McWhannell really good this season. Renata has been the biggest surprise. Massive improvement at the scrum.
Mind you the massive improvement in Patty T’s scrummaging has been literally behind that.

Post match interviews (and Ofa) all referred to carry cleans. Blues are bruising there. C.f. one of the reasons Ireland are so successful.

Ponies mail isn’t as good this year. Reds probably best in Oz.
Shopping in Canberra isn't as good as Brisbane. Noted.
Farking predictive text. Changed it from mail and it changed it back!👹

Caught up on a couple of films on my (long) film bucket list this week.
Sunset Blvd from 1950. Blew me away. Simply brilliant film which has to be one of the best about Hollywood ever made. Acting, writing, design, photography and music all outstanding from one of the great directors, Billy Wilder. Don't be put off by the fact it's over 70 years old - its as fresh as ever.
In the Realm of the Senses (1976). Been recommended to me by lots of people but I thoroughly disliked it. Well made and directed (Nagisha Oshima) but just provocative for the sake of it. Over-blown and underwhelming
Will check that out with Mrs. Pakman.
I recently watched Twelve Angry Men for the second time ever, and her first, and still found it excellent.

As I said before the game, McMillan got some of his selections wrong for this game. Some players are better suited to being subs.
Had ENS gone to 15 when Stevenson off and Rona wing defence would sure have looked a lot more solid.
On that, ENS had a storming start to the season, but his form has definitely dipped in the past couple of games. If can get back to start of the season form I'd definitely be looking at him for ABs.
Very talented, but defence seems less of an issue at 15.

Chiefs subs apart from Dyer seemed backwards steps.
Rewatch of second half. Forward replacements in fact OK for Chiefs.
But backs' defensive pattern turned to custard when Rona went off, Tuapea to 12 and Poihipi to 13. Several bad misses.
And ENS all over the place leaving holes for several breaks. Exacerbated by really poor kick straight to touch which ended up costing 7.
Had it been 29-23 with five to go would have been very interesting, given Canes's serial offences in red zone.

Hurricanes named for the curtain raiser, Sullivan makes his return.
Curtain raiser would be an interesting watch.

@Bones interesting, what school did he go to?
De La Salle in South Auckland, SJK's alma mater.

One of those guys with all the gifts - imo. He's so strong in contact but doesn't use his power in a direct enough way. Always takes little jinks before contact and doesn't like laying people out on defence like Finau does. Like a sevens player or back trapped in a bigger body. I vaguely remember one of the Canterbury posters saying Razor didn't want him the Canterbury squad.
Those small steps are the key to why he often makes good post contact yards in tight space.
But sometimes what is needed is the direct hard carry, and he seems less inclined to take that on.
This is what I'm talking about:

There will be a few 50/50 calls in the Chiefs team, although it will largely be predictable. I am thinking something like this:
1 Aidan Ross
2 Samisoni Taukei’aho
3 George Dyer/Reuben O’Neill
4 Manaaki Selby-Rickit
5 Tupou Vaa’i
6 Samipeni Finau
7 Kaylum Boshier
8 Luke Jacobson
9 Xavier Roe/Cortez Ratima
10 Damian McKenzie
11 Etene Nanai-Seturo
12 Quinn Tupaea/Rameka Poihipi
13 Anton Lienert-Brown
14 Emoni Narawa
15 Shaun StevensonReserves
16 Bradley Slater
17 Ollie Norris
18 Reuben O’Neill/George Dyer
19 Naitoa Ah Kuoi
20 Simon Parker/Wallace Sititi
21 Cortez Ratima/Xavier Roe
22 Josh Ioane
23 Daniel Rona/Rameka PoihipiLord and Thompson being injured.
That should be there or thereabouts.
For me Poihipi is better starter, as shifts ball wide better. Which would make bench midfielder between Tupaea and Rona.
I'd start Ratima, but wouldn't mind seeing TTT on bench.
Front row trickiest. The Taranaki front row works very well as a unit and delivers real mobility and fast cleanouts. Not knowledgeable about Proffit's scrummaging, though, which is relevant given Canes THs. In which case add Ross for starting trio. Then Dyer, Sami and Norris/Ross to provide impact. -
Many Chiefs stood out, but the standard of the opposition makes things hard to gauge.
Of starters, Sami, Vaa'i, Finau, DMac, Narawa and ENS must be likely for AB squad.
Pohipi works tremendously well with DMac, so would be worth a shot.
Off bench, ALB will be in and Ratima must be a good chance.
Wouldn't be surprised to see Sititi, TTT, and O'Neill in black at some stage...

Fakatava has done nothing this year to justify his name being in the selection frame. For every good thing he does, he makes two or three bad decisions or passes. I'm not saying he won't get there with time, we all saw how good he was a few years back, but he's currently a shadow of that player and what he really needs now is consistent minutes on the park, not spending all his time on the training field.
I think we'll likely see Christie, Perenara and Ratima selected for the July Tests, with Roigard potentially returning to the mix for the EOYT. Fakatava should spend a full season playing for the Highlanders and Shield Snorters.
Throughout the squad there shouldn't be too many changes...
Gone are Dane Coles, Nepo Laulala, Sam Whitelock, Brodie Retallick, Shannon Frizell, Aaron Smith, Cam Roigard, Richie Mo'unga, Leicester Fainga'anuku and Will Jordan (injury).
Given the above turnover, it's unlikely that someone experienced like Ofa Tu'ungafasi (and still young, in propping terms) will miss out. Ardie Savea, Sam Cane and Beauden Barrett will all likely still be selected too.
Coles - Aumua
Laulala - Ma'u, Numia, Dyer
Whitelock/Retallick - Lord and Tuipulotu, Strange, Walker-Leawere, McWhannell
Frizell - Ioane or Sotutu, Grace
Smith/Roigard - Perenara and Ratima
Mo'unga - Love or Perofeta
Fainga'anuku - Narawa, Proctor
Jordan - StevensonBower to replace Laulala rated highly by Ryan, even though he is a LH
he can cover TH so can Willliams. Please not Tamaiti at TH.

Jacobson is to be rested, and I am assuming that Lord is out. Finau will be back though. The big question is whether DMac is fit to play. I wouldn't be surprised if Ioane starts.
McMillan has tried to rotate players with the bye in Rd 9. If he was ever going to give either of the young props a SR debut, or Malimali some game time, this is the match.
Mafileo is very handy with savage behind him. Not one to start a tyro LH.

The Chiefs' halfbacks haven't really taken their chances so far, but that may change by the end of the season.
I really like Ratima's game for test rugby - but yeah he seemed a bit flat against the saders. Reckon Roe is the most Smith like, be interesting to see how he develops.
Didn’t Roe start?
