Aretha died on the same day (Aug 16) as Elvis Presley.

Elvis isn't dead. He is "missing".

Was talking to a couple of young guys at work about this, pretty horrified to hear how many of their mates have taken their own lives.

I know it's not your term but I hate the term "the black dog' when talking about depression. No-one I know that has suffered from this talks about the black dog. All I hear about is a fear, a fear that can't easily be described.

@hooroo Yup. Black dog is a stupid term. More like a heavy black cloud that cuts out light and hope and fucks your head up.

And just like after every celebrity suicide, you have these stupid twits chirping on social media to 'ask for help'. For a high functioning professional that is nigh on impossible, because they are in a position where the chance of mockery and misunderstanding is high - you're rich and attractive and on tv, what have you got to be sad about? So they carry on until they crack.
It's why I have so much respect for SJK speaking out like he has. Depression doesn't give a fuck what you do or how old you are or what you look like or your bank balance.

Not to negate your point but to discuss further.
I'm pretty sure ome others do find the term quite a good description of how they feel.
I don't know the origins of the term as linked to depression but I do remember people like Tim Finn trying to explain his feelings by describing them as a black dog following him around ready to pounce.
I do know that Black Dog is an old folklore entity for evil or a portent of death, an apparition that creates fear.
I know the term doesn't describe the way all sufferers feel but I do think it is a good visual term to try and describe to non sufferers and raise awareness. I guess it's a good entity for a campaign to work off.

A post on Social Media by SJK

Reading the Sad news today about losing such a talented and popular man as Greg Boyed. My heart goes out to his friends and family. Depression is an illness. it’s not prejudice and it can strike anyone from any walk of life. It's the single hardest thing I’ve ever faced. Depression can take life like any illness and leaves behind sadness, guilt, blame, fear and anger. For those left behind don’t blame yourself, don’t feel guilty that you could have done more. When you are in that hell sometimes it’s very hard to see out , that is the illness. Don’t be angry as this emotion will hurt your impression of the lovely person who has left us.

If your unwell get help today as there is a way through and we can beat this. I made it through with professional help love and understanding.

If you do suffer from this illness please go to depression.org.nz and start your journey to wellness.

I'd always associated the black dog with Winston Churchill's description of his own battles with depression. I guess different terms resonate better for each of us.

Supposedly it goes back as far as Samuel Johnson of writing, dictionary, (and importantly Blackadder), fame - posthumously diagnosed with Tourette syndrome alongside depression. And then goes back much further again, but intertwined with other meanings and symbolism.

A hell of a thing regardless.

I thought it was old Winnie as well. Still wouldn't surprise me if it was Johnson - he was one seriously fucked up dude. Collected orange peel and counted every step he made from waking up until he got out onto the street and if it was an odd/even number (can't remember which) he turned around and went back to bed for the day.

Whatever we call it, depression ruins way too many lives
