0 was on the cards. Our defense was the most passive I have seen.

With Owens as the ref is crazy how few rucks we contested. And for all this red head blue head stuff. When the pressure came on our discipline turned to shit.

My only complaint with Owens is that shoulder hit has been a card all cup. Not even a penalty is just a bad call. Not that we wouldn't have lost anyway.

I know the All Blacks like leaders all over the park. But this two play makers thing annoys me. You need someone running the cutter. Some one to say right I'm changing things. I don't see how this works with 2 10s on the park.

Anyway it's only a game we had a great run. I can't say I have any strong feelings towards any of the teams still in. So good luck to them all.

    • RE: The Failed policy of Multiculturalism

@Frank said in The Failed policy of Multiculturalism:

Nick (or other liberals on this board)- aside from the obvious of not meddling in Syria in the first place (thanks Obama and Hillary and Kerry) what would you have done / do about the refugee problem?

-Would you have blocked them in the first place and forced them to go to only Arab countries?
-Set up enclosed refugee camps in countries nearby like Turkey?
-Or let them in wholesale like Merkel has?
-Would you start to deport them now in the wake of these terror attacks?

I have asked a bunch of liberals these questions and have yet to hear any concrete plan - except saying tolerance every third word and a sense we owe these people somehow.

Personally, I would never have let them come in because I totally disagree with importing people with massively different belief systems, especially when an unknown proportion are actively despise the West and/or are at least sympathetic to Jihadist causes. On top of that, there are a large proportion that while not ISIS affiliated, are extremely anti-human rights.

Frank, seems odd that you would leave Putin and China off the list of people who meddled in Syria.

I see it as a dammed if you do dammed if you don't situation. You talk about human rights but if you don't give those same rights to the refugees are you any better then the people who would deny yours?

I am not sure how you force Arab countries to take them, without more meddling. Or how you block them, we are talking about a continent here. The border sizes are ridiculous If a wall won't keep Mexicans out of the US how would you block the entire Mediterranean coastline? Not to mention the land borders.

How do you get turkey to let them in over their borders without more meddling? If Turkey don't want anything to do with this, western influence to get them to become the holding ground is hardly going to go down well now is it.

Merkel had 2 choices in my view set up a program to let them in process them begin applications for residency start background checks, feed, cloth and house those in need. Try and root out the nasty buggers and send them back. Or she could let the majority starve at the border while those who could would have found a way in anyway and set themselves up outside the system illegally. She couldn't close every border in Europe any more then she could persuade them all that there was a better life waiting for them in Saudi, which lets be honest there wasn't. Those people were not going to go away after all they had endured to get there.

Would I deport all the syrian refugees in the wake of the attacks? If you are talking about the train attack, the xmas market attack, and Koln Train station assaults? As far as I am aware the train attack was an Afghan the Train station assaults were from mostly illegal immigrants not refugees and mostly not Syrian and the Xmas market is still unknown.

Would I deport a million people on the basis of these incidents. No I would not and I think that leads down a very dark path that the Germans are only too familiar with. Would I deport the perpetrators Hell yes!

In the midst of a massive humanitarian crisis. With 100's of people washing up dead daily on your beaches after trying to enter illegally, I would rather get them safe and legal and sort them out after approach. Is it perfect, Nope its not some will slip through. But I am yet to hear anyone regardless of political leaning come up with a better solution.

Frank where do you live? I find your comment about disagreeing about importing people with massively different belief systems a bit odd. That pretty much describes all of human history.

Anyway thats my take on it I don't have answers but I don't want a million people to starve or drown to death on my door step.

    • RE: All Blacks v France Test #2

What utter bullshit. If I was anyone of the other players who had gotten a red card for such an incident in the past I would be seething. I am thinking of the Payne incident off the top of my head. But I am sure there are others. The Ref was right under current rules straight red.

On another note, I see all the talking heads are saying red cards ruin games and we need to solve this problem for accidental contacts. One week after they were baying for a red card for Ofa. Pack of fucking hypocrites. Where was the call for this orange card when Sonny bill didn't get low enough in the lions test? That ruined the test, that was a dynamic impact affected by a 3rd party!

The biggest joke of all is that during the SA Eng Match one of the English wingers copped a shoulder to the head as he was going down in a tackle. But as there was no injury, thats fine! Never mentioned again. I hate to sound like an old man but this shit is ruining rugby.

Intentional dirty play should get a red.
      Reckless a yellow.

If you miss it the citing official should pick it up. We don't need 35 different coloured cards to officiate rugby we need common sense.

My personal take on the incident is that I hate that it's a red card offense to try and compete for the ball. But that is the precedent and that was red all day long under the current interpretations.
