Getting faster
-
I'm just about to start my third season of American Football, and I'm looking to move from a right tackle position on the line to playing tight end. This means moving from a blocking/tackling position into a receiving position. Hence, it'd be beneficial for me to pick up some extra pace.

At the end of last season I was about 111kg but I've been dieting a bit, so I'm down to about 104kg. I'll hopefully be at about 100kg by the time the season starts.

Do any ferners have any tips on getting extra speed in terms of short burst sprinting? I've been doing a heap of leg weights over the winter, but nothing too specific in terms of actual sprinting. I'm 6 foot 6, so not a natural build for being a good sprinter (Usain Bolt aside). Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated -
Welcome back AW, we haven't heard from you in awhile !
Someone gave me some tips on getting faster many moons ago, pump your arms really straight, not from side to side.....( this makes sense in my mind apologies if it doesn't written down ). I can't quote any times but pretty sure it made me a bit faster. -

Just a quite bit of youtubing - this stuff I 'discovered' in my early 20's and it helped with my foot speed, power and balance no end. I assume you're only going short distances and in traffic so you're going to want to concentrate on 'small' feet and pumping efficiently. Pay attention to where your feet are and how you're using them! These videos aren't the best but they give some good examples.
Hill sprints, box jumps, squats. Gotta make sure you are well warmed up for any sprint training to. A trawl of youtube will give you a heap of good tips - you'll want straight line and jinking speed.
