Eat and drink- Hour Glass, Liardet St https://www.facebook.com/pg/TheHourGlass49/about/?ref=page_internal
Just about every bar in NP is controlled by one of the big breweries and are like going to a chain. This is a great little tapas bar with an awesome range of beer/wine. The food is excellent as well.
Suggest you book thoughAccommodation is pretty dire if looking for something special but plenty of bog standard hotel type places

And of course, always stop off in Mokau for some whitebait on the way in (AND out), if you're coming in from the North.
That is the only certainty about the trip. I have only been to NP on boys golf trips and that place is mandatory. That's also why I know nothing about nice places to stay and go

Yeah - my last visit to NZ, it was all a bit last-minute - and I didn't get around to visiting god-daughter, many close friends, etc... but I did visit Mokau. Twice.

decanta tapas bar https://www.facebook.com/Decantatapasbar/
even if you're not into art you should spend 20 mins at len lye
Accomodation is limited We stayed at Quest last Decwhich is old post office building so has a bit of character. Rooms are well appointed reasonably sized and comfortable. Fair value for price. Right in heart of city. Its an apartment hotel so no food or drink but everywhere is within 5 mins
