It was on my late wife's CC. She was the tech person and I had no idea that only a password was required to buy anything.
My wife is in the same boat - if I wasn't around, she'd have little to no idea how the house works.
I've clued in a good mate of mine about the tehcnology landscape of our place. He's smart enough to take it from there.

Yeah I've had to get clued up pretty quick. I was anti-Apple and Android and was more than happy with my Windows phone (Windows 8 is a terrific OS on phone and tablet). The wife handled everything with synchronising devices, monitoring, purchases etc. Unfortunately she passed quite suddenly and the boys abused the situation in terms of what they were doing online. I'm not a Luddite by any means but you first actually have to give a shit to learn about this stuff.

All my stuff is open and the kids could buy any kind of shit.
But they never have, they know that the consequence would be that their own bank account would get cleaned out in recompense.
My boy was gutted that he didnt have a single 'skin' in Fortnite.. like completely gutted. Apparently if you dont have a skin you were a noob and nobody healed you?
Anyway that was just a bonus as he learnt over a few months that online MMO are generally populated by selfish, self obsessed farkwits. He got bloody good at the game despite not playing it as much as his peers and then arbitrarily decided on his own that it was a waste of time and deleted it... all his mates still play it but he is over it.
I loaded my credit card on the game on day 1, and told him it was loaded but to never spend.. or else. He never did, despite really wanting to.
I often argue with the wife over this, I am tech savvy enough that I could lock down EVERYTHING. But I think it is counter productive, I spend alot of time trying to teach them to self moderate, worked really well on the boy, he generally only has about 20-40min of screen time before he comes out to socialise for a bit, which is a great step for a 10 year old. he is also pretty good at decided he has had enough and wants to do something else. Took a lot of work and the wife was a slow convert.
The daughtet is struggling a little more but is getting pretty good, she now knows that if someone comes in the room and speaks you look away form the device and engage with them incl eye contact.. or the device disappears for the day.
I am worried about Social media and will take a different more hardline tack on that one. That shite is nasty for kids.
My theory is that eventually they are going to have to make decisions on screen time for themselves, and when they are able to.. they still wont be ready unless they are prepared. I always compare it to the kids who never drank alcohol till Uni.... then went completely fucking crazy on it.
the best thing a parent can teach a kid is not abstinence or enforced limits, but moderation and consequences. -
Kids and devices is a double edged sword, I’ve 2 young girls 6 and 8. We bought an iPad last year for the, they use tablets at school too.
We are concerned at times they try to spend too much time on it but the good side is it makes an excellent way to punish them (or threaten too)
Act up no iPad.
We keep a close eye on the apps they use, kids YouTube is pretty much all they go on. That and learning activities like Mathletics which they do every day. -

No iPad time during the week, privileges can be gained or lost via behaviour through the week. There is no doubt that we often get worst examples of the kids when they have been on devices

Was house sitting the ex wifes and the friendliest cat on earth walked across my chromebook and approved something to be sent to the wrong address.
Took me a few phone calls to sort and the Auckland head office team quite rightly took the piss quite mercilessly.

Cats dont do anything by accident.
All I thought was "No it didn't"

We were sitting at dinner discussing the screen time thing, as one of the kids informed us her friends don't have a TV in their house, and no devices except the parents' phones which are used for communication and not much else.
Mrs TA pipes up with "And that is probably a good thing, as you kids spend too much time in front of a screen"
I paused, and mentioned an article pointing to research that showed the best way to get kids off their screens was for the parents to spend less time on them as well. Icy silence from the woman who falls asleep to rubbish TV on her iPad at night.

@taniwharugby Yeah, dogs might at least pretend contrition for an act of assholery, but cats are all eyebrow lift what ya gonna do about it, punk? Then offer a close up of their actual ass for good measure.

Yes - while the account is locked down, we long ago stopped the process of trying to stop the kids spending their money.
If the boy wants something off the PS4 store, he hands me the cash and I enter the password. If he doesn't have the cash, no purchase.

My boys both got Chromebooks for Xmas from myself and ex wife and her hubby....personally I thought it was a slightly over the top present but I didn't want to be the "stink" dad so I went along with it.
Yet despite all this my oldest still insists on grabbing mine and seeing how far back it will bend ?
Fucken moron, if he breaks that then I can't work and afford to pay his Mum child support then he'll have to sell his PS4, PS2 and everything else just to make ends meet.
