Tell me about it. Have I ever mentioned how expensive the Clarin's for Men range is? Oh yeah, that's that "other" thread.

At risk of being labelled a 'soy boy' by those on the political correctness threads...
I really enjoyed the new Mary Poppins movie. The original was one I grew up with, and this new one hit the beats perfectly. Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel-Miranda were both excellent, too.
Not sure how it would go down if you weren't familiar with the original though.
All I know is nieces 5 & 8 liked it.

I went to this today, forgetting that it is full blown musical - we used to watch the original every second Friday at primary school (Star Wars on the other Friday - not too many videos available in the hood) and I remember liking it as a kid.
I quite like musicals in the theatre but struggle with them on film. This seemed to have so many songs that I was drifting out for long stretches.
Thought Blunt was fine, Manuel-Miranda was a bit unintentionally creepy at times but then so was Van Dyke in the original, speaking of him his cameo was good. Surprised there was no cameo from Julie Andrews though.
Hmmm, does the fact I didn't like it mean I'm not a soy boy?

No . You still saw it.

Passengers
JLaw is hot. So fucking hot. In fact, I went looking for fappening photos right in the middle of this, and was reminded that on my scale of 1 to 10, she's at least a 13.
Chris Pratt is hot, too. But more importantly, he's funny.
Both of them have charisma, and the ability to play the hot person as well as the goofy self-effacing shit. And that's what made this movie, as it was mostly just the two of them and Michael Sheen's straight man android.
Because, quite frankly, some of the scientific shit that goes off in my brain during these films annoys the fuck out of me.
I liked it.
3.5 hull breaches out of 5 spacewalks.
:::
Like seriously, if they'd spent 80 years fucking around in the ship stores, and planting trees and all that shit, they would have seriously depleted the supplies left for the OTHER FUCKING FIVE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY THREE PEOPLE. Tho its entirely possible most of them had organ failure like Morpheus did. Who knows? The writers didn't give a fuck.
The ship somehow went directly into a debris field. No emergency changes of course - appreciating the speed they're going at - but that field should have been detected way out in time for a small course correction.
Also, the dialogue specifically said the crew would wake up 4 months before the passengers, who would wake up 4 months before arrival. Yet, the wide shots showed them right on top of the planet. FFS...
A lack of android maintenance crew was the only other oversight. If this company was making quadrillions, then ensuring their shit works is a key element.
Side panel: How did she not get pregnant? I assume advanced birth control at this point. Otherwise you're talking 3-4 generations and the temptation to open up other pods along the way.

MI: Fallout
I've noticed the trend with some of the 'splosion films lately is the Chinese financing. And, quite frankly, I think it affects the quality of the product. There are introduced Chinese actors (Mile 22) in largely whitewashed casts, some less-than-compelling dialogue, and a few action scenes that are the wrong sort of ridiculous.
Anyway, this turned out to be pretty formulaic, but entertaining, modern spy-tech action blockbusters, for all that. Cruise is his usual self, Baldwin is a good support, and Superman was quite decent as the supporting threat - tho that moustache was stupid. Hot English chicks are also good.
3 plutonium balls out of 5 poor decisions in protecting them.

Who are the Chinese actors in Mile 22?
My bad - I was thinking of something else I started watching recently (another Cruise film?). The guys in Indonesian and I think Philippino.
But it IS interesting to see a large pivot to Asian locations for these films, and looking at the list of financiers, it isn't surprising.

Searching
Interesting premise.
16yo daughter goes missing and Dad searches for her through her technology.
Story is seen entirely through the lens of a device, be it Facegram, instabook, twittime, etc. A little forced in places where they had to bring in tv network choppers to film the outside stuff. But i quite liked it generally.
Quite cute that the Windows interface when the on screen daughter was born was the same as when Ms boo jr (now 15) was born - I remember coz that's when we got our first home pc.
Interesting watch with Ms boo jr as it showed how easy it is for naive teens to get sucked into the vortex of deception.
Also highlighted the worst behaviours on line like the trolling of the parents, competing to be most upset on Facebook, Alex Jones type conspiracies.
Ending was a touch forced, but a couple of plot twists - that threw me off track (after nailing it fleetingly in the middle) - kept me guessing.
4 traceable social media platforms out of 5 socially disconnected teenagers.

Ravenous
French Canadian atmospheric zombie stuff. Makes you watch - unless you speak French of course and don't need subtitles - but a LOT of atmospheric i.e. dead air.
Also a lot of the standard things for a zombie film in terms of bad decisions e.g. splitting up, failing to use the resources you have correctly, not having enough bladed weapons to start with.
In any case, it was a bit of a different slant on things, and Quebec looks nice.
2.5 stacked chairs out of 5 amazingly stealthy zombies.

The Asian market is huge, makes sense to get some of their film folk involved.
Close - Noomi Rapace
A Netflix film.
Noomi takes on a bit of a female Jason Bourne type role when asked to babysit a rich girl.
3 special ops body guards out of 5 spoilt brats

Zombie films have taken a downward spiral this decade. I blame the Walking Dead and that fucken horrific one that Arnie made.

@MN5 still been some good ones, but more of the lower budget stuff.
I thought HIdden was pretty good, seen a number of other good ones too, but agree there have also been some shite ones!!
I guess but nothing up there with the early Resident Evils, Day/Dawn of the Dead or 28 days/weeks etc.
-
@MN5 might have to watch 28 Days Later again, been a while...other issue is, like Vampires films and those genres, is they are fucking with tradition...vampires walking in daylight, running zombies and shit...trying to reinvent the genres!
