I see EU Parliament has just voted in Article 13. Britain really needs to get the hell out of there, deal or no deal.
Thats got nothing on this one ...
A few scenarios; you are rushing to hospital with your pregnant wife, can’t go above the speed limit and both die in your back seat.
You are being chased by criminals who obviously have disabled their limiter. No way to escape, get to watch your partner being raped.
Natural disaster occurs behind, can’t speed up to get away (like the Tsunami in Japan). You drown but at least you didn’t die in a car crash.
These are all of course, edge cases. But the point is the same. People have to be allowed to make their own decisions. When you try to take these decisions away from people, the same people who are "causing the issue", ignore them anyway. All you do is take away the freedom from those who weren't bothered anyway.
Which means, all you effectively do, is disallow people to escape the edge cases as you have put forward above.
Stop your moaning and get in your Caterham.

@MajorRage @Kirwan I'm happy to disagree with views on this. I think it's a good idea. It's always seemed odd to me that speed limiters on cars were north of 100mph when the legal limit was 70mph. I'd support fully limiting cars to no more than 20% over the speed limit at any time.
I'm much more likely to get killed by some kid driving like an idiot than I am having to outrun a tsunami. And the proposal is that it works as a warning system but can be overridden (at least until they change that part of it).
I disagree that people have a right to make their own decision when that decision is a deliberate choice to break a law that is in place for my safety.
In any event, once cars are autonomous there won't be any speeding anyway.

@Calf it’s a well intentioned law, but with likely unintended consequences. If I felt like it, I could spend the next ten mins coming up with more realistic valid reasons for speeding.
On principle, I find these sorts of nanny state laws tyranny by stealth.

The point is that those who are going to break the rule, will break it anyway. A kid who wants to drive like a nutjob is going to, regardless of a speed limiter on a car.
-
@MajorRage isn’t the point though that they won’t be able to drive like a nut job (or at least, not a speeding nut job).
To spin it round, when I buy my son his first car I absolutely support him not being able to speed in it. I can still remember what a shit driver I was at 15 and how fast I drove.

Accident statistics are like any statistic, you can pull whatever inference you want by focusing on certain areas. I like the idea of governments doing things which make a lot of sense to reach a goal, as opposed to just doing things like blanket bans. For example, you often hear things like "speed is a factor in x% of crashes". Ok, well how much of a factor? Was the driver drunk? Was the car modern? Did it have advanced safety features? Was it rural road or motorway? How old was the driver? There are huge amount of driver reforms which I fully agree on.
If the EU said all cars in 2022 have to be able to get drivers to pass a breathalyser test, you'd see me 100% supportive. If you make MOT checks on older cars / kit cars / much harsher - I fully support. If you erect speed cameras in front of schools and ensure they are always turned on, with double fines, I fully support.
I would rather share the roads with sober drivers who speed in modern cars than with drunk drivers, piece of shit cars, young drivers with highly powered cars, morons who speed in front of schools to name but a few. But the blanket "we control you" reform is going against drivers who regularly speed. I don't agree.
To spin it round, when I buy my son his first car I absolutely support him not being able to speed in it. I can still remember what a shit driver I was at 15 and how fast I drove.
No disagreement from me. But why should all cars driven by all people be adjusted for this? That's my point. On a seperate note, the UK does do a good job of this with the way insurance works. My buddy had Toyota Supra when he was 17, legally insured and all. Thats just wrong.
-
@MajorRage My insurance company keeps asking me to put a black box on my car but I’d rather pay the higher premium thanks. You can guarantee they would use any indiscretion to deny cover.
To another point you’ve raised, the EU is also mandating alcohol immobilisers that would be activated on cars for anyone serving a DUI conviction.

I don't like the black box part at all. Too much big brother.
Pretty much standard on VW & BMW these days. Diagnostics track your speed, location occassionally, MPG, etc.

Has it really come to this? Support a deal that is the worst possible option or democracy in the UK is undone?
That's pretty much the situation. Probably the majority of MPs don't want to Leave the EU and many simply want to ignore the referendum result.

Same with Renault and Nissan. Any new car basically has it's whole life usage recorded

The real joke it is so grammatically incorrect it doesn't say what it is meant to say...

@Victor-Meldrew I might agree with you if I knew any Cornish at all!

It actually reads- "Full of eels my hovercraft is doing."
Resurrected language with about 3k speakers. Been learning it for 3 months. Thought a 2nd language might be useful for Brexit...
-
MP's took control today on Brexit and voted on 8 option to see what parliament really wanted. Here's the result...

@Victor-Meldrew I guess you gotta laugh
